Sword of the Lord

"last one to die turn off the lights"

It's 2200 and Earth is doomed!

Exodus
Stellaris has a new DLC - Nemesis which has brought me back to the game after not touching it for two years. Now I'm playing it obsessively and figured now's the time to try another Paradox Let's Play.
Just as with my previous LPs this will be very narrative-focused with occasional votes for important decisions, though input along the way is always welcome.
I've also never actually played a game of Stellaris all the way through to completion - so hopefully this'll be the one.

The Setup
Earth's days are numbered.

35 - 45 years after the start of the game, the Earth will literally explode, and everyone and everything on it will be gone, not unless we can find a new home for humanity. But it may not be a wholly unified effort, as other powers from Earth will also be fleeing the planet and trying to shake off our authority.

What's more, there will be zero alien empires presents in the galaxy at the game start. No Fallen Empires nor Marauders either, Earth is alone in the Milky Way, but that won't last for long.

Earth of 2200 is a corporate hellscape united under the banner of a figurehead United Nations staffed by executives and moguls who keep world peace not for the bettermeant of mankind but because it's profitable. Nation-states have become irrelevant over the past century, but cultural and ethnic ties run deep and chaff under the homogenizing streamlined grip of the UN.

Mods?
Oh you bet, 40gb of mods in fact! Mostly purely cosmetic, but some key ones that greatly alter the game.
Plantery Diversity and Real Space and Guilli's Planet Modifers. Which adds new planet types (both habitable and inhabitable) and modifiers, star classes and new cosmic entities for more variety. As well as using the Real Space sub-mods Real Scale and Real Space - Ships in Scaling Hard which both increases the size of systems as well as slow down ship speeds (at least with base 2200 technology) which slows down expansion at the start of the game dramatically and requires greater consideration for where you station your fleets if it can take years to reach your borders. Wild Space makes areas of the galaxy uncolonizable but still explorable, mostly nebula and the core and fringes of the galaxy. And just generally a whole slew of mods that add to or enhance almost every aspect of the game, from civics, events, decisions, AI and buildables.

The key mod however will be - Fatherland: Colonial Empires - which dynamically spawns "rogue colonies" of various types (overzealous explorers / persecuted minorities / oppotunistic corporations) at the edge of your empire, but also has a sub-option if you're playing the Doomsday origin (and especially if you're Earth) where the colonies are now from minor nation-states of your doomed world. What's more each of those newly created colonies, can themselves spawn further colonies, and so on.

If there's enough interest I'll make a collection of the modset and post the mod order to get it all half-way working. edit: In fact here is the mod set

Sword of the Lord
2200 - 2205

For decades the unstable and seemingly inevitable fate of the Earth had been known to a select few in the upper echelons of corporate-society, though the knowledge kept secret from the public at large for fear of causing a panic or economic crash. Those fears were realized however with the eruption of Yellowstone in 2174 and the subsequent displacing of millions and a humanitarian crisis the likes of which the world hadn't seen since the end of WW3 a century earlier. Countless emergency summits were held by the UN of how best to deal with the ongoing situation that saw a large swath of the North American continent rendered uninhabitable, but these (intentionally) surmounted to very little. But as the 23rd century dawned greater and more damning information was leaked of the dire circumstances the planet was in. Until ultimately it was private scientific endeavours conducted by vestigial nationalistic-corporations that truely brought the situation to light. There would be more events like the Great Eruption of '74, more earthquakes, more tsunamis and storms that would strip the land bare as the planet rips itself apart. There was only one generation left before Earth - and humanity with it would be wiped out.

Pandemonium beset many of the city-states just as had been predicted by the executives of the UN, who tried their best to downplay the situation or highlight the benefits this was going to bring. Scott Masterson, CEO of United Mining - pioneer of dangerous and controversial deep-core nuclear-blast mining was anything but dismayed and only spoke of the opportunities this will bring. Despite a momentary dip in the price of United Mining stocks and public backlash it was quickly concluded by an internal commission that mining conglomerates had only contributed minimally to the condition of Earth, and that this was all an inevitably anyway.

It is both convenient and a nuisance then for the UN that in the decade just gone successful faster-than-light travel had been achieved with FTL-probes reaching Alpha Centauri, the design quickly scaled up to fit on larger vessels capable of carrying astronauts. StellarX had licensed the manufacturing rights for this new FTL engine to a wide range of companies, hoping to stimulate the resource exploitation of the nearby systems. But all across Europe and Asia nationalistic-corporations had other ideas, there was wide-reaching talk of sedition, of forming their own expeditions outside of UN authority, of even reforming old nation-states that had fallen to the wayside after WW3.

Three of the five conglomerates forming the Security Council were furious, demanding immedite punitive action against these rouge corporations and their dangerous nationalistic desires but were vetoed by Congo and SinoTec for fear of disrupting their business. But still, the United Nations spaceborne "navy" (a grandiose term for merely three vessels) was reactivated and it's full use granted to Secretary-general James Gray.
The Dauntless, The Virginia and The Archangelsk were holdovers from WW3, seized by corporate powers and used in the takeover and eventual restructuring of Earth's society. These space-capable nuclear-armed vessels were antiquated, cumbersome and expensive but they fulfilled their job of keeping the new order in power. Gray was unwilling to use them against seditious cities in Eurasia for he had other plans for these three ancient war machines.

The FTL-probes that reached Alpha Centauri returned with confirmation of exo-planets, some even Earth-like in nature. And so the Secretary-general began an operation to locate a new possible home for humanity.
Interest in space exploration and exploitation had fallen greatly through the 22nd century, reconstruction and restructuring of Earth was the main concern this was coupled with the still lingering failures to terraform Mars and the trillions of dollars wasted, and the less said about the horrors of the doomed Minktown colony the better from centuries bygone.
Alpha Centauri IV and her moon Alpha Centauri IVa may be humanity's only hope.

The Magellan had previously been used to survey the Solar System and aid in what minimal mining activities were conducted in the Asteroid Belt, but now it was outfitted with the new FTL-engines and crewed with some of the best and brightest scientists StellarX had to offer and led by Professor Gail Stevens (with additional survey teams provided by Congo and United Mining for assessing the monetary and mineral gains that could be had in this new system).
Their main goal was to travel to Alpha Centauri and further analyse these Earth-like planets and their potential for rehoming humanity.

What's more the three ships of the UN-Navy were outfitted with their own special sensors that would allow them to scout out ahead their own systems. These ships lacked the room and facilities to house the scientific equipment and crew the Magellan had been granted, but they could at the very least identify Earth-likes for further study down the line.

The Dauntless, The Virginia and The Archangelsk were reclassified as "Civil-military exploration" units and sent to Sigma Draconis, Barnard's Star and Sirius respectively.
While the recent FTL-innovation was groundbreaking it required vessels to be at the edge of systems to be outside the influence of the star's gravity well. Existing chemical-based thrusters were practically unchanged from the very same that carried man to the Moon and Mars, and so ironically UN vessels could hop form one star to another in just a day or two, but first it took them almost a year to travel to the edge of the system on antiquated but cheap thrusters.
This was to be no mere jaunt to other systems, and the crews involved knew all too well this was to be a multiple year's long endeavour before they would see Earth again. But the fate of the human race and the spirit of discovery drove them and the expeditions left from Earth with much vigor.

Secretary-General Gray was at the same time heading a special council overseeing alternative contingency plans in the event no suitable planet can be found in time.
The construction of an orbital habitat large enough to house most of humanity, that would provide most of the luxuries and amenities Earth once provided but would merely be a stopgap on relocation.
Or even more ambitious, the creation of a great ark, an immense vessel that will hold billions of cryopods and carry humanity for as long as was needed until a new home was found.
Either project would be one of the largest endeavours undertaken by the human race -not that trying to relocate Earth's population to another planet wasn't already, but these would require all the corporate-entities of Earth working in unison and likely deplete every resource Earth had left to give.

In mid 2200 Standard-Dynamics had come forth with a proposal for a brand new vessel designed specially for the exploration and surveying of new star systems so the UN would not have to rely on repurposing and reusing old assets, and work began at once on this oversized heavily armed and armoured ship but also well equipped and to staffed by almost ten thousand people.

By the time 2201 rolls around, the exodus has begun as a handful of large vessels depart from the eastern coast of Eurasia, after leaks that SinoTec's deep space telescopes found what they believed to be another Earth-like planet in a far off system. Allegations are quickly levelled at the Chinese megacorp for allowing or even assisting in this colonization effort, but being on the security council they quickly shutdown these accusations. Sanctions are placed on the minor Chinese corps that defied UN-mandates, though it means very little, as haphazardly constructed colony ships are already leaving China in the hundreds.

April 28th 2201, The Virginia arrives in the Barnard's Star system and immediately it's scanners go off, alerting the Civil-Military Gamma expedition that they are not alone in the system.

Captain Sienna Colt brings The Virginia up to battlestations, believing it may be a rouge Chinese ship, but it quickly becomes apparent the foreign object detected is not of human origin, it is not even a vessel of any sort but a living alien entity.

The confirmation of alien life from The Virginia is cause for much excitement and uneasiness from the scientific and military establishment back on Earth.
This was not a foreseen possibility. Throughout the 22nd and 21st centuries despite the best efforts of SETI no evidence of alien life could be established and it was quickly decided that humanity must be alone in the galaxy. The 'Barnard's Star Encounter' has turned that notion entirely on it's head, and were this under any other circumstance would be cause for much jubilation on Earth. But the fate of Earth lies in the balance and this entity may belong to a greater collective that may impede the UN's efforts to find a new safe haven.

Alternatively, it could aid us. Until it's motives and true nature can be ascertained and formal communications established, The Virginia is advised to use caution, while special envoy Matthew Beauclark of the UN Diplomatic Corps heads the team trying to establish contact with this entity.

Meanwhile the Alpha and Beta Civil-Military exploration ships have arrived in Sirius and Sigma Draconis and find them to be barren systems, with planets that are either scorching or freezing and devoid of atmospheres, they carry on to Procyon and Chi Draconis.

The Virginia approaches the alien entity, all attempts to establish communications with the entity on all available radio frequencies go unanswered, until finally visual contact is made and the true scale of the 'creature', in Captain Colt's words, is revealed.

It should be noted that the three vessels that make up the UN-Navy are each the size of a football stadium, so this entity is truly gargantuan. It does not respond to or even really seem concerned at The Virginia's presence, merely making slight adjustments to it's slow ambling drift through space if the UN vessel should ever stop in its path. It dips into the upper atmosphere of Barnard's Star III - a gas giant, and The Virginia keeps up as best it can.

The entity is finally given a name by the UN scientific-envoy team, 'Tiyanki', it is deemed to not be an intelligent being, more a wild animal. It is docile and almost entirely harmless, the Virginia is ordered to ignore it and carry on with its mission at once and departs for the Altair System.

Despite the best efforts of UN counter-intelligence agents, the leaked SinoTec star charts managed to find their way to Moscow and on the 18th January 2202 three well-stocked generation ships departed from the Baikonur Cosmodrome for three different star systems many hundreds of light years away from Sol.

It is quickly becoming a point of contention and embarrassment that minor corps are managing to out-perform and out-manoeuvre the conglomerates of the security council.
A new scientific initiative is quickly established to expand the deep-space telescopes in orbit around Earth and for more thorough expeditions to the nearby stellar bodies, lest the UN falls behind it's constituent corporations.

There is division in the UN security council as one of its own members - StellarX publicly endorses and even assists in the American effort to establish its own colonies outside UN jurisdiction. Secretary-General Gray, himself once on the StellarX board of executives is hard pressed to denounce his own former conglomerate and the dangerous, hysterical rhetoric espoused by President-executive Bloom of Texas-Mechanization-Systems (TexMechS), of a renewed America with a perpetual frontier among the stars. A state of the art Standard-Dynamics colony ship departs from Florida. With almost a third of Americans stuck residing in the great tent cities of the Midwest after the eruption of Yellowstone, and with the imminent destruction of Earth they follow Bloom eagerly in droves with promises of a new better life on another world.

With dissent in the UN's own heartland, the floodgates are soon opened and even insignificant powers like the republicompany of Britain.Inc are able to field their own colonial efforts.

As the UN Magellan approaches the two Earth-like planets located in Alpha Centauri it begins minor surveys of other planets orbiting Rigil Kentaurus -
On 'Alpha Centauri-V', there is trace evidence of life located, but the life itself is no where to be seen, and how exactly it survives remains a mystery as while Alpha Centauri-V does have an atmosphere it is a thick radioactive toxic soup near enough identical to that of Venus, and the science team can spend little more than an hour on the surface before their suits beginning to melt and they must retreated to the Magellan.

And on Alpha Centauri-IIa and much more remarkable and groundbreaking discovery is head. There is intelligent life in the galaxy besides humanity, or at least, there was once, eons ago. A great interstellar empire which Professor Stevens has come to call the Irrasian Concordant. She becomes infatuated with these 'Irrasians' and the notion they may have interacted with or influenced ancient humanity seeing as they existed just one star system away from Sol. And under different circumstances the security council would allow the Professor to indulge herself more with these expeditions to the planet's surface to gather more material and artefacts, but the urgency of her mission is repeated time and time again in transmissions from UNHQ in New York, and the Magellan continues on it's critical assignment.

UN-America ground forces from the still loyal North-East-Megalopolis occupy the industrial wastelands of Texas, ceasing what remaining TexMechS operations continue on Earth after the American-exodus, and force Standard-Dynamics to complete the exploration-cruiser for UN use, as it had been shirking it's responsibilities and instead constructing colony-capable ships for other corps.

The UN Columbia is an impressive vessel indeed. The second largest space vessel only to the TexMechS colony-ship from the previous year, capable of venturing out into the void indefinitely and act as a self-sustaining science platform - surveying planets, conducting its own science expeditions and if need be, engaging and defending itself from hostiles.
It is sent on the furthest expedition yet, to study the nearest blackhole to Earth and to report back any signs of Earth-likes on it's journey.

The Magellan reaches the two Earth-likes of Alpha Centauri, landing on the largest one and Professor Stevens steps on the surface of what could become humanity's new home.
The average temperature is almost unbearably high. The science team can only work without their helmets / respiratory aid for a few hours before needing to don them once again. The air is humid, dry, unpleasant. Vegetation is sparse.
One member of the science team described Alpha Centauri IV in their journal as 'The worst day you'd experience in Arizona, but it's everyday, and stretched across an entire planet"
What's more the intense heat gives rise to constant erratic storms that arrive almost like clockwork every other day, that relinquish little to no rain but bombard the surface with lightning and wreak havoc with electrical systems.
'New Phoenix' as it became known, lied at the very fringe of what could be classed as a habitable planet, humanity could, technically, live here. But it would not be a happy prosperous future.

After a month the Magellan departs again, with the science team having little desire to set foot on the planet again and though New Phoenix seemed a bust, there was still high hope for Alpha Centauri IVa which from orbit even looked like Earth.

The Magellan makes a hard landing on the surface of AC-IVa, the gravity is far higher than expected despite the planet being smaller than Earth - more the size of Mars, but seemingly much denser.
The crew and science team's spirits are soon dragged down just like their ship upon exiting and being greeted with the bleak landscape before them. Windswept and bitterly cold, constant grey skies not to mention the high gravity made movement difficult and carrying / moving objects even harder. After a month on the planet the explorers had only just began to adjust to the high gravity, a few already having to seclude themselves to the ship and it's marginally more agreeable conditions. The air was perfectly breathable, but there was little life to be found with one exception - mushrooms. Beyond the hills that The Magellan landed in immense mushroom forests were found, towering in to the sky as tall as buildings.
It was certainly more habitable than New Phoenix, but just as on that planet, a future lived out here seemed bleak and miserable. A crew member dubbed the planet 'New Cardiff'.
Professor Gail Stevens began at once investigating these abundant mushrooms further.

A month was spent on the surface of New Cardiff just as with the other planet, Professor Stevens concluded the mushrooms were non-hazardous, edible even, and should humanity settle here the immense forests could possibly provide ample food for new settlers.

It is new year's 2205, and back in New York transmissions from The Magellan are not well received, news of a terrible planet, and a not-so-terrible planet lying in Alpha Centauri. Discussions and debate between the five security council conglomerates arise over whether either New Phoenix or New Cardiff were truly viable planets for the relocation of humanity and a forlorn air hangs over UNHQ. But with news of multiple colonial expeditions departing from Cape Town, Abuja and Kinshasa to stars unknown, as well as the unknown fate of Chinese / Russian / American / British endeavours the notion was beginning to be asked of whether the UN was even trying to save humanity at this point, or simply hoping to maintain control over the quickly forming diaspora.

Feeling the tug of Stellaris myself after several years not playing, so glad to see all these LPs popping up to investigate whether or not it's worth getting back into. Here's hoping humanity finds at least a halfway decent home somewhere.

District Overhaul 2, which is not fully updated for 3.0, there's a test branch i'm using which seems to be working just fine though.

The solar array seem to give the exact same amount of energy as the generator district, it just costs alloys rather than minerals to construct. (which doesn't seem great)
A more useful example is the Ocean Farm to the right of regular Agriculture Districts. Which provides extra food, a little society research but costs 3 energy rather than 1 to maintain.

This LP looks cool, and I'll definitely be following it.

What mod allows for the bigger event text? Is there a similar mod for bigger First Contact/Archaeological dig text as well? I would like to read events sometimes, but the tiny text just makes my eyes glaze over.

From memory, pre 3.0 Solar arrays generated slightly more energy with slightly less jobs than an equivalent generator district.

Looks to me like the main use case would be to surpass the regular energy district cap by paying a premium via alloys rather than minerals.

Kurogane, probably the best, certainly most detailed, most vaired shipset there is for Stellaris. The downside is it's 1.8gb
These are all the ship-types you can build for corvette alone, which I'll certainly be trying to make use of.

2205 - 2215

Locating a new viable home for humanity has of course been the upmost priority the past few years, but with evidence of life existing on planets previously thought inhospitable scientists on Earth implore the Secretary-General to begin expeditions to more of these near-Earth-like planets, if discoveries can be made as to how life has survived on these harsh worlds it may aid humanity in whatever place they resettle.

Civil-Military Exploration units Beta and Gamma are now dozens of lightyears from Earth, both having detected new planets each in the Regulus and Sabik systems.

Images obtained of these two planets however are not promising as neither look particularly Earth-like, or at the very least don't seem compatible with human life.

Beta makes another jump and discovers a third planet in Aldebaran, but again it does not seem a likely candidate for relocation. There is an atmosphere, there's visible ground water, but seemingly no vegetation from what the images reveal.

Gamma likewise makes another jump in the opposite direction and detects more planets, and picks up readings of a large structure of some sort.

The two planets may very well have been habitable at one point, there is even scant evidence of structures on the surface. But there are also craters, many craters, and each one giving off intense radiation readings. Both these planets have been scorched by nuclear war.

And the large structure detected is little more than a ruin, a dilapidated sensor array of some sort judging from it's large number of antennas and dishes. It is likely a remnant of this Irrasian Concordant that Professor Stevens discovered.

The three naval vessels have done as much as they can and they have been away from Earth for five years now. They are not equipped like the science vessel for these long-range expeditions and likely need major repairs and the crew undoubtedly wish to return home to their families, for however much longer that may be.

Crude exoskeletons used by soldiers in WW3 are repurposed and updated for civilian use with new designs being implemented based on them.
If New Cardiff with it's high gravity is to ever be colonized, these may prove invaluable for assisting settlers. But the thought of being forever-reliant on powered-mechanical limbs is not a reassuring one, and the long-term effects it will have on the physiology of humans living on the planet don't bear thinking about.
What's more research into robotics and AI is resumed after many decades of it being heavily restricted or in some cases outright banned ever since the Algorithm-revolution and collapse of the first internet in the 21st century.
Automated drones and mechanized production lines have of course been a part of Earth's industry for centuries now but humanoid robots have always been a taboo. But these are desperate times and every avenue must be explored if the UN is to survive.

With the three UN-Navy vessels on their way back to Earth and the limit of what these military ships are capable of reaching, three new science ships are commissioned at once.

By now Secretary-General Gray has stopped trying to halt the "Hegira" as it has come to be known. Small ships continue to leave; star-yachts, asteroid miners, station ferries all crammed full of people and overburdened with cargo and supplies leave from Earth in every direction, hoping to find anywhere livable - they probably won't even make it to the nearest stars.
In Australia Outback-Hydroponics.inc has funded it's own colonial venture, taking with them almost their entire company and operations (which is to say, almost a quarter of all Australians) and embarked on a long-range journey to settle the first start with a half-way habitable planet. Earth's food production is severely hampered by their departure, but UN-Oceania ground forces manage to claim what's left remaining and reverse-engineering of their technology beings at once, it will be needed on Earth and maybe on whatever other planet is hopefully eventually settled.

The UN Columbia draws closer to the blackhole a hundred or so lightyears away from Sol, it has detected strange signals coming from the system - which is to be expected from a system with a blackhole but these signals almost seem coordinated, as if something conscious is emitting them, but any attempts at inter-system imagery fail. What's more, on the way the Colubmia detects two new Earth-likes in Bellezir and Beta Caeli. But once again both these planets are atomic wastelands. Almost every planet in the systems around Sol it seems once housed intelligent life but destroyed itself in nuclear war. Some cynical scientists begin to believe perhaps being reduced to atomic ash is the fate of all civilisations and the imminent destruction of Earth is the cost of cheating death when the corporations took over the UN at the end of WW3 to avert our own nuclear catastrophe.

With the three new science-ships dubbed Newton, Einstein and Hawking completed they are sent out at once to the nearby star systems.

The various republicompanies of Scandinavia have banded together to fund a single colonial venture and departed from Aland Space Center on 7th September 2212.

Three new supervolcanoes have erupted in eastern Siberia, the Korean peninsular and the Andes Mountains. Tsunamis have struck the Japanese and Western American coast, swirling ash clouds cover much of the eastern hemisphere. Extreme media restrictions are put in place, the only thing that'll stop ceaseless global panic and delirium. United Mining and other resource conglomerates are seeing record production rates!

The Columbia enters the blackhole system and immediately every sensor, every alarm, every warning system the ship has goes off at maximum intensity, the ship's RCS thrusters are constantly active to keep the Columbia in place against the immense gravitational forces present in the system. There isn't just a blackhole here.

There's dozens.

We have the benefit of being able to resettle all our population after colonizing anywhere.
All these rouge colonies literally start at 1 pop and have to build up from that (though they do have lots of bonuses)

One thing I've found key to a Doomsday start is being able to keep as many pops on your homeworld as possible for as long as possible for those huge bonuses to mineral/alloy/energy production... and then ship them offworld right before everything goes boom. Make sure you have forced resettlement as an option before doing that, though.

Also, if you start emptying your Homeworld too soon and can't get everyone in one go the few remaining pops will have a crazy growth rate because of all the space. So you wind up with more pops to move.

note: going forward for the purposes of record-keeping and trying to figure out populations, a single human pop = 300 million people. So in 2200 Earth's population was 11.5 billion. By 2220 it has dropped to just under 6 billion.

UN Columbia
Captain's Journal
Captain Silas Mckinnon
StellarX Analysis and Research Division 'SARD'

September 15 2215
At 10:32AM UTC±00:00 the Columbia has at long last completed our three year journey and arrived in the theorized blackhole system. Only we have discovered there is not one one blackhole here but numerous orbiting one immense 'main' blackhole at the center of the system.
They rage silently in a frothing maelstrom of energy the likes of which we have never seen. Other members of the command team advise that we should turn back at once, but we have a mission to complete and we have spent three years travelling here. I will not have it be for naught. Concerns that the Columbia cannot handle the stresses being exerted by these blackholes have been assuaged by Chief Engineer Matthews This is the pride of her Standard-Dynamics, the most sophiscated ship made by human hands and nothing short of driving it directly into one of these blackholes would see it meet its demise. We press on deeper in to the system.

November 9th 2015
We are not alone in this system. The mysterious signal we picked up on route have now become three distinct signals, and they are moving independent of the blackholes' gravitational influence, seemingly capable of propelling themselves through space via means unknown. The command team speculate these may be vessels belonging to an alien empire so far advanced that we can barely even conceive them or how they are even operating.
After his success with the identification of the 'Tiyanki' aliens that Captain Colt encountered in Barnard's Star, Matthew Beauclerk had been assigned to the UN Columbia in the event we met any new aliens on our expedition, he will certainly have his work cut out for him trying to contact these beings.

UN Einstein
Captain Randolph Higgins

Pointing away from the galactic core and travelling away from Sol one will find themselves in the EZ Aquarii system, within the fringes of the Iguo Veil - an immense nebula that has fascinated and astonished man for millenia though with the advent of electricity and light pollution it's splendour has been lost for some time. The trinary stars of EZ Aquarii illuminate the dense (for space) dust particles of the Iguo Veil giving the entire system an ominous red hue, they are red dwarfs so the chance of finding a habitable planet here we extremely low at best, and from long-range observations all the planets and moons of this system are barren or molten.

EZ Aquarii II is an immense gas giant, nearly as big as Jupiter, with four relatively young moons orbiting it. The thin mantles of these four planets allow magma and rich ore depoisits to be constantly brought up to the surface, along with a high number of exotic resources we scarcely know about at this time.

To say the United Mining representative aboard the UN Einstein was overjoyed would be an understatement, plans are already being drawn up for a new space station in orbit of of the three EZ Aquarii stars and mining operations to commence as soon as possible on the moons of the gas giant.

___________________________________________________________

The the ongoing exodus of Earth is beginning to cause a severe brain-drain on the upper echelons of the UN's research and command structure, ever greater responsibility is being given to decision-making supercomputers and now more sophisticated AI is being developed to assist, not to mention the advantages that will come to processing the vast amount of data being transmitted back to Earth by the various science ships.

___________________________________________________________

UN Newton
Captain Marvin Little

Passing through Alpha Centauri and skirting along the edge of the Iguo Veil brings you to 61 Cygni, a vast system, maybe twice as large as our own, owing to it's binary stars - with 61 Cygni B making an immensely large and slow orbit of its parent star - both K type main sequence stars. Luck would have it that two Earth-likes are discovered orbiting 61 Cygni III a gas giant around the primary star.

The former looks similar to the planet detected by Civil-Military Exploration Beta in the Aldebaran system - atmosphere, water, but no sign of vegetation, the latter however seems more promising with what appears to be dense jungle covering most of its surface.

Despite the distance from the star the two Earth-likes seem capable of supporting life due to their parent planet. The gas giant 61 Cygni III is immensely hot - far greater than Jupiter or Saturn and could almost be classed as a brown dwarf which alone would not be enough to make nearby planets habitable but when combined with the main star's heat and energy puts them in the habitable zone.
However this the first planet, is not only devoid of vegetation it is almost entirely devoid of all life down to the molecular level, it is a sterile planet. The air here doesn't oxygenate blood, the water is not absorbed by the body and passes straight through. In actuality this planet is as barren as the Moon or Mercury, it would be easier to settle those worlds than to travel all this way to colonize an equally dead world.

In stark contrast the second planet is teeming with such an abundance of life it would take millenia to discover and categorize all that there is to be found here. The UN Newton skimmed over the canopy top of a jungle that seemingly stretched for thousands of miles covering every bit of land available to it, even down into the deepest valleys and scaling up the side of cliffs and mountains, it took us some time to find a suitable landing spot for the ship. Initial excitement of our discovery was quickly shot down unfortunately when we stepped off the ship and almost immediately our exo-suits became drenched in sweat and our visors fogged up, the heat and humidity of this planet is unlike anything we have experienced. One team member attempted to remove his helmet, but after just a minute of breathing the thick air he had to be evacuated back to the ship as his lungs had flooded with water.

Persistent perspiration owing to the heat and humidity requires near constant hydration lest one becomes lethargic and absent-minded. Science team members are quick to lose focus on their tasks and wish to only lay down and do as little as possible but complaing about the conditions inside their suits or at the ceaseless sounds of the wildlife around us.
The ancient trees taller than any found on earth are thick and spongy, applying even the smallest amount of pressure to the surface causes immense amounts of water to come streaming out. But of much, much, greater significance was the discovery inside these trees upon cutting one open. The most immaculate and purest crystals we had ever seen, likely owing to centuries of water being taken up by their host trees, ranging from the size of our fingers right upto the size of a human skull, one was so large it could not be cut free and possibly even formed the core of the tree itself.
With great difficulty and much cursing a few of the science team manage to wrangle some of the local wildlife and bring them back to The Newton so we may study how the local life has adapted to this environment, it is certainly not viable for humanity's relocation suffice to say. The crass team of mining conglomerate representatives back on the ship are already discussing how best to burn down this jungle so they could get to these crystals. Should we ever escape Earth and find our new home I would very much like to come back here before it is stripped bare.

UN Columbia
2nd June 2216

The three 'vessels' we had detected are anything but. The science team can barely even articulate what these things are, seemingly sentient clouds of dust and particles coalesced around a core of some ancient energy older than any star.
What's more these aren't blackholes that the Columbia is dancing around and slingshotting off, they are rifts in space and time, holes in reality itself, and what lies through them is anyone's guess.
The command team grow more uneasy with each passing day here and demand our swift exit from the system. But 'The Great Wound' sings the sweetest of songs, I must find its source.

UN Hawking
Captain Claire Briggs

Upon entering the Tau Cygni system the UN Hawking's sensors detected movement - multiple objects moving in a close formation, potentially a hostile fleet.

Initial communications heeded no response, but the entities were also not attempting to intercept us or were even aware of our presence until visual contact was made. Thought to be more 'Tiyanki' aliens until the Hawking drew closer and could confirm these were a new spaceborn species, which responded aggressively to our presence and emitted some kind of energy in a concentrated burst that narrowly avoided the ship.

New species classified as 'Space Amoeba'. Even larger than Tiyanki and exceedingly more aggressive, noted herd-like characteristics with smaller specimens. Advised to keep distance and not interfere. There is little else of note to be found in Tau Cygni and the UN Hawking is carrying on to UV Ceti.

This is Chief Engineer Jenna Matthews assuming command of the UN Columbia. Captain Mckinnon has been apprehended and sequestered to his quarters under armed guard.

Through exoduses and natural disasters the population of Earth continues to plummet. Corps and Republicompanies are using the last of the resources to field last ditch efforts to escape the planet with as many of their employees and their families as they can.
In 2218 the great Atlantic-Seawall built in the 2050s to combat the rising seas was destroyed by an earthquake, flooding much of the Northeast-Megalopolis. The UN headquarters is relocated to Kathmandu.

Outpost stations and very minor space habitats have been constructed in Alpha Centauri and EZ Aquarii as mining operations begins in both systemes, a few million people now live in these stations, but they too will perish when Earth goes if the UN cannot find a new home and source of food to feed them all.

___________________________________________________________

UN Magellan
Captain Gail Stevens

The Eta Cassiopeiae system has proved to be an invaluable source of information about the Irassian Concordat. Ruins of ancient space stations and solitary vessels litter this system with logs that offer ever great peeks into this empire that seemingly ruled this entire quadrant of space and all the Iguo Veil.

Eta Cassiopeiae I has the remains of what must have once been an immense ring that encircled the planet. There is little of it left and I suspect most of it crumbled from disrepair and eventually fell to Eta Cassiopeiae I, devastating the surface and turning it to the molten world it is today.

Eta Cassiopeiae I may have been one of the most important planets in the Concordant's final years as it would appear this orbital-ring was the center of their fight against the plague that wiped out their species. What little I can translate speaks of a great amount of resources being allocated to this ring and it's staff, but even this did little to help them. And eventually the disease itself spread here, this may very well be where the last Irassians met their demise.

It is possible with the right technology and with enough time, the eternal inferno that rages on the surface of Eta Cassiopeiae I may be extinguished, and the wealth of Irassian artefacts to be found would be immeasurable.

___________________________________________________________

In late 2219 the three vessels of the UN Navy return to the Philadelphia Station back in Sol after their long journeys, their findings reported out to the science vessels for more in depth analysis. The three dock at the station for repairs and restocking while the crews return to a very different Earth than the one they left, relieved at least to be able to see their families potentially for the last time.

UN Columbia
Captain Silas Mckinnon

After the indignity of being confined to my quarters (under armed guard no less!) for reasons I scarcely know nor any of my colleagues will divulge to me I am finally allowed to commandeer the Columbia again upon our entry to the Deecselfy system.
I feared that I would get to make no great discovery of my own like my colleagues in the other science vessels before all our time was up, but luck would have it that the system contains remnants of the 'Irassian Concordat' that Professor Stevens is so enamoured with, and on top of that two new Earth-likes.

As the Columbia approaches the two planets the ship's scanners pick up something on the surface of Deecselfy V, remnants of another species who never escaped their own world, barely progressing out of antiquity. We are surrounded by dead worlds littered with the ruins of peoples who came before us, we won't even have that luxury when Earth is gone. Will anyone even know we were here at all? I try not to dwell on the thought and keep the crew of the Columbia's morale high as we enter the orbit of the larger Earth-like.

The two planets (Deecselfy III with her moon Deecselfy IIIa) are remarkably similar. Both are rocky, craggy worlds with vast oceans and isolated continents and island chains where hardy vegetation clings to bitterly cold wind-swept shores that quickly climb to great highlands.
The larger planet has tremendous storms, so great in fact we feared the Columbia may become swamped by swelling waters after we parked her on the shore of an island. Chief Engineer Matthews herself was unsure of just how the engines would operate when submerged in water. I figured it wise not to test that notion and quickly ordered the Columbia to disembark and set course for the moon Deecselfy IIIa.

As the Columbia made its descent through the atmosphere the ship's scanners picked up something immense beneath us and we had to take evasive action at once to avoid a collision as we careened down through the sky blazing a fiery trial as we decelerated. Past the windows of the Columbia's bridge we saw it go past, a city. A giant floating city that was still held aloft in the heavens by some ancient technology. After coming to a rest a few hundred metres above the surface the Columbia reoriented and ascended back to this city. It was devoid of any life, but was almost immaculate, untarnished by time. There were specially built landing pads for space-craft (notably much larger than The Columbia) which we made use of and a number of teams explored the area close by.
This world was only barely more habitable than it's parent planet, this city itself could maybe be used to house a few million humans, but this place could carry risks we know nothing about and is going to require extensive investigation.

Standing on the edge of the landing pad and looking out across the horizon of jagged mountain tops and bleak yet beautiful heathland beneath, it reminds me of home, of Scotland.
It may already be gone. We are so far from Earth not even the Columbia's sophiscated comms can reach nor receive any messages.
If we should get back and find Earth and all the rest of humanity already destroyed, then I would like to return here and spend my final moments in this place.

___________________________________________________________

On the 4th January 2220, UN-Asia ground forces assisted by Congo.inc mercenaries seize Kathmandu from UN-America forces that had taken the city after the fall of the Northeast-Megalopolis and the old UNHQ in New York.
For his failure to locate a viable new home for humanity Secretary-General James Gray is ousted from power and in an emergency election Lauren Ericson (now also formerly of StellarX like her predecessor) has been appointed Secretary-General of the UN with full emergency powers granted to her.
With the UN Navy back in orbit around Earth Secretary-General Ericson promises an end to the 'Hegira', any ship leaving Earth will be seized by the Dauntless, Virginia or Arkhangelsk. Any that escape apprehension will be shot out of the sky.

There are no planets to settle that wouldn't require decades, maybe centuries of work to make habitable, or alternatively risk the loss of a large portion of the population by trying to live there in their current state.
Creating an ark ship and fleeing to another far off system may be futile as there are evidently none in local space, and any further afield may already be colonized by the rogue colonies that departed in the previous two decades. By the time a slow lumbering Ark Ship - carrying a billion or so people arrives, they may find themselves subject to an empire centuries old born from the old Earth.
There is therefore only one option left. The Elysium Project is initiated.
All corporations are now under the direct command of the Secretary-General and every person still remaining on Earth capable of working is to be put to work, a great space habitat will be constructed in orbit around Earth.

The southern edge of the Himalayas has become an immense shanty megacity as the last vestiges of humanity huddle and work tirelessly, using every last resource the Earth has to give in the construction of their new home. Colossal mining monsters tear the Himalayan mountains to shreds, while those that can't mine toil endlessly in the ash-covered canvased hydroponic farms. The seas rise day by day, bringing boiling acidic water from the south where the Indian subcontinent once sat while ships constantly soar through the black skies carrying finished sections and new workers to continue construction in space.
There is very little time left.
