For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days they pass through like a shadow? Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?
drove the green for the first time today on a legitimate par 4. 304 yards on a 330 yard hole, into a gentle wind, arced to the left over some trees, faded back, rolled onto the front of the green about 20 feet from the pin. i felt like a god. then 4 putted. golf

I loving love Shanshan. She has a real DGAF attitude and is a fun follow. I don’t blame her one bit for conceding. They’ve played 7 rounds in 5 days in 100+ temps with the Open next weekend. Get the hell out of there and focus on the bigger tournament.

I'd have a hard time giving a poo poo about a match for 3rd place too when (arguably) the biggest event of the season is coming up.

Also in terms of 3 wood chat, I found a mint condition with the sticker still on it g410 3 wood head to use when my current one eventually breaks since I tee off with it so often. It's probably my most favorite club I've ever owned.

I'm buying new grips. Ebay has a ton of listings for Golf Pride New Decade grips. You can get 13 grips for under 60 bucks. Are these legit? They normally sell for 10 a pop from reputable places

They are almost certainly fake/Chinese made.

Just as an aside, I ordered custom clubs 2 months ago, and the shipping time was almost 2 months long. It let you see what components were back ordered. Club heads? 3 days to customize. Shafts? 2 weeks.

Grips? 2 months out of stock. I'd be wary of any online order for grips from a non-reputable source. Your best bet might be to go to a local golf shop and try your luck.

Yeah the big ramp up in golf's popularity, combined with the pandemic really seemed to hammer some parts of equipment manufacturing. I had my club regrip all of mine and it took them almost 2 months to get the grips in.

Seems like everything across the board is being hit by supply chain issues. My ballmarkers took twice as long as they should have, graphics cards are impossible to get, I've been building a simulator out in my house and I have everything except the mount/motor for the screen because apparently they're having a production slowdown as well. It's insane.

It is because nobody but Toyota knows how Just In Time manufacturing works, and they think "limit excess inventory" means "have no inventory." So now when Chinese manufacturing shuts down for two weeks, the ripple effects across all industries will be felt for years. This is especially true for complex or process intensive products like computer chips. There are maybe 5 facilities on the planet capable of producing CPU's and GPU's, and maybe only 3 of those (that I know of) that are capable of making modern tech. Their major problem right now is getting raw silicon which they can't get because all of the silicon mines and refineries either shut down for 2 weeks, or are at reduced capacity because of people getting sick, and because nobody keeps any inventory around anymore, there is no buffer to that reduced capacity.

I also heard that some part of the covid vaccine creation process uses elemental silicon but that could be bullshit.

I'm heading to Pine Dunes in Frankston, TX this weekend (Shoutout to Shane Bacon who knows what's up) https://twitter.com/shanebacon/status/961623242451558401?s=20 for a tournament organized on the No Laying Up message board. There will be 36 of us, teams of 12 from Houston, Dallas/Forth Worth, and Austin/San Antonio, playing in a Ryder Cup style tournament. We're all bringing beer or whiskey from our cities and we had a big raffle last night where we ended up donating a little over $3k to charity. I won a map of Pine Dunes created by Lie + Loft:

At this point we're just hoping we don't get rained out because we have 54 holes to play over Saturday and Sunday and the course actually gave us a free 4th round as a package deal, though I won't get to use it because I have about a 3.5 hour drive home after the round on Sunday.

USGA with a pretty clever idea to promote coverage of the Women's US Open

quote:

“Today, women’s sports, including golf, are stuck in a recurring cycle where media outlets don’t always receive significant return on investment when they cover events that lack household names. Simultaneously, it is nearly impossible for a sport to build household names without consistent and rich storytelling from the media,” said Craig Annis, the USGA’s chief brand officer. “As the governing body of golf, we feel a deep responsibility to be a leader in breaking that cycle in our sport, and we believe the Driving Equity Grant Program is an important next step in that progress. This is not a problem that will be solved overnight; however, if the entire industry works together and shines a brighter light on women in the game, we have an opportunity to change the future of golf.”

Awful Announcing posted:

As to how the program works, here’s the overview, again from the USGA:

*Applications open beginning June 2, 2021 and will be received on a rolling basis

*Grant amounts will range from $2,000 up to $10,000

*Grant funding will cover out-of-pocket expenses necessary to travel to and cover women’s golf events, including freelancer costs, or production costs or travel costs for special project(s) or feature(s) related to women’s golf or female golfers

*Eligibility criteria detailed below

The money isn’t huge; it’s $50,000 for a total pot, of course, and the minimum/maximum amounts cap the amount of coverage that will come from this. Still, it’s a meaningful number, and assuming the USGA will be picking and choosing to maximize exposure by outlet option, there could be a real increase in exposure for a fairly minimal outlay.

Presumably if it’s successful, too, the pool could increase year-over-year.

What will be important, though, is ensuring that the grant recipients are still allowed editorial freedom. Some major golf media outlets are already a bit, shall we say, deferential to players and golf powers in general. Any hint that the USGA is putting their thumb on the scale to get “positive” coverage however they define that would be met with plenty of backlash, that would possibly outweigh whatever gains were made for the women’s game. (What could be worse: rewarding outlets for puff pieces as a sort of pseudo-payola.)

Yeah the NLU guys immediately applied. We also just got into a pretty heated argument with them on the refuge over us wanting more women's coverage than they were providing, though they're still doing more than pretty much anyone else. We had that discussion and then 2 days later the USGA announced that grant program. Seems like we weren't the only ones wanting more coverage.

DJExile
Jun 28, 2007

If the USGA avoids putting their thumb on the scale I think it has some pretty good promise. Whether or not they can do that might be another story but at first glance this is a pretty good idea to help get the women's game more coverage.
