I was returning from a summer high-school exchange program in Japan when a younger kid in the group who was sitting next to me on the plane started telling me about Lunar and how cool it was. He handed me his earbuds and had me listen to a couple music/voice tracks from the game disc before blasting my ears with a loud-as-gently caress data track with not a word of warning. :waycool:

Well, that's my Lunar story. I would have liked to have played it back in the day, but never had the right console. That data sounded tight.

working designs was infamous for this sort of thing, along with "localizations" that half the time just consisted of them making up entirely new dialogue on the fly

i loved eternal blue complete as a kid but it was definitely tuned under the expectation that you would kill every single enemy in every single dungeon

Much more than a little thing, but nioh 2's hitboxes are amazingly good and accurate. If an animation makes your character jump or crouch down, this can cause attacks to go right over you or under you even though this kind of accuracy is only ever relevant for a couple specific moves on specific weapons. This means things like the splitstaff vault attack is actually useful as a dodge just because it puts you in the air for a moment, no iframes needed. 150 hours in this game and I have never once felt like a hitbox was even a hair off, which I can't say for any similar game.

You can put cargo into vehicles in Death Stranding by just going up to the cargo bed while holding stuff in your hands and letting go. Sam even does a different animation for putting an item in from each hand. I've played this game all the way through and didnt realize until I hit the weather station again on my second playthrough

Since it's come up here a few times, I just want to highlight Polygon's interview with the main translator for Ace Attorney. Mostly about the difficulties inherent in the upcoming prequel localization, but there's stuff about earlier things like Japanifornia that's super neat.

She also reveals her favorite pun name from the prequels, which of course is the real thing we're turning up for. Her favorites are the Russian strongmen brothers, Bif and Tchikin Strogenov.

The combat system in ME2 is doing a way better job at making me engage with cover, powers, and swapping weapon types (especially the sniper rifles :kiss:) compared to the first game, where I mostly just charged forward with an assault rifle. I still think the switch to ammo rather than the first game's overheat system was a mistake, and it feels like the weapons are more generic than some of the Star Wars blasters you could get in the first game, but otherwise combat feels a lot more fun.

If you're playing for the first time in the LE, the gun variety in 1 didn't exist for the original release. They added all the semi auto and burst stuff.

Also, in the original you basically couldn't even use all the weapons unless you were playing soldier. In the original you had a ton of weapon sway unless you put points into the appropriate weapon skill and since soldier is the only class that gets all the weapon skills it meant that other classes were forced to carry weapons they couldn't really use because you wouldn't be able to hit anything.

Also you couldn't look down the sights of guns you weren't trained in, including the sniper rifle. That's right, if you weren't trained in snipers you couldn't even look through the scope, making them completely useless. At least you could in theory use the shotgun without aiming down sights.

Okay I thought this was the case. Was surprised when I played an engineer in me1 LE and could still draw and aim an assault rifle without issue. Thought maybe I was misremembering.

The ME1 pistol turns into a no cooldown having sub machine gun if you're fully trained in it. It's surprisingly strong. You may have had that.

I did not have a submachine gun, because I hate those things. I had a pistol that could fire maybe six shots before overheating, but laid down big debuffs.

All pistols in ME1 were semi auto.

My bad. I didn’t mean semi auto didn’t exist before LE, I meant they added semi auto ARs, burst ARs, burst snipers and a few other things to the LE that didn’t exist in 1.

Didn't ME1 also have some kind of achievement system that unlocked skills for other classes on repeat playthroughs?

That is still in the remake, yeah. Certain cheevos unlock certain bonuses or abilities.

You could cheat it a little with a Geth Assault Rifle, iirc. Even without the assault rifle skill (so no aiming completely down the sights), it was incredibly accurate and powerful.

using sights is highly specialized non-transferable knowledge and it is not fair to assume legendary supersoldier shepard has the mastery needed to aim down the sights of a rifle just because they put in the blood, sweat and tears to learn how to do so with a pistol

In Mass Effect 2 you get access to a weapon type by just finding it in the Collector ship, so maybe it's an Alliance standards thing. You're only allowed to be good at certain weapons depending on your class, so Shepard pretends to be bad with everything else until a certain point in ME2 when they're pretty sure nobody's enforcing that anymore.

Worth noting that Shepard only really starts being able to push back against working for Cerberus after that happens. Coincidence? Doubt it.

Sister thread is talking about The Surge games, and it made me remember one of my favorite little things in the sequel. You meet Warren, the protagonist from the first game, and when you see him at his hideout, he's humming "Prisoner," the song from the Ops rooms in the first game (it's not pointed out or anything, it's just a nice little easter egg if you played the first game). Later, near the end, they have a full Ops container (safe room from the first game) sitting in a warehouse and when you enter it to activate the medbay, "Prisoner" begins playing over the speaker, just like it used to.

"Prisoner" by Stumfol if you're interested. It's good, kinda folk-y and a bit melancholy. I thought it was totally out-of-place for The Surge when I first heard it in the Ops rooms, but then I listened to the whole thing outside of the game and it's much more appropriate than it seems.

The CREO Ops room is really late, but as soon as I saw it, I knew there was going to be something neat in there, and hearing "Prisoner" was enough for me. I stood there for a few minutes after banking my scrap and stuff, just listening to the song and smiling. :)

Anybody lose their glasses?
The Surge games are pretty enjoyable for what they are, I really enjoyed 2 outside the boss fights gently caress those. One of the consoles near the end of the game on your return visit to the quarantine hospital area is from one of the ops teams ambushing you around the city and it’s basically ‘how the gently caress do we keep seeing these biometrics appearing and disappearing and have multiple confirmed kills which is a nice late game foreshadowing if you still hadn’t figured it out.

I thought FFXV was mostly mediocre and disappointing but I was really impressed how much some of the caves you explore look like actual caves. The lighting, the coloring, the rock formations, the size and etc. are really spot on. Despite being a ubiquitous videogame environment videogame caves are almost always super unrealistic. Someone on the development team clearly cared a lot about getting caves right and I appreciate it.

15 went through significant devhell so maybe there was just three guys quietly sitting in a corner for 8 years while everything else was getting shuffled and rearranged and thrown out and reworked just continually polishing the Cave Set the whole time
