I was gonna say we're on cruisers it should be fine!

but yeah, modded starbase defences outscale shiptypes hard until you get to battleships / titans, even then you need a full 200/200 fleet to take one usually.

Please tell me the mod fixes the nightmare which is the engineering research rate. The vanilla engineering tech tree is hellish enough without additional techs.

And yeah this is what I was afraid of. Getting attacked from multiple fronts like this is really rough.

Paradox games use a variety of systems for their military simulation, but they all tend towards variations on "warscore". Essentially, each side attempts to do the kind of things that would win a war -- winning battles, occupying territory, enacting blockades, conquering objectives, etcetera. These are assigned different point values which add up into a "score", that says how good the war is going for whichever side. You want your score to be good and your enemy's to be bad.

392 is a large number. Usually these systems work around a 0-100 scale. You can infer from it that the PATO coalition is really goddamn raring to fight, and has a significant military advantage over the UN.

Now, they don't necessarily have four realities worth of advantage over us, -392 is a difference factor. It's their good, our bad, and a couple of other things. It includes battles, occupations, and three important numbers called Ticking Warscore, Duration, and War Exhaustion. In the initial declaration you can see they stated their objective as taking two star systems from us as well as a humiliation. Until they occupy those star systems, and we hold them, we will gain Good Number steadily -- that's Ticking Warscore. This both gives us Good Number and also effectively serves as Bad Number for them. If we LOSE those star systems, the points for them flip over to American control.

Duration is there to prevent gamey, immediate wars. The NAF will be extremely reluctant to stop fighting immediately after declaring war, represented by a big Bad Number that will go down over time. This doesn't COMPLETELY prevent short wars, but they generally have to be extremely one-sided stompfests to overcome the Duration modifier.

War Exhaustion is the way Stellaris keeps fights from going on absolutely forever. People will not tolerate Forever War. Every fight, win or lose, and just slowly over time, will build up War Exhaustion, which will contribute by reducing the size of that -392 flat out rather than just adding points to either side. War Exhaustion also operates independently; an attacking nation that hits 100% War Exhaustion will be put on a hard time limit, after which the other side will be able to force them to accept a white peace.

We are a long way from that, however. Basically, the Americans think they can take us and they're PROBABLY right based on that number. If we can completely bludgeon them to death with defensive starbases, we might be able to force them to a white peace, but I don't see any fast way out of this war.

Frankly, this exact situation is, if I can be permitted to be a bit meta, why I voted for Isolation; We have a lot of territory so we really, really need to build up our internal economy and expand in the space we have so we can gain the resources to attempt to fortify our borders properly.

On the plus side, this war should be... not winnable, as in 'invade their space and take their poo poo', but I'm hopeful that we can whitepeace out of it eventually.

Secretary-General Knotts is brought into the war room of the Deuxième-Versailles, which hadn't seen a UNSG since the 'Diaster of Regulus' in 2269.
But now one shares the room with the Regulus' representative as well as that of the Sovereign Mechanized, while advisors, tacticians and assorted corporate bureaucrats gather and lay starcharts, fleet movements and projections for the UNSG to inspect.

The first order of business was to determine what exactly the appropriate UN response would be.

The stated war goals of the New American President in their declaration of war were as follows:
- Secure Jorarnrir
- - Expulsion of the United Nations from the 'Orion Bridge' (UN: 'Western Frontier')
- - - Containment of the United Nations and free access to the Orion Arm for all members of PATO.

It would be entirely possible (though unlikely) for the UN to attempt to invade New Colorado, to topple the New American regime and replace it with something more sympathetic to the corporate cause. Or even, just outright conquer the NAF and absorb them into the UN proper. Of course, escalating the conflict into an all out total-war between the two powers could demonstrably backfire. And the UN is hardly equipped for such an endeavour right now.

Secretary-General Knotts therefore simply issues the same (if not extremely similar) demands back at the New Americans.
- Secure Jorarnrir
- - Expulsion of the New American Federation and any allies from the Orion Arm
- - - Cutting the New American Federation down to size.

There is a distinction to be made between 'Americans' and 'New Americans', of the former there are many spread out across human space, and even here on the Bastion. Ironically enough Knotts herself is American, born in Pittsburgh in the 2180s back on Earth.
The New Americans however are the children and now even grandchildren of those who fled from Texas and what remained of the Southwest after Yellowstone. Their entire world view has been shaped by the experience of seeing 1/3 of their continent ruined while the East Coast continued to prosper, and being taught nothing but the past glories of their old pre-corporate era ancestors.

The 'Grand Fleet of America' remains stationed in Mirach opposite the United Nations Navy in Alioth, while the 'Auxiliary Fleet of America' has entered the Jorarnrir system to exterminate the voidborne aliens and likely keep any UN vessels away.

The Caph Station was previously the most heavily devloped and armored space station in UN space before the construction of Alioth. It held a great many facilities to be used in the event of another war with Regulus - including many shipyards and armament factories which had remained dormant and unmanned since the 'Independent Recognition Act' under UNSG Renaud. Now ferries were carrying tens of thousands of Regulusi workers from Ares to the station to operate the factories and build UN warships.

In order to afford the huge increase in demand for alloys, all surplus non-military resources are redirected from the Bastion and instead prepared to be sold to any surrounding power that will be them in exchange for alloys, or funds to further expand the UN's own alloy manufacturing. Many of the more minor corporations and lobbying groups across the Bastion have been forward with their support for the war effort and contributing monetary and material aid almost certainly in hope of the favour being returned down the line.

The viability of Strike Force November is now considered entirely infeasible. After the Battle of Jorarnrir against the voidborne aliens many of the UN's advisors agree that had the Strike Force been used in it's original purpose to fend-off Patria Grande invasion long enough for the UNN to arrive that the Strike Force would have been almost immediately wiped out. It would make little sense to just scrap the Pritchard-class corvettes at such a crucial time and instead they are sent to Alioth to merge with the Navy, while admiral Patrick Cross is relieved of duty and remains on the Bastion.

Our eyes in the lands of CoBra are able to give us intel on the Auxiliary Fleet of America's progres inside the Jorarnrir System - and thankfully it seems even they struggle to combat the incredibly resilient voidborne aliens.

With the habitat on Alderamin I - Gwangyang - now established and stabilized, work begins at once on alloy processing for the war effort.

And with the Westgate as the main line of defence against the NAF and their new Brazillian allies, the defence corps of the Bastion are tasked at once with devising improvements and upgrades to our current space station designs.

After the fall of Neo-Tokyo and the Japanese communist regime at the hands of New India, the republic stripped the planet bare of any useful resources and looted most of the military and infrastructure equipment the old Commonwealth had left. Leaving it ripe for New Indian corporations and influential individuals inside the Indian parliament and their backers to set up schemes and firms intended to help the new Japanese state but almost certainly designed from the outset to funnel as much money out of Neo-Tokyo and to New Delhi as possible.

It is unfortunate for the republic then that Patria Grande sent a major relief effort to the Japanese (against New India's permission, but they were hardly going to oppose the aid fleet when it had PeeGee naval escorts). Patria Grande assisted the Indian-installed puppet government of Neo-Tokyo as little as they could all the while giving huge relief to the common people of the planet, until they were powerful enough that they overthrew the puppet prime minister and installed their socialist parliament, pledging their total support for the syndicalists and cutting off contact with New India.

In early 2286, the Japanese and Hispanic socialists finally cemented their new friendship with the formation of the Union of Socialist Systems.

It's stated goal is "the liberation and empowerment of all the oppressed peoples of the Milky Way and an end to the cruel cycle of consumption and destruction in the name of baseless financial growth."
The Scandinavian Union joins later in the year and the three powers have already devised plans on how best to use Nu-Xandar, the perfect planet, as the new homeland of the revolution from which 'all the galaxy shall be freed'.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Just beyond the Jorarnrir System, the UN-Brigandine and Emerald construction crews have been working to cut off NAF from the Orion Arm. The Ynem system has already been locked down and the Paburh system is next, which luck would have it also has an Earth-like present.

Paburh IVa is an incredibly dry and hot place with little vegetation except on the shores of the few large bodies of water scattered across the planet. There are salt flats in the lowlands and stony unpleasant mountain peaks where the wind whips about and makes farming or even any large construction infeasible without some terraforming work. A scientist aboard suggests naming the planet New Chile, entirely unaware if a "Nuevo Chile" exists or not inside Patria Grande.

And as if on cue, a Patria Grande science vessel enters the system. It hails the UN-Brigandine and states it's peaceful intentions as an exploration ship before, probably mockingly, wishing us luck in the war against PATO.

The moment of rare rapport with a syndicalist vessel is quickly brought to an end by the arrival of a herd of Space Amoeba into the system which unfortunately also hinders any efforts to build a space station there.

It is June 2287 and the NAF has crossed the border into the Cursa System.

The UNN, now combined with Strike Force November and the new cruisers has greatly improved it's fighting capability and moves at once to intercept the New Americans in Cursa, confident that the Alioth fortress will hold long enough in any kind of counter-attack for them to return in time.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Later in the summer of '87 contact is made with two new foreign powers just beyond New India. The first being New Kazan, the most centralized and well-established of the Russian diaspora so far.
Chancellor Tarasova welcomes the news of the UN's survival, and even more so the revelation of the other Russian survivors from New Moscow now under the protection of the United African Empire. Trade links are soon set up with New Kazan (though -really just extensions of pre-existing trade convoys to New Delhi, as traveling more southernly through the Western Frontier is obviously now the safest option right now).

The second new power however is perhaps a little more cause for concern, as the instant a communication channel is established with them in Secretary-General Knotts' chambers, an obnoxiously bombastic rendition of 'Rule Britannia' booms from her monitor.

On the monitor stands a grizzled old admiral, adorned in her tarnished armour with numerous medals hanging from it and looking like it's been repaired more times to count. She stood with her hands clasped behind her back on the bridge of a (presumably quite large) ship, with at least a hundred or more crew members and sailors visible behind her working away.
"We meet again United Nations. This is Grand Admiral Austin of the supreme fleet of the British Admiralty" there came a resounding 'Huzzah!' from every crew remember behind her.

"For eighty years The Fleet has remained in operation. The greatest collection of vessels to ever take to the skies and beyond, we all pull our weight here and we all may lead one day. The Admiralty has no qualms with the United Nations though should you bring trouble to British Space, The Fleet will make quick work of any who stands before her. The UN has lived a comfortable life deep within all the other colonies of our long lost home, but The Fleet exists at the edge, beyond us there lies only chaos and disorder - a hundred disparate and divided systems, filled with anarchists, bandits and petty lords. The Fleet has been holding back the tide of barbarism and you have never even known it. God Save The Fleet"

Battle of Cursa

1st of July 2289, the United Nations Navy enters the Cursa system, to find the UN outpost still under seige from NAF forces and moves to engage at once.

The first shots are fired at New America, a flurry of missiles from our cruisers that arcs across space towards the NAF ships which quickly disengage from Cursa station to intercept us.

The New Americans have a numerical advantage, but our new cruisers are simply too armored to be phased by their swawm of corvettes and just two or three are able to put out so much fire in return that they stand little chance.

The Auxillary Fleet of America is in total disarray. Any fears of what this war may bring to the UN are dispelled within hours of seeing the state of the NAF forces.

While few of their ships are outright destroyed, there are still many isolated and scattered after their hasty retreat, it'll take weeks if not months for the Auxiliary fleet to regather and recoup. Their invasion at Cursa has been halted, and the invigorated, emboldened UNN awaits it's next task eagerly.

I have been reading more Human history, I am close to the second world war now I believe. But there is one funny little event that stood out to me.

And why's that Major?

Well it's remarkably similar to the situation these Humans on Lagos have found themselves in and now we must come to solve it.

Indulge me then, how?

Well, the Australians, they were the ones from the big south easterly landmass of Old Earth, they too had a pest problem not too dissimilar to this. Emus, I believe they were called, a large flightless avian species. They ruined crops and so a group of soldiers were sent to exterminate them, with machine guns no less.

And they killed them all?

No, they failed miserably

The firepower and support provided by Cursa station proved to be a key part of the success at the Battle of Cursa, and thankfully final designs for new expanded starbases have been realised.

And conveniently UNSG Knotts manages to pull some strings with some old friends back in Standard Dynamics and manages to acquire a shipment of alloys for the war effort at a cheaper price.

Since the Battle of Cursa morale across the Bastion could not be higher; lowers and uppers alike are now enthusiastic about our prospects and all wish to do their part for the war effort.
There only comes a brief pause at the news that the Republic of New India is trying to establish closer relations with PATO. Now, association status simply means PATO and New India cannot go to war, and they may provide some material aid to one another, but it can be a precursor to the New Indians joining the New Americans within the Perseus Arm Treaty Organization.

In 2291 the Grand Fleet of America is spotted once again entering the Mirach system, on a straight course for Alioth with a troop transport convoy following behind, the UNN is sent at once to intercept. Meanwhile a small detachment from the New America Ranger Corps has invaded the most western tip of the Western Frontier - Zaurak, it is a low priority target and the system is abandoned to be retaken at a later date.

On December 7th 2291, the UN makes first contact with an alien empire proper, in the form of the New Shire Accord.
The Zunguatese are a squat warthog like species, almost all of them have four tusks and scruffy fur, it is unknown just how similar they may be to porcine-like species that once existed back on Earth, but the appearance is uncanny.

From far beyond the northern reaches of China their signal was received, wishing to open formal diplomatic channels with the UN.

"This is Sage Sarim den Armok, of the New Shire Accord, and on behalf of all the Zunguatese I extend my warmest welcomes to you, Secretary-General of the United Nations"

It could not speak a word of English, but seemed to know Chinese fluently and a translator had to be called upon.

"We understand you have lost your homeworld, we too have befallen such a terrible fault - though ours admittedly is still in one piece, it is still a place I do not think our people can ever return. The Shire has been torn apart by war and strife and now the Zunguatese are scattered to the stars. The People's Imperial China have been an accommodating friend in our trying times and through them we have learnt of the UN and that you too have shown to be an agreeable people. Though almost four thousand light years separates us and any attempts at trade at this point in time may be a little too much to ask, I wished only to greet the great UN our people have heard much about. And I ask that should you meet any colonies and isolated systems anywhere out there also belonging to the lost children of The Shire that you please show them respect we have been afforded."

Mirachi Campaign

Feburary 12th 2292.
The UNN has entered the Mirach system, to find the Grand Fleet of America had already began turning around and trying to head back deeper into NAF territory when they had learnt our fleet's approach. Just like the Auxiliary fleet it appears to be composed of small corvettes, it seems whatever previous conflicts the New Americans fought they relied on numerical supremacy alone and never had need to innovate their designs much when they already proved so capable.

The Battle of Mirach rages on through the early months of 2292, a constant back and forth between the two major fleets.

____________________________________________________________________________________

June 21st 2292, Secretary-General Cynthia Knotts passes away in her sleep.

Patrick Cross, formerly a Congo Special-Operations-Branch leader before being assigned command of Strike Force November is chosen as new UNSG, his military past considered a key asset to lead the UN in the ongoing war. He is unfortunately not terribly popular with the Lowers for some of his tougher policies.
Also of major note is the fact that he is the first Secretary-General of the United Nations not born on Earth. He was born right here in Paris-on-Bastion in 2243. The very last of the Earth-born generation are beginning to wither away, and with it, humanity's last connection to our old home.

____________________________________________________________________________________
Mirachi Campaign (continued)
Captain Eren Karakas of UNN Cruiser UN-Damocles

It is August 2292. The Battle of Mirach has been going on for over half a year now. I do not think the scale - both in terms of time and distance had ever really been taken into consideration when planning for conflicts in space.
For now the fighting has been confined to the orbit of Mirach III. NAF corvette squadrons prowl the area, using the research-base that orbits the gas giant as a make-shift base of operations. Any UN corvettes, or lone destroyers are quickly overwhelmed by the NAF squadrons, but when coupled with our cruisers the New American ships are simply no match.

The NAF ships have neither the firepower to do much damage to our cruisers, nor the armor to withstand the amount of fire we can put out.

Not to mention the awesome power of the Maiman-class Cruiser and it's incredibly powerful laser weapon, that perhaps our defence companies may have over-compensated its power just a little after witnessing what the PeeGees had unleashed on us.

Scoring actual kills on enemy ships seems to be a rarity in this battle - at least, that seems evident for such small vessels that once damaged are easily able to get away. Some of the damaged NAF ships make it back to the Mirach III base to later regroup with the other patrolling squadrons, some simply flee the system altogether.

But by late 2292, the UNN fleet has managed to get close enough to the converted Mirach III research base that fleeing NAF ships no longer can return to it, instead opting to retreat out of the system, and slowly but surely their numbers dwindle until just the UN ships and the main NAF Mirach station remains.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Despite their previous bluster, news reaches the Bastion that the British Admiralty has given in to demands by the New Indian Republic to provide the republic with regular material and monetary shipments. While the British seem to be focused solely around 'The Fleet', there are a number of planets under their possession, where and how many is still not exactly known but what is known is these planets exist solely to supply and man their space vessels. So how long they'll be willing to give up these assets to the Indians is unknown.

India has been growing immensely in power the last few years. The loss of their investment in Japan has angered many in the Indian parliament and there has been a major backlash against any sort of perceived collectivism.

____________________________________________________________________________________
UNICA

UNICA first settled Pontianak in 2277 with jus a few hundred thousand brave colonists. Now just sixteen years later as 2293 rolls round there are over a billion people who call the planet home. The limits of what the sealed habitats can provide for the settlers, safe from the intense humidity of the surface of 61-Cygni IIIb, has been reached. What's more, mining corps on The Bastion are eager to start exploiting the rich mineral and crystal deposits the planet holds and there is only so much exosuit clad miners can do, it's almost the same amount of effort and cost as space mining.
And so in March 2293, the decision is made to begin the first terraforming project since the disastrous and costly attempts to terraform Mars two centuries prior.

Enthusiasm could not be higher among the colonists at the prospect of finally living on a world without the need for safe self-contained environments or suits, to be able to finally breathe clean fresh oxygen and drink real water and grow real food just as their ancestors did.

____________________________________________________________________________________

In the summer of 2293 contact is made with two new powers established from the Hegira from Earth, both of them existing at the edge of 'civilized human space' - ever more credence given to the words of Grand Admiral Austin upon hearing from the two new states.

"Greetings Secretary-General Cross. We do not receive much information from across the Voiceless Nightmare, just bits and pieces. We knew other humans had survived back in the old systems but never how many or how well they fared - we have been rather preoccupied ourselves out where it must be said. Strauss-Metz Defence Systems left Earth a mere corporation but through my hand I have transformed it into an Order that stands as a shining beacon of prosperity and hope out here in a land of chaos. "

"Beneath the surface of New Brandenburg our underground fortress cities produce some of the most sophisticated war machines imaginable but not for conquest or glory but for order. Haha. There are many lost and isolated systems beyond us, human - and otherwise. And they are...aimless and often cruel places, so wherever possible The Order has stepped in to help those being mistreated or maligned. Should you ever find yourself crossing the Voiceless Nightmare, I trust the United nations too will act as a light in the darkness and not another malcontent the German Military Order needs to pacify."

"Who is this? How did you breach our communications chann- ah. It is you. I suppose this day was bound to come sooner or later. Later preferably."

"The Visegrad Alliance has little to discuss with the United Nations. We have become entirely self-sufficient and have no need for the cruel corporations that seek to only line their pockets. The Network cares for and provides for all the children of Poland, Czechia, Slovakia and Hungary. We carry the legacy of our forefathers to the stars, and no Principality, Admiralty or ceaseless hordes of criminals and degenerates from beyond the Victorious Night will stop us. Certainly no United Nations."

"And so you are the reason we see the fleets of the Princes moving away from Sao Paulo? Well killing them all would suit us just fine. But seeing you both killing each other so neither remains would bring us just as much satisfaction. Just leave us be, and there will be no issues, corpo."

____________________________________________________________________________________
Mirachi Campaign (conclusion)
Captain Eren Karakas of UNN Cruiser UN-Damocles

With the Grand Fleet of America seen to and now off repairing and regrouping somewhere in some distant NAF system the siege of the main Mirach Station commences.
It is unknown just how many people reside on the Mirach station, but it is a fortress none the less and most of it's inhabitants are either soldiers or were aware of the risk of living on such a place at the forefront NAF territory, and the New Americans started this conflict. There is only mild apprehension about seeing the structure utterly destroyed regardless of whose onboard. They would have done the same to Alioth, and could they reach it almost certainly Regulus City.

The cruisers are able to draw in closer to the station, easily brushing off any incoming fire and launching their own missiles before falling back to repair the minimal damage over the next week or two before heading back in, a constant cycle of bombardment that gives the Mirachi defenders no time to recover - and no time to escape. Though there were a number of corvettes being repaired at the station at the beginning of our siege, they tried to escape - unsuccessfully.

On the 7th March 2295 the Mirachi Campaign was finally over and the system under UN control, the border to New America had been breached.

____________________________________________________________________________________

The UNN Fleet quickly seized upon the victory in Mirach and with NAF forces in disarray and the main fleet being repaired (and almost certainly updated in face of the power our cruisers weld), it advanced unopposed along the frontline to the Algol system.

The Algol station is miniscule compared to Mirach, and right now entirely cut off from the rest of the NAF facing down the UNN Fleet alone. A single quick burst of missiles from the UNN's cruisers give the Algol station a clear enough message, and they surrender at once lest they face annihilation.

Just over a year has passed since Mirach, and the fleet is now already moving onto the third NAF system in the Orion Arm.

____________________________________________________________________________________

It is unknown what exactly drove the parliament of New India to vote in favour of war. Whether it was to please the warhawks in their parliament and constant rhetoric which has riled up the people of New Delhi, or their ceaseless military build up that necessitated a conflict to justify itself. Or just maybe, the Indians wanted that perfect paradise planet that the socialists now control. Whatever the reason, on the 29th April the Republic of New India declared war the Scandinavian Union.

And by extension the entire Union of Socialist Systems, in what has been dubbed 'The Second Indian War on Communism'. While New Delhi was able to lay a crushing blow to Neo-Tokyo, they may have bitten off more than they can chew in this war, and many in the UN are eagerly curious to see how Patria Grande will fare in its first war.

____________________________________________________________________________________
UNICA

For the past year the final stages of Pontianak's terraforming project have been undertaken. Squadrons of UNN bombers (likely intended for NAF planets should the UN Navy ever get so bold) were requisition by the colonial administration thanks to a few misplaced and altered documents, and now these huge planes are flying across the skies of Pontianak releasing clouds of a specially created chemical to both cool the air and act as a defoliant agent to remove the jungles that cover every landmass.

On May 18th 2298, UNICA's first terraforming project is complete and considered a monumental success.

Pontianak in the 2270s v the 2290s.

The endless jungles that once covered all of Pontianak are now just found along the equator and already new flora is beginning to take hold in the areas the jungles have retreated from.
Very few animals were actually saved from Earth and brought aboard the Bastion at the time of Earth's destruction, due to space and concerns of not having enough food to feed both humans and any rescued fauna. But thankfully, both New India and the United African Empire (which Congo has began trading with extensively) brought a number of animals with them on their colonial escape from Old Earth, and they have been kind enough to sell some old familiar species to the UNICA to populate Pontianak with. (it should be noted UNICA's terraforming of the planet likely killed millions if not billions of local flora and fauna species, the true extent of which may not be understood for centuries)

Outside of Nu-Xandar, Ponitanak has just become the most desirable planet in all of known space. A Mars-sized planet with 0.8g gravity, breathable air and potable water and thousands upon thousands of miles of arable land, with no known downsides whatsoever. New planned-cities are being drawn up all over the surface of the planet to accommodate the huge influx of settlers likely to arrive from The Bastion.

An entire decade of celebrations and festivities is planned by local UNICA administrators in honor of all the work Lowers and Uppers alike contributed in making this hostile jungle a new home fit for humanity.

Following the success on Pontianak, more funds are given to UNICA to commence the terraforming of a second planet at once - this time Omaha, which is far larger than Earth ever was and it's surface practically begging with miles upon miles of farms and ranches - if only it wasn't for the planet-spanning microbes hell-bent on wiping out anything else with sentience. But that is exactly what UNICA will aim to expel with its new found resources.

UNN
The Sceptrum system was captured without incident. The station was found deserted when the UN Navy approached it, all personnel and everything remotely of value was missing. Commanders feared the station may have been rigged to explode when UN ships approached it, but two destroyers were able to dock and send a detachment of marines aboard to find it empty. The Sceptrum system is now under UN control but news arrives of a small counter-attack in Mirach in an attempt to recapture it and cut the UN fleet off from Alioth.

The UNN arrives back in Mirach, engaging the small NAF presence there for just a brief few hours before they all retreat again back deeper into New American space.

After the Second Battle of Mirach (if a mere hours-long scuffle can be compared to the previous years long campaign to capture the system) the UNN returns to Alioth for half a year - for much needed repairs and rearming but more importantly to swap out our crews, as the current sailors, technicians, engineers and officers have been on active duty now for almost fifteen years, and there are many who wish to be back with their families in time for the big New Year's celebration on The Bastion. With the new crews aboard and eager to put all their training and exercises in to practice the UNN is ordered to move out at once to intercept a NAF attempt to retake their border systems.

Even though some progress has been made in this conflict the New Americans show no sign of giving in yet, and many in the upper echelons of the UN predict this current state of affairs with the NAF will continue for another decade at least. And though we have seen some great successes it would be foolish to just assume any future ones will go just as well, the UNN must remain on guard at all times.

Despite repeated orders from UNSG Cross to merely follow the UNN and to only engage NAF ships in the systems of the Orion Arm, the Regulusi and SovMech fleets hatch some harebrained scheme to attempt a deep strike into NAF territory by cutting through the Iguo Veil and going for the New American core systems - a dangerous gambit as it will only open the UN's four core systems, and maybe even The Bastion itself, to attack in retaliation.

____________________________________________________________________________________
It is New Year's Eve, 2300.

There is a sense of elation across all The Bastion - and now Pontianak too.

The United Nations has survived the 23rd century when all hope seemed lost in 2200 when the revelation of Earth's demise was made public. The human race has endured the most cataclysmic and devastating event it could have ever faced, and not only survived but possibly come out of it even stronger?

In 2200 there was ten billion humans living on a stagnating, polluted and broken Earth. Now in the year 2300, from the UN's best estimates there are roughly one hundred and fifty one billion humans in the galaxy, that we know about. We have at our disposal technology unthinkable to our ancestors just a century ago, humans can be found on hundreds of worlds spanning thousands of lightyears, and we have made contact with other intelligent life in the galaxy, though the UN itself has really yet to form any significant relationship with any of them.

But it is now more than apparent to all that humanity is anything but united. Old ideologies have resurfaced, and some entirely new have formed to fill the blanks left when the UN sought to equalize and harmonize all of humanity back on Old Earth in the name of 'peace through profit'. If ever there was a chance for a swift reunification of humanity then it has passed, for the UN to ever bring all the powers that now surround it back in to the fold then it would take centuries.

And so it raises the question: does the UN even deserve to hold such a title any longer? What is it the United Nations of exactly? Certainly not humanity nor Earth - seeing as it's gone. But with the terraforming of Pontianak and the huge drive to get people from The Bastion to the surface of the new world, there is at least more than one world, one nation under our control with more soon to come. Ironically enough the Jorarnrir system -the coveted place that started this war with the NAF- is now practically useless, now that we can terraform any world within UN space to suit our needs.
What's more we still use the map of Earth as our logo, plastering the image of our dead home on everything we can. Is it time the UN (or whatever it is to become next) to stop clinging to this old symbol, or is it vital that we retain a piece of who we once were, to honour and remember all those we left behind on Earth and in recognition that really, we are the true continuation of Earth and the progenitors from which all of human space has flourished.

Though with communications established with all (but one) of the Hegira states that have formed from the exodus from Earth there now comes the news of others even further beyond what we had considered 'human space'. Human colonies that have been cut off from us for a century and whose ties to Earth and her old cultures are strenuous or even entirely non-existent. Colonies with peoples that may have been altered by the ravages of space and alien worlds or have deliberately altered themselves to suit whatever hellish landscapes they found themselves, and then there is of course any other alien species left to be encountered.

But this is a time of celebration, to be thankful we have made it this far, to remember and honour those we lost and to look forward to the future.
Whatever the galaxy throws at us next we will overcome.
The Bastion. Pontianak. Regulus City and Bellezhir stand united, striding into the 24th century.

Next update will probably take a little longer, as I need to do a little maintenance (mostly giving a few empires some techs to let them catch up a little as the UN has a signficant almost game-breaking lead), but also altering the names, civics and government types of a large number of empires. It was only while writing this update that I went into observe mode in 2300 and saw a plethora of new rogue-colonies from human states plus new alien races had spawned across the whole western half of the galaxy between 2285 and 2300. Hence my decision to start mentoning them so much with the discovery of the last (but one) hegira states at the edge of the first big coloinal push at the start of the 23rd century.

I may also do a summary post of the 23rd century; whose who and what's happened in as simple way possible.

Oh wow that is a great and amazing writeup! The war goes well! At least on a small scale. The NAF has been driven back from their assaults on UN territory and some small border systems have been secured.

There seems only minor risks for the coming months of incursions beyond small raiding groups. Can captured/surrendered starbases be upgraded at all or are they automatically destroyed and you have the option of building new ones? Or it not really worth i to do so given the territory and the resources it would take?

And hope relations with the newly discovered star empires go well..

Public statement from the Board of Directors on the initiation of the Omaha Habitability Advancement Initiative (OHAI):

We are pleased to report that Tarsus Light Manufacturing is doing better than ever, thanks to our heavy involvement in the supply-chains of the terraforming-projects of Pontianak and, now, Omaha.

Our company has, at this point in time, supplied several megatonnes of the high-quality machined parts necessary to keep the multitudes of vehicles, drones, and permanent installations necessary for successful terraforming running at peak efficiency and reliability, and we stand ready to supply as many more megatonnes as are needed to ensure a safe, free, and planetside future for all UN citizens.

In terms of flora, assuming they weren't destroyed in WW3, the Scandies probably stole the seed bank in Svalbard when we weren't looking; The one in the UK may or may not have been taken as well; and same with The one in Colorado. Any post WW3 ones would be under agri-corps and it may not be as comprehensive since they might only want to keep the ones with the best profit potential.

With animals, even if we had a DNA record, we probably don't have the tech to go from genes to organism yet i think (the Columbians might however).

It's possible preserved cell cultures might exist for microorganisms, though it'd likely not be comprehensive, but it'd be something in the possession of the pharma and agri/food corps.

Sword of the Lord
A summary post while I finsh off making adjustments and amendments to various things in the save.
The 23rd Century: A retrospective and summary

Pre 2200
- At some point in the mid 21st century StellarX lands the first man on the Mars. It attempts a permanent colony but fails. It later attempts to terraform Mars but also fails.
- At some point the late 21st century World War Three breaks out, the cause of which and who was on what side has been lost to time. It almost became a nuclear war that would have destroyed the human race before a cabal of corporations from all sides of the war worked together to paralyse their own governments and initiated a takeover of the United Nations, forcing an end to the war using three prototype space vessels it had gained control of.
-The 22nd century was known as the Corporate-Era, with all nationstates dissolved and corporate-owned city states now making up the world. The UN had become a figurehead government with a symbolic Secretary-General but all power lay in the hands of the five conglomerates that had taken their place in the UN Security Council. It was a period of extreme economic disparities and environmental damage, but also of technological stagnation as none of the corporations wanted to destabilize the status quo and disturb the stranglehold they had gained over society.
-In 2174 Yellowstone erupts. The shockwave is rumoured to have been felt as far away as Hokkaido. Ash from the eruption blankets the atmosphere for two years and heavily affects global crop rates. The western half of the North American continent becomes almost uninhabitable and tens of millions are forced to live in vast tent cities across the Midwest. It is soon learnt that Yellowstone is just the first of many such disasters to come that will increase in frequency until Earth itself is torn apart.
-In 2190 StellarX conducted the first successful faster than light experiment by sending a probe to Alpha Centauri.
-In 2200 an emergency UN summit reveals to the public and world at large that Yellowstone was not an isolated incident, that a solution to the problem is impossible and that mankind has less then fifty years to get off of Earth.

2200

James Gray becomes the Secretary-General of the United Nations and heads efforts to discover a new planet outside of the Solar System that mankind can relocate to. The three prototype space-capable warships are sent separate decade-long expeditions to nearby stars to locate Earth-likes. Four science vessels soon follow to investigate any finds further. A large exploration cruiser is also constructed and sent far away from Earth in hope of finding a new home even further afield.
WIth the UN's nuclear deterrent absent, many of the minor corporations attempt to make their own way off of Earth, having little to no trust in the Security Council to solve the situation. A period which will become known as the 'Hegira'.

2201 - China - a group of oligarchs with supposed lineages that stretch back to leaders of both communist and even imperial China relocate to New Yangtze and form the People's Imperial China.
2202 - Russia - Major corporate and military leaders in Moscow take most of the population of the city and surrounding cities and form The New Russian Order on New Moscow in the Metertia system. Unfortunately less than two decades later the Mertertia star would experience a cataclysmic solar event that would scorch all the planets in the system. Only a few Russians manage to get off of New Moscow in time, forming a dispersed Russian diaspora across space.
2203 - America - CEO of a Texan arms company takes as many of the displaced people of North America as he can with him to form The New American Federation on New Colorado in the Kietsulha system. The NAF being a hyper-nationalistic and militaristic version of pre-corporate America.
2204 - Britain - Britain.Inc departs from Earth with a grand armada of vessels which it later turns in to it's sole focus as it becomes the British Admiralty. It believes it's past glories can all be attributed to the grand navy old Britain once possessed and therefore The Fleet of this new Britain should be it's highest priority at all times.
2205 - A duo of African mining and oil megacorps depart to the Hon system which it finds rich with resources, however their head of security overthrows the corporate leadership and declares himself emperor of the United African Empire, a feudalistic space empire with many noble houses and knights spread out across the many fertile worlds of the UAE.
2206 - The world's formerly largest hydroponic corporation departs from Australia taking many people from the continent and surrounding islands. It has yet to be discovered / its fate is unknown.
2207 - A consortium of Scandinavian corporations depart from Aland Spaceport for the distant star of Wosuki. It forms the Scandinavian Union, an even more socialistic version of pre-corporate Nordic countries, and dedicated to peace.
2208 - Various high-ranking corporate families from Brazil leave for the Kleia system, forming a despotic noble republic. The families become princely houses and a grand prince leads the Serene Principality of Brazil, a slaving, jingoistic empire.
2209 - The four republic-corporations of the Visegrad Conglomerate (Poland/Czechia/Slovakia/Hungary) depart for the Eaile system, and form the Visegrad Alliance, a democratic power where all it's citizens appear to be connected to some kind of cyber network.
2210 - Three megacorps leave South America for the Alcegh system. They are quickly overthrown by their workers who create the Patria Grande, a stateless anarcho-syndicalist union of unions across three bountiful worlds. They are stand-offish and antagonistic to all that would threaten them or their freedom.
2211 - An Arabian construction company that had come to control the entire subcontinent departs for the Tiros system with many other oligarchs and descendants of pre-corporate princely houses to form the Federal Arabian Emirates, on the planet Medina which is endowed with an immense amount of resources. The Emirates becomes increasingly more theocratic and dogmatic as time goes on.
2212 - An Indian aerospace and defence company leaves for the Kinwock system, creating the Republic of New India, a neoliberal democracy which is very similar to pre-corporate-era India, just in space.
2213 - Europe's largest defence company departs from Germany and settles on the Nehanaora system extremely far from Earth. The company becomes the German Military Order, dedicated to maintaining peace and stability in a seemingly chaotic region of space.
2214 - A Japanese automobile and heavy manufacturing company departs for the Hhabban system. Enroute a revolution takes place on it's colony ship it arrives at its destination as a proletarian regime calling itself the Japanese Commonwealth.

As well as these fourteen major colonial efforts there were countless minor attempts by small groups or even just individuals to get off of Earth. Most of these did not get far, and many perished. Those that survived were forced to create new homes for themselves where they could; be it on makeshift asteroid bases, haphazard habitats or just living out their futures aboard their tiny ships. These peoples would later became known as Independents or 'Indies'

By 2220, the surrounding twenty or so star systems from Sol have been explored. No viable planet is found that humanity could relocate to - though may be made habitable with terraforming, but not a luxury the UN has with Earth about to destroy itself. UNSG James Gray is ousted from power for his perceived failure and Lauren Ericson becomes the new Secretary-General. Ericson prohibits anyone from departing from Sol without UN authorization and with the three warships back in orbit she can enforce that with nuclear strikes on any that disobey. Ericson puts into motion 'Project Elysium', a contingency plan devised by her predecessor in the event no new home could be found - instead one would have to be made. The project called for the construction of an immense orbital habitat over Earth that mankind would relocate to and then hopefully on to other worlds eventually.

Earth's condition rapidly deteriorated and the population began to sharply fall, as much of the human race as possible was relocated to central Asia in an immense shanty city known as Himalaya City, from which every single human was employed in some capacity in the construction of the new space habitat, or the supplying and feeding of it's workers.

12 years later, the culmination of eight billion humans working in unison expending every last resource the dying Earth has to give is realised as the space habitat is completed. Dubbed The Bastion, it is officially complete in 2232 and the process of relocating humanity from Earth begins.

February 8th 2239 the Earth finally destroys itself in a gargantuan explosion - and almost destroying The Bastion if not for the three warships that had been incorporated into its hull to act as defences that shot down any incoming debris from the fractured planet. 1.2 billion humans were still on the surface of Earth at the time of its demise, but 9 billion now called the habitat home.
https://i.imgur.com/hjSzW9H.mp4

Lauren Ericson resigns as Secretary-General following immense public backlash at not doing more to save the billion humans who perished on Earth. Felix Jackson takes her place.
Sol, Alpha Centauri, 61 Cygni and Delta Pavonis are deemed to be the four most critical systems to the United Nations as they contain the Bastion and the most viable Earth-likes for colonization. Priority becomes securing enough resources for the already overburdened Bastion, where a quite literal Lower and Upper class divide forms from the workers of the lower sections and the administrators and executives who lived in comparable luxury in the three upper-cities. Space-mining which had previously been confined to just the Solar system rapidly expands out to surrounding stars where the UN first learns of Independents living inside UN territory but outside of Bastion control.
At first just a nuisance these 'Indies' soon prove problematic for the UN and a hindrance to mining operations, UNSG Jackson's cold indifference to their suffering causing many to resort to piracy to get the food and supplies needed to survive. Which necessitates the creation of the United Nations Navy to counter them.

After following what was believed to be an alien signal that turned out to be a dead-end, former Secretary-General Ericson who had taken up command of a science vessel meets with the commander of a new foreign power and the first evidence of any other survivors of the destruction of Earth in the form of the Patria Grande.

Soon after contact is made with the Sovereign Mechanized, a collection of robots from an old freighter that miraculously gained sentience and formed their own society on the surface of a hostile planet. And then shortly after the Republic of Columbia is met, the former UN exploration cruiser once thought lost that took control of a planet and system rife with ancient alien technology, propelling themselves in to a post-scarcity utopia, populated by clones from the original crew of the ship.

SovMech ambassador to the Bastion______________________________The ancient floating alien city renamed to Aberdeen, capital of Columbia

With Patria Grande support the Independents inside UN space managed to unite and settle the planet Regulus IIIa, which they renamed Ares upon which was the immense Regulus City. UNSG Jackon's attitude to Independents had gone from indifferent to outright hostile, and with it sentiment across much of the Bastion - all the while a large number of Indies had managed to get aboard the Bastion, some simply seeking a better life, others with more malicious intent.

Jackson seeks to end the "Independent problem" once and for all with a nuclear strike on Regulus City, which would kill the vast majority of Independents and make the survivors too weak and scattered to resist UN control.
The Admiral of the United Nations Navy - Suzanne Pritchard - however refused to particpate in genocide and disobeyed the order, instead opting to strike the Regulus' space station and remove their ability to conduct operations against the UN.

The attack is a disaster and the UNN is wiped out entirely in orbit around the Regulus star near the station, sparking a period of unrest on the Bastion as pro and anti Independent sentiments reach a boiling point. A new United Nations fleet is quickly built and sent to blockade the Regulus' system instead, while the lower sections of the Bastion are griped with strife.

The UN meets a plethora of new powers that managed to get off of Earth. New American Federation who hold a strong grudge against the UN (as well as being the first humans to make contact with an alien species - the Grammich), an Indian democracy, a Japanese proletarian regime, an African empire with numerous Russian and American corporations under its control, the Arabian Emirates and lastly a powerful resurgent China that makes itself known to the UN with a personal visit from the Imperial Chairwoman.

During this the "Indian War on Communism'' between New India and the Japanese Commonwealth is concluded with the communist regime on Neo-Tokyo being toppled. New India's military withdraws after looting the new Japanese homeworld and prepares to initiate a number of schemes to leech funds and resources from the new puppet Japanese government in the guise of assisting them. Patria Grande steps in with a military-humanitarian relief effort, giving aid to the people of Neo-Tokyo and undermining the Indian-backed government until it is too weak to withstand a second revolution and the rebirth of a democratic communist Commonwealth, which joins Patria Grande in forming the Union of Socialist Systems. The Scandinavian Union joins a year later. New India begins an immense military build up in response.

The Federal Arabian Emirates undermine and antagonise the Republic of Columbia to the point of triggering a war between the two to either see Columbia remove the theocratic regime in favour or something democratic, or the Emirates conquer Columbia and force their religion on the floating city of Aberdeen.
China's western and southernmost provinces - New Sichuan and New Canton supported by the Emirates and Columbia respectively break away from the People's Imperium in a brief but bloody crisis. The New Canton Republic is retained by China but under new special administration while Sichuan defects to the FAE, causing China to declare war to reclaim their province and also seeking to dethrone the emirate princes.

Secretary-General Felix Jackson is removed from power by a bloodless coup and replaced with John Renaud who oversees a decisive clandestine operation to capture high-ranking Indie leaders in the lower sections of the Bastion and manages to negotiate an armistice with Regulus City. The new UNSG Renaud enacts the "Independent recognition Act" which recognizes Regulus City's right to exist and allows formerly Independent (now simply called Regulusi) citizens to live and work inside UN space - though they are still not afforded all the same rights as a UN citizen (what few they actually have).

At the next UN General Assembly (the 330th) UNSG Renaud after conferring with other corporate leaders on the Bastion decides to put the UN on an isolationist path in order to focus on internal development and the colonization of the worlds within UN space to finally unburden the Bastion of its population and supply issue.

The United Nations Interstellar Colonial Administration (UNICA) is established to oversee all colonial settler campaigns and planet terraforming projects.
Alpha Centauri IVa (Cardiff) and 61 Cygni IIIb (Pontianak) are settled by human colonizers in special contained environments while a new planetary-habitat is built in the Delta Pavonis system to aid in making the planets there livable.

StellarX science vessel commander Vance Blair discovers a "gaia-class" Earth-like planet deep at the southern tip of the Scandinavian Union's space which he named Nu-Xandar. The planet is twice the size of Earth but has comparable mass, atmosphere, hydropshere and magnetosphere. It quickly becomes the most sought-after world in all of known space with every power nearby making claims for the system it's within. It is too far from UN space for the United Nations to make any attempt at taking the system themselves.

In light of the conflict emerging all around it and unable to find any other humans as friendly to them as the UN, the Sovereign Mechanized offers to become a satellite of the UN. Giving material aid to the UN and personnel to the UNICA colonization efforts. UN explorers and NAF rangers both survey and build outposts in the area of space between them (UN: "Western Frontier", NAF: "Orion Bridge") which culminates in them both discovering the Jorarnrir system which has three Earth-like worlds that may make suitable new colonies.

Tensions rapidly escalate between the UN and New America as both sides refuse to back down. The UN begins expanding and updating it's military extensively, and it's dedicated Strike Force intended to deter Patria Grand attack is sent into the Jorarnir system to rid it of the hostile spaceborne aliens - and fails. Regulus City sensing the coming conflict between the UN and NAF and realising that if the Bastion falls then the NAF would almost certainly destroy them too, agrees to become a part of the UN. UN Citizens, Regulusi and SovMechs are all granted equal rights, support and aid finally granted to the fledgling Regulus City and the concept of "Indies" within UN space becomes an obsolete notion. Regulus workers and sailors quickly help with the construction and manning of the expanded United Nations Navy which bases itself in Alioth.

The UN discover a space-university on the other side of the Iguo Veil nebula near to Sol, and through them makes contact with it's second alien species (Seeh) in the form of a hideous but well-spoken (and in English no less) artist by the name of Chardin who has lived for eons and been witness to countless empires rise and fall across the galaxy and reveals the possible extent to how far humanity has spread in such a short amount of time.

UNSG John Renaud suffers a heart attack and the United Nations is left leaderless for a few weeks. The New American Federation has met the Serene Principality of Brazil (and their breakaway rebel group the Coalition of Brazil or "The Cobras"), immediately befriending the despotic slave empire and with them forming the Perseus Arm Treaty Organization - PATO. Feeling emboldened and with the UN in a moment of transition PATO declares war only hours after UNSG Cynthia Knotts is elected, to take the Jorarnir system, contain the UN and allow New America and Brazil unlimited access to the Orion Arm and all of the inner galaxy.

Despite initial fears of being overrun by NAF fleets, the UNN's new cruiser ships prove incredibly deadly and keep the more numerous New American vessels at bay. The UNN manages to push across the border and win a few battles against the NAF, capturing minor outposts before conducting the lengthy Mirachi Campaign to capture Alioth's counterpart fortress that holds down the New American side of the border.

UN meets its third alien species - the porcine like Zunguatese whose homeworld also befell calamity and their species enduring an exodus similar to humanity's though they do not seem as numerous. The UN makes contact with the German, British and Eastern European powers that formed from the Hegira, each of them existing at the edge of what is considered 'civilised' (or at the very least - centralized) space and beyond them apparently lies a chaotic and violent expanse.

UNICA successfully terraforms Pontianak, transforming it from an overbearing humid jungle planet into something akin to Earth, funds and resources are allocated at once to begin terraforming more worlds and a colonization push to get people of the Bastion begins.

New India forces the British and a portion of the Russian diaspora to give them their resources, which goes straight to toward the New Indian Navy as it commences what will probably be a long and costly war against the Union of Socialist Systems in the 'Second Indian War on Communism'

15 years into the 'War of the Western Frontier' even with a number of UN victories the NAF shows no signs of backing down, it's fleets absent from the frontline for more than a year while it almost certainly conducts upgrades to face the UN Navy.

The UN finds itself in a comfortable position going into the 24th century, with the ability to terraform worlds realised and the war going in their favor even if the end may seem far off.

The 5 most powerful conglomerates of the United Nations that make up the security council.
Congo - founded just prior to the 21st century as a novel online kitchenware delivery service it quickly expanded to every market and product and service imaginable, becoming the world's most powerful corporation half a century later. Lost some of it's power and prestige during WW3, but seems to be seeking it once again with it's semi-independent operations from UN control.
Standard Dynamics - Formed in the decade prior to WW3 from the merging of most of Earth's western hemisphere defence companies. Produces anything mechanical, from handheld terminals to astromobiles to space-capable cruisers.
StellarX - Created in the early 21st century, this rocketry and space-based company quickly overtook the space agencies of most nationstates, creating state of the art rockets and satellites. It controlled most of Earth's satellite's, communications and information infrastucture by the time of WW3. While StanDy has over-taken most of the ship and rocket manufacturing responsibilites, StellarX still creates many new designs for them to realise.
United Mining - formed from the merging of the world's largest oil / gas company and mining company before quickly absorbing all smaller companies it could. Controlled almost all of Earth's northern hemisphere resource extraction by 2200, now the UN's primary space mining company.
Superior Corporation - The galaxy's oldest continuously company, founded in the 17th century by royal French decree on the shore of Lake Superior as a fur trading company it survived to the modern era as a clothing giant and producing high quality consumer goods and eletronics.
Each of the five conglomerates also own or are partnered with dozens if not hundreds of smaller corporations covering every market.

Other misc terms
Upper - Someone from the upper four sections of The Bastion. Typically administrators, executives and other high-ranking corporate positions with a small number of lower-paid service workers.
Lower - Someone from the lower six sections of The Bastion. Almost universally working-class, agri-workers, technicians, engineers, dock, factory and foundry workers.
UNSG - United Nations Secretary-General - leader of the UN

Thanks for the recap.

Do we know what civics the other empires are running? I'm curious as to whether Patria Grande is actually running Shared Burdens or if they're not that committed to equality in practice.

Amended with civics of all major powers.

Also here is also a ranking of all powers in the galaxy in 2300 (with undiscovered hidden), just to show you the scale of what lies beyond the Victorious Night / Voiceless Nightmare nebulas that have shielded the eastern half of the milky way.

at this stage of human warring settlements this is starting to look like a crusader kings game, without the option to marry your daughter off to end a rivalry.

I wouldn't have guessed how much power we have based purely on the narration thus far and the string of dismal military failures up until the recent NAF conflict.

Is the military power score an accurate reflection of capability or is it one of those things that can be fudged if the faction has eleventy-billion obsolete corvettes?

There don't seem to be a lot of immediate -hostiles- towards the UN (Well other than the current war of course). Economically the UN seems reasonably stable, expanding, with fairly secure borders.

Thanks to captured systems looks like there's a good buffer zone to build up more defenses in for the coming counter-attacks, though probably little more room for offenses on this end.

Looking forwards to the next bits of the story!

After mousing over the 1778 power number for the UN in the outliner, it is almost certainly because of the UN's huge technological lead. Which should hopefully be fixed a little when I unpause, after going around giving all the major powers a bunch of techs.

UN tech level: 3636
next nearest is Columbia at 2785
The NAF is only at 1546

edit: the UNN did also jump from about 1200 power to 7000 when I dumped everything into alloys in the market to expand the fleet.

Lore-wise, I like to think it's because of the much larger initial population. The ships that took off during the Hegira didn't carry billions.

Also possibly that the corps that left were limited in their R&D and tech capabilities due to limitations from being speicalized corps or not having enough resources with them to do so when they left while the Bastion retained a diverse mix of everything at the cost of initially being packed in a tin can

Both added together makes for a fairly strong case for why we managed to keep the tech lead over the others, low pops and only certain specializations probably inhibited the others. That said our big size does probably leave us vulnerable to espionage, plus with more people are more opportunities for techs to leak. Also since the Hegira corps were specialized they might have continued down their own technological competencies and might have better techs in certain areas, and on top of that all, most of them could have come across alien ruins like Columbia did to give themselves a possible leg up (possible in-lore reasons for the tech balancing Crisis Now mentioned they were doing).

LOL. Well, at least we're still #1. I think a major question in the war with the NAFties is gonna be whether we can goad them into a major fleet action near a starbase or vice versa. A starbase with defensive platform's is sitting at what, 3k fleet power right now?

e: Also, yeah, the crash military construction program begun after we got thumped by space amoebas is paying off right now.
