It’s increasingly common in YA world building. Similar to how in SW the Republic and the Jedi were pretty poo poo and the Empire actually did bring order.

Rowling still wants to make money with expanded universe stuff so they did the usual thing where the explicit bad guys are actually just a land of contrasts. Selling merch from 4 groups is better than 3.

You know how every 3rd person on Twitter today describes themselves as 'chaotic' as if that's a good thing? They're all proudly Slytherin.

Also the books specifically do explain that each of the four house founders got to pick kids they wanted. So the evil dude took evil kids, the other guy valued bravery, the next smarts, and the last was kind and took the leftovers.

It's not a comprehensive list of all possible personalities!

"world building" sucks rear end because if you must have a world that's different from our own in your story it's nearly always better to just have it be implied

like imagine if who framed roger rabbit had a whole explanation of why theres a toontown, where toons come from and how they're born, who judge doom was and so on, that would suck rear end, i accept the premise as it is and don't need to have it justified

I remember watching a Tolkien documentary once (it was either when the first movie came out, or may have been the 50th anniversary of LOTR). One of the people interviewed had worked for a publisher since the 60s and joked that Tolkien was the worst thing that ever happened to him, because about once a month he'd get a manuscript from some Tolkien wannabe that arrived in a crate. In the crate would be dozens of maps, dictionaries for made up languages, paintings of swords, fabric swatches for every outfit every character wears, family trees, "concept art", models of castles, etc. Then shoved in the bottom would be ~200 pages of cliched drivel so bad even vanity publishers would reject it.

This was me with game of thrones. Read the book and thought it was pretty poorly written. Powered through a couple more years later when a friend brought them up. Can't believe that's who got chosen for a big HBO special and don't know why people think he's a good writer.

The real value of the Amber novel series was that it led to the Amber role-playing game, which was much more fun.

It's been hashed out a 1000 times in the thread, and that was years ago when I used to read it. Some people are undoubtedly more gullible than others, sometimes realistic stories are still creative writing, sometimes unbelievable ones are real. There is no way to tell, this is the internet, and piles of meta-posts going back and forth about "This is fake morons!" and "No it's not/Who cares." just wastes everyone's time. It's thread 'policy' to take things at face value and go from there, otherwise where's the fun in it?

If you can show that a story is bullshit by some sort of factual error, fine. "I loaded up my .357 revolver with 30 rounds before answering the door," "He pointed at me with the third arm growing out of his forehead," "She slammed the car into an expert J-turn before transforming it into a jet and flying off," something that just isn't possible is good reason to say "This is bollocks." But if your problem with the stories is the people in them are too stupid to be real, I have some very bad news for you about people.

Like I said, I don't have any problem with the stories. Or really any problem at all I guess. Yep, it’s a lot of fun when someone can Sherlock Holmes out why it’s fake but otherwise, just take it at face value. Most of its creative writing but if you’re not gonna engage with the material as written why bother?
