Naomi Osaka (and every athlete who doesn't want to do mandatory press) should just "both teams played hard" her way through press conferences from now until leagues/events stop requiring it.

That or adopt the Bill Belichick school of giving grumbly non-answers about anything current, but then going into insanely detailed 15 minute answer if they ask about punters of the 1970s or blocking tight ends of the late 80s or whatever similarly niche subjects are pertinent to each sport.

seems unfair that Naomi Osaka can't evade a single reporter but Serena can hide in panic rooms to avoid dope testers all day

Just pivot every question into being an excuse to discuss whatever product you signed the most recent endorsement deal for. How did I feel when I made that shot? I felt refreshed, calm, and totally energized, like when you are using a Breathe-Right(TM) nasal strip. Why did we win? We just gave it 20 percent more effort - the same 20% increase in clinical oxygen levels you get when using Breathe-Right(TM) nasal strips. Etc.

I don't care about or watch most press conferences, because they're usually a waste of time with the athlete giving non-answers or reporters asking insanely broad "questions" to fill out a boring recap. "Talk about how you felt out there tonight." So stop requiring them. If you're the type of person who is interested in giving thoughtful answers - Jordan Spieth off the top of my head gives real answers- then you'll probably do them anyway

I can’t find an example but I saw some video with Bill that was basically that. It might have been an online show, filmed in-house for the Pats? But it was Bill going through specific plays from the previous game and breaking everything down. It was really cool, he seemed perfectly relaxed and happy being there.

Or lacrosse, the sport Belichick truly loves.

The best example was the NFL 100 team shows they did a few years ago, where Belichick was the coach they had on hand to break down film of players from the 40s and whatnot. It also comes up a couple of times every year, particularly if someone brings up stuff related to teams he worked for back in the day, like the 70s Colts or 80s Giants, and he'll talk forever about guys like Bert Jones or Mark Bavaro.AndrewP posted:Or lacrosse, the sport Belichick truly loves. Yeah, he does a show called Belichick's Breakdowns on patriots.com where he'd go through a bunch of plays and point out interesting things that happen. Usually likes to focus on like blocking assignments and guys who setup big plays on defense or special teams. Here's one I threw up on youtube ages ago from the Pats-Colts game in 2014 where a random dude ran for 200 yards. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnBqROTUcE8 Not really something the general fan wants to see, but really fascinating for nerds, maybe I'm wrong, maybe this stuff would be really popular if media focused more on it!

I love these breakdowns, but it would be hard to do them during a broadcast, without knowing the outcome. From past years Super Bowl, it was fascinating to see all the running plays that helped setup Gronks screen td.

I've been an admirer of Dan Le Batard and his show but never a regular listener, during and post-ESPN, but they've been doing a charity marathon today and it's been a good time since I turned it on. A retired Bob Ley with a full beard just raised thousands for ALS research by telling old stories after chomping on a jalapeno pepper and getting redfaced as gently caress. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IQsR87kT48

Andrew Bucholtz's writing has become such a parody of itself I'm pretty sure that Awful Announcing fired him years ago and just programmed a bot to write his pieces instead. The sentence structure just gives it away, with so many starting with "And" or some variation of "it's also notable" https://twitter.com/awfulannouncing/status/1401666395973341191
