On a related note, there's a similar controvery in Bristol right now. Up on the high ground in Clifton, close to the Avon Gorge, is a gorgeous 18th century shopping street full of pubs, coffee shops and specialist stores. It's one of the gems of Bristol. However, its gorgeousness is somewhat marred by 90% of the street being given over to traffic, with 2 lanes and parking on both sides of the street restricting pedestrians to narrow stretches of pavement less than 4 feet wide.

However, something is being done about this and plans are afoot to pedestrianise the street, giving the space back to people and allowing tables on the street, market stalls to be set up etc. Guess what the olds think of all this?

People are right to be scared of trees. I watched a documentary in which a bunch of trees sheltered some pot smoking short-arses before destroying the home of an elderly White man.

One of the things about living abroad for a few years is that it gives you some perspective on the country you grew up in. The biggest things that struck me about the UK after living in Germany were how lovely our drinking culture is, and how much this country loving despises its children. Just incredible amounts of fear and hatred.

I was going to say exactly this. Same with the pedestrianisation of Princess Vicky Street - people mingling, market stalls, cafe tables, local independent shops. Just like the Good Old Days!

But no, gotta be able to drive all the way from Redland(! - it's a half an hour walk!) to park right outside the import wine shop.

lol these are literally the same arguments residents around my area have against putting in a traffic-free ped and cycle route between the villages and towns. It would be such a boon because the road used to get between them is so dangerous but apparently if a cycle path was built then it would be way more dangerous and there would be drug dealers and parties and yoofs and children would feel unsafe.

Why not just turn the park into a municipal cannabis plantation? You don't get the shade issues of woodland and it's unlikely that anyone would try selling drugs there.

An acquaintance of mine moved to London for a few years a while back, he told me he didn't really know anyone in the city, so ended up just googling, and found some random dude on some random web forum that he was able to buy weed from. Like someone had their phone number there or some poo poo

I know it's been "practically legal" in the UK for a while, but googling "weed dealer phone number london" or whatever it was and that actually working is still a bit surprising

This protest is completely pointless as the road they have blocked off in the picture is one that practically no-one uses.

However, if the proposals are correct then it would actually seem a bit weird to close the road they are intending.

The Green line is the road the protestors have closed. The red line is the proposal by the council. The Green road has no parking anyway, so you have to walk to the restaurants there. The red line is pretty much the only way into the area without having to go considerably all the way around the houses.
