I've always wanted to know what happened during the development of Thief 4. Just by looking at the finished project it's blatantly obvious that what we got is a kludged-together mess of restarts and concepts that didn't work out, but I've never been able to find any accounts that put together a timeline of what happened. Unlike, say, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Thief 4 was a lower profile entry in an older franchise in a niche genre, so no one's really taken the time to put together a proper postmortem.

the thing that stuck with me the most is that 95% of the levels are pure poo poo and then theres one that actually feels like a thief level and its at the very end and it was in all the gameplay demos

There’s places that are off-limits earlier on because you need a wrench or something. Can you actually go back there later or is it supposed to be NewGame+ type stuff?

This was one of my biggest gripes with the game. Regardless of how people felt about previous installments--whether it was the "steampunk" aesthetics or the giant spiders or burricks or zombies--at least those games tried to mix things up a little. Thi4f is so completely milquetoast. You spend the vast majority of your time sneaking past the same two enemy types in areas that look virtually identical. Even as I played the game, I found myself immediately forgetting details of areas I had just been in like some kind of brain damaged amnesiac.

As somebody who just played the game recently: I believe so, yeah. I'm not sure if there are any areas where you can never return, but most of the game is connected around the main "hub" area that you'll grow completely sick and tired of navigating before everything is over.

Seems to me that they’d probably been kicking around the old IP for a while half heartedly, then Dishonored came out and they figured it was as good a time to shove something out the door as any.

I think I’ve still got it installed so I’ll probably get back to it. I was dumb enough to pay full price for it sight unseen so it’s getting completed someday one way or another.

Thief 4 came out 9 months earlier than Dishonored, Thief 4 is a mess all its own.

Dishonored came out October of 2012, Thi4f was February of 2014. So it came out a year and a half later.

Yeah, okay, your description of it is entirely on-point. Fascinating. Not "I am going to play Thi4f" fascinating (I need to play the original trilogy still, I'd rather do that!), but, fascinating.

it feels more like an extremely anaemic DXHR with a bunch of half assed early 2010s AAA cliches. about a quarter of the game is lovely uncharted

I learned pretty early that you can just sprint past all the guards in the hub areas, which made them way less tedious

Somewhere like 1/3rd into Thief 4 it gives up having the hub do anything except have you run to the NPC next to the vendor and you've unlocked the shortcut so oh hey surprise a rino its just like 5 minutes of rote movement and loading screens

heretic also has more consistent levels, which yeah is due to it being a later game, but if you're comparing the two its worth noting

I don't know if Heretic is better than Doom 1, but it's better than Doom 2 for sure. Mostly because Doom 2 has about 2 or 3 good maps.

Can't think of any Raven games that aren't great except for Singularity - and even that is still good. A huge achievement considering how completely hosed the development for that game was.

Quake 4 isn't great and I've literally never heard of Necrodome until looking up their back catalog but that might be ok.

Hexen is one part great art design and atmosphere, and the other interminable switch hunts and confusing level design. I think I'd rather play almost any of their other games instead.

The Heretic maps are decent, they'd probably decent-er if they had more than 12 textures between them.

I wish Activision would get together with Bethesda and release Classic Unity ports of Heretic and Hexen.

Even though I've played with DOOM source ports on and off for the past twenty years, I got back into DOOM playing it on my Switch, on my couch, in a way that I haven't since the mid 90s. And we already have a Strife ported.

Ultimately, the problem is most likely that Doom (+2) stumbled over what is probably the best-calibrated weapon and enemy setups of the entire generation, and you'd have to do a lot of brilliant gameplay and map design to end up with something that is clearly “better” as a whole.

fine so far. they seem to be pretty much identical to the ones on the switch joy-cons so maybe these will also fail after a couple of years. the smaller size and rectangular shape of the device makes it a little less comfortable than the switch, although some sort of grip could help with that. i actually use the d-pad for movement and the right stick for aiming because that's more comfortable to me than using both sticks

quake 4 suffers from the era it was made in. it had vehicle segments and ai squadmates and long rear end half life 2 style 'immersive' cutscenes that you cant skip because every game at the time had that. the early part of the game is kinda weak but once you get set loose, and especially once you get stroggified, the game is a lot more fun.

it really frontloads the parts that suck

Cool thank you. I don't own a Switch but I've repaired a bunch of joycons and they're the reason I never got one but these Anbernic consoles are emulation machines and I'm sure that spare parts are also cheaper too.
