We added quite a few childhood vaccinations later than the rest of the world and several still remain unfunded. The prevailing thought when I was a kid and there were no vaccines was that children were less likely to suffer serious effects from them than adults - so encouraging them to become infected as kids was viewed as an immunisation of sorts against adult disease. I think most people who've had chickenpox remember it precisely because it made them miserable.

I caught a mystery pox when I was 12 and it caused my skin to peel in 50 cent sized pieces off head to toe 3 times Also gave me a transient arthritis thing in my hip for a month Doctor was like

I went to multiple friends houses for pox playdates when I was a kid, but somehow managed to avoid it. Until I was 18, during my first round of uni finals. It was extremely rough and I still have a couple scars on my face from it. My brother was young enough to get the vaccine and I'm glad kids can get vaxxed for it now because it's an extremely miserable and itchy time.

I finally got a covid vaccine appointment after weeks of trying (40+ in Victoria). Still have to wait three weeks and take a train for an hour to the other side of town, and hope they don't run out of Pfizer in the meantime, but semi relieved.

Off to Bunnings to get a new toilet seat because I was sitting on the outermost cover bit (the one you close the toilet with not the seat) and it fuckin broke into 3 pieces Got a floor mostly sanded back to bare timber, probably half a metre of the bit around the edge to go. Backs cooked. Made some loving SICK corned beef last night with Yorkshire pudding and roast veggies and cauli bake.
