The mudflood thing mostly seems like people being astonished to learn Washington, D.C. and other cities were built on a literal swamps and that American infrastructure has been crumbling steadily for decades. It reminds me of the Wayfair child trafficking conspiracy theory, where people were looking at the prices on Wayfair's site and saying "that much for a desk? No way, that's got to come with a kid stuffed in there"

just finished “oceanic” by greg egan and there was a funny story where extraterrestrial visitors from a galaxy-spanning pan-species post-mortality civilization refuse to even consider allowing a technologically advanced but non-spacefaring buglike species to join them because the buglike species are obsessed with killing each other. i thought it was rude of the aliens to deny the bugs, but the bug people made a really strong argument that they would try to kill everyone they found in space lol.

Wait I thought "Oceanic" was the coming of age story about a teenager growing up in a society where the population is genetically engineered to be non-binary (one's phallus swaps between partners after coitus) and the society's origin in a spacefaring technologically advanced species was obscured by centuries of religious dogma. Wasn't "Incandescence" the story with the alien bugs?

I wasn't even expecting a "these things are real" response so even if it's human made someone has figured out some serious poo poo
one way or another we are being made privy to technology that will fundamentally change the world (or the suppression of that technology)

Our fastest known jet can go 2100mph and we know there's experimental poo poo that we know can go 10k mph but also we suddenly have craft that can do 40k mph vertically and come to a dead stop

For some reason I'm thinking we aren't getting the full picture here

Is it being smothered? Are people taking for granted that the US government, if nothing else, has confirmed that there are physical objects that exist that completely defy all of our understanding of aviation?

Also just clicked that admitting that it could be adversary technology means the possibility that someone out there has rockets that can go 40-50k mph and all of our defense systems are bunk
it's either aliens or the US has admitted we have no standing as a global superpower because we got lapped 10 times over in the arms race

i think the fact that the whole thing is tinged with the smell of UFOs/aliens is making the bombshell revelation of, "we may no longer have control over our own airspace," land a lot softer than it ought to otherwise

Yeah, I'm shocked that angle isn't getting more play but maybe it would on the day the report actually comes out. Right now it's getting like 5 minute spots as a jokey topic on news shows when it should be a horrifying revelation for a country that spends nearly a trillion dollars on defense.

Also curious to see how the new-era grifter crew like Cornell and Elizondo spin this. Probably time for them to show they have the goods or join the noise
