It's not modern graphics-wise, and it looks like a flash game from newgrounds but "Rusted Warfare" might scratch that itch.

Huh, this is a weird one. Apparently BBI is working on an RTS based on...Crossfire, which is basically a Korean Counterstrike clone. Sounds like there might be some gameplay this week.

The massive armies in Cossacks 3 are so cool but I always thought it would be so much better if the units were actually grouped into companies / battalions / whatever that would stay in formation and form proper battle lines. The battles would look much better and be more coherent, and would hopefully involve more strategy than just smashing two giant blobs into each other.

I know you can build officers and drummers etc. and sort of form units manually but then it becomes really micro-intensive again.

Gates of Hell just came out after 5 years of development.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/400750/Call_to_Arms__Gates_of_Hell_Ostfront/
It's a mod gone standalone game based on Men of War, however, due to licensing issue they are now releasing it as a DLC for Call to Arms.

It has campaign for both German and Soviet. The campaign is in the original Men of War's style (bespoke scenario instead of glorified frontline skirmish mode). A Conquest mode where you can slowly build up and upgrade your forces on a multi-map campaign. Both supports coop.

They also added a doctrine system for MP, basically like the hero unit in assault squad except each faction now has several different sets to choose from.

There's some more polish here and there (new infantry animation, new voice acting, new sound design..etc). Coop should be great fun. I didn't play enough during the beta to have an accurate impression for MP.

I'm fairly sure they said it would be standalone but I guess not.

It looks really cool but I read the AI was still really bad and they will only look into improving it "if the game sells well" aka they won't. I'll wait for a sale.

Call to Arms is.... uninspired as gently caress. Ive only played the first mission in Gates of Hell but it def feels better than the default CtA campaign which was as said, uninspired as gently caress.

I want a rebel campaign where the scenarios are like gathering the material to ambush a US checkpoint or convoy, then escape. Generic "kill all these enemies in town" stuff doesnt do it for me.

It takes a little bit of fiddling, mostly because you have to manually make an options file but shouldn't really be a problem.

I cannot recommend it unless you're super into that steam/dieselpunk stuff. If you remove the setting and wacky units, its just a sub-par company of heroes. The unit pathing in particular is bad. The lore/campaign is just a name-swapped eastern european interbellum war with not-poland, not-ussr, and not-germany.

I mean if you literally want C&C1 clones, the best of them is probably the original Dark Reign updated for modern OS. Otherwise there's always the sequel C&C games, your TibSuns and RA2s.

There's a bunch of tips for new players in the Steam guides section of the game and you can google some more guides on other websites/forums.

Basically, I'd recommend you start with Humans or Tarkans, as they're the most straightforward races in the game.

Some more early game/new player tips:
- Your research tree will be different every game, meaning that you will (or won't) have access to different avenues of research in each game. You can salvage tech from other AI's, but that's dependent on what they're using and unreliable.
- Every race not only has strenghts and weaknesses, but also using a different drive tech that changes the way they play. Humans use node lines that allow them to move fast, but in predictable paths, Tarkans can go anywhere, but have no special gimmick, Hivers move at sublight speed everywhere, but can teleport everywhere instantly once they deploy a Gateway, Liir get faster the further they are from a gravity well(stars), Morrigi get faster the more ships they have in a fleet and the Zuul use node paths like the Humans except they create their own (unstable) ones.
- First few turns focus on getting out some Tankers to explore(There's a dedicated scout ship, but don't bother, Tankers can move farther and serve the same purpose) You will lose them eventually, but they're easily replaceable. After that start making some colonizers once you've found some good colonization targets.
- Focus early game tech on some industry/colonization techs, you won't get attacked by neutrals until around turn 20. Start focusing on some weapons techs around that time, since you'll need them to get rid of the space bees. Laser techs(Red<Blue<Violet lasers) are the best against them. Research emitters if you get access to them. You can also freely colonize any easy/good climate worlds during this time.
- Don't fiddle with the sliders too much when you start out. I've never used them that much either even after becoming more familiar with the game. The only thing you should fiddle with is the pie chart in the top left, which allow you to allocate your money between ships production/research.
- Don't colonize systems with a single colonizer. You'll need 5+ ships for good climate world and ~10-20 for bad climate worlds. More colonizers = more population and startup infrastructure, which means it'll take less time for your new world to become profitable. There's no penalty for colonizing beyond the initial upkeep cost, so go hog wild and grab anything that seems good/strategic. Don't go too crazy though, because colonizing alot at once will make your economy stall out, which will affect your ability to build ships and research quickly.
- Initially you will be in a state of cold war with any other AI factions, you'll need to research their language in order to engage diplomatically with them. They wont neccesarily attack you in a cold war status, so if you don't attack they might reciprocate by doing the same. However this won't last forever, so try to establish communications quickly if you want to remain friendly.

Feel free to ask for more help if you need it, but I imagine the guides or a youtube tutorial would cover it. Here's a link to the Tech Tree, which will come in handy. The numbers next to the techs is the percentage chance you'll get access to the each game, different colored numbers for each race.

There is a difference between exploring with LR (long range) and tanker. For human, your range must be sufficient to finish a jump to be allowed to perform a jump. With tanker's short range you will not be able to explore down the longer lane until you upgrade your engine.

Other tips:
Having more than 1 million in the bank will slowly increase morale, at high morale you get a huge, binary income bonus from civilian population.

You start having a chance to finish research early at 50% research progress, so a strategy to save money is to quickly research to 50% then let it coast slowly while you use the money freed up to build more ship or increase your reserve.

Planet can build infrastructure up to 120% if the planet is not damaged for sometime (I think 10 turns). Infrastructure is a direct multiplier on planet resource value, which is converted to ship production speed or money.

Trade network can generate an obscene amount of money.
