I see Blair in New Statesman basically advanced that Labour should become a party dictatorship with as little input from the masses as possible and should abandon it’s actual commitment to workers and instead merely advance progressivism. Man really thinks that most Brits want to be lib Dems.

this has been the core thrust of every centrist takeover of a left party since clinton and blair became the world's public faces of it. clinton did it first and he was very explicit that he was remaking the democrats so they wouldn't be beholden to "special interests," which was understood to mean minorities and labor.

blairism's trick was:

1) firmly distance yourself from the stink of old labour failure. embrace the new common sense and convention

2) centralise decision-making authority to a handful of reliable people and run everything through this clique, radiating outwards through a morass of people vying for your favour to be let closer to power. this gets you the party; hold-outs are effectively frozen out completely.

3) maintain broad popularity by careful and very adroit polling. find the hot button issues and effective slogans and shape yourself around those things

4) always try to shift your core constituency - the old organised working class is dead as an entity which can win elections by itself, so an appeal must be made to new sections of society

in post-thatcher britain, this meant a firm swing away from socialism, alliance with murdoch at all costs (historically an incredibly successful strategy in britain), a massive realignment to attack the tories' hold on low/middle-income homeowners without offending the rest of the people involved, then entrenching deeply into the halls of government. it also meant abandoning any serious reformist ambition other than that which polling expected from labour to repent for past sins, i.e. strict fiscal rules and vociferously embracing public order as a value. it also meant giving an australian archlich veto over government policy.

this cocktail worked very well until 2003 and the general bleeding started in earnest. by the time brown lost, the labour brand was as toxic as ever, and point 2) meant that a lot of the people in the rest of the party were complete nitwits selected for political loyalty who had any sort of actual political skill basically purposefully bred out of them. blairite revivalism is the dumbest poo poo unless you can somehow bring murdoch back on board, which i sincerely doubt is possible
Murdoch has lost his edge. He never supported Brexit outside of increasing sales of The Sun. Blair thinks he can make lightning strikes twice, not realizing it doesn’t generally happen in snow storms.

also, i can't imagine any reason that labour might suddenly be motivated to be slightly more reconciliatory to the vile antisemitic tyrant jeremy corbyn? how strange.

on a completely unrelated note, here are all the emails labour have sent one of my email accounts (not even my main) this year alone, including one hilariously spam titled "Urgent: Renovations Required", all of which are begging me to renew the membership i explicitly cancelled the day they kicked corbyn out. it is not including the....four or five separate letters or other mail pamphlets they sent, the two unsolicited phone calls nor the motherfucker they literally sent to knock on my door.

the bottom there is a personal plea from my former labour MP, who had been in the role before I was born all the way until 2010, writing me a letter at 6:04 in the evening from his personal ipad/email account.

it's probably because of that amazing membership surge they were recently crowing about that they must have the additional manpower to do this kind of retention work. i'm sure starmer's labour party has a bright future ahead.

edit: lmao i missed one "URGENT: Your membership needs renewing NOW" sure pal

Same boat as you, even after I went on and asked to be removed from the subscription list. Doesn't this break the law for data retention? When you leave they should get rid of all info they have on you? Would be funny if a class action suit against Labour begging for money finally destroy them?

this would be a lot more credible if he was anything like that now and not your sad divorced and alcoholic dad

like he goes out of his way to disavow everything he once stood for (e.g. republicanism) so why should we care what this hypocrite was like at that point in his life

like asking me to consider the spiked people as wayward but genuine leftists, and not virulent racists because hey they used to call themselves "living marxism"

he can't even admit that he did drugs, he can't attempt to own his "cool" past

not that admitting that he did drugs would make him cool, it would just make him even more of a hypocrite given his DPP past and anti decrim present
