I stayed in Oxnard, I like it, but I also live on the beach and it's not the 90s so that probably helps

Fun fact about Mugu Rock, the Sailor from my outfit going to the brig for child porn charges did a suicide by driving in to the rock at 100+ MPH. Now as you know that road is pretty windy, so it's a testament to the stability, handling and acceleration of the 2014 Hyundai Sonata. Wow, what a vehicle!

Anime guy was a CS and did commit crimes against omelettes though.

Also I don’t know if I mentioned it here but i was struggling to get my DD214 and other paperwork and after a week or so I just called my congressman and got it the next day, gently caress Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and whoever the CO was I forgot already!

We had an old CS1 who had a pedo-stach and likened every meal he made to sex or jizz or something else totally foul, but he would make pretty good breakfast quesadillas so he was alright. A stellar sailor compared to the CS3 who poured mop water into the ventilation ducting to "clean" it and shorted out half the ships IC communications

Congrats! Hope you get to have some fun on the trip west, Mugu is awesome. I love this little backwater base, even if we have to deal with raccoons pissing in the ceiling every now and then.

The only person I've chatted with that didn't like Mugu said it was because of the weather (???) - that it was too "overcast all of the time". Meanwhile, we're standing in 90 degree/90% humidity Virginia swamp-rear end weather. Some people.

Hopefully, my new office is in better shape than the one I inherited at my old VFA squadron about eight years ago.

Carlsbad is really cool - if you think you can manage it try and catch the bat show at sunset. You can also hike out of the caverns right before dusk, iirc, but I'm not sure how plausible that's gonna be with 2 kids and a dog. Definitely a very cool national park with some excellent tours

It gets overcast? It's always been sunny whenever I'd drive through but I can picture it being "Coronado Overcast", meaning the marine layer rolls in.

That looks about the size of maint control for a fallon det. Of course my time in the Navy has taught me that that chair is very likely not in a VFA-103 space nor maint control.

LOL, I mean yeah, there are times when it's cloudy, but that's literally the worst the weather gets. My biggest complaint is that I kind of miss having different seasons rather than "blandly perfect year round", but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

That's mainly what it is, go a few miles inland and it's completely clear.

I've heard of people giving Mugu a bad rap if they go TAD there or something and don't have a car and are stuck on base all weekend. Which, fair enough, there's not a ton to do on base unless you want to hang out at the beach or the gym all day, but that's not really the best way to judge a place.

Posted this in the Cold War / AirPower thread but it’s relevant here.

quote:

So I read an op-ed today about the navy’s upcoming procurement crunch.

The gist of it is: Columbia class SSBN’s must be procured and there’s no if’s ands or buts about it.

At the same time the USN is working on it’s own Next Generation Air Dominance (Same name as the USAF but often referred to as F/A-XX) aircraft. Additionally our cruisers and destroyers are hoping to be replaced by a DD-X that’s focused much more on naval warfare. Finally, while the Virginia SSN’s are good boats and are capable especially given their price- they’re not the answer to future submarine warfare scenarios though, and an SSN-X is in the works too, likely to be more in the vein of the Seawolf class than Virginia.

Here’s the rub. With Columbia and it’s sister ships being locked in, the navy can pretty much afford only one of the above NGAD, DD-X, and SSN-X.

I feel like we can get the most bang for our buck with the new submarine or destroyers, but NGAD is a compelling program none the less.

Thoughts?

Surface will always lose because a sub without funding doesn't come back up, a plane without funding falls out of the sky, but a ship without funding still floats.

Also, is a generational leap in DDs what we need between minesweeping capability, Mark VI, and PCs all sunsetting?

Save the money, get people with pencils thinking about flight IV, get the submarine, and spend the price of one DDG to test and develop a couple of squadrons of missile fast attack craft with a Firescout sized helipad and associated tenders.

That should give us some short term adaptability in SUW, meet PC and Mk VI gap (except for the riverine role), and should manufacture faster than a DDGX would. Then shore up MCM. Then in five years, if some changes warrant a DDG redesign, approach the Arleigh Burke's successor.

Edit: I think we should wait for ffgx to prove some ideas before the new DDG design happens.

Chilling on the way to Guam because freight rates are so high companies are breaking steamships out and running them on diesel at 2-3x the cost of slow speed diesel vessels burning LSFO and still making buckets.

My chief doesn't really give a gently caress as long as I get the engine room cleaned up by China and don't do a lot of yelling and my 3rd is worried about running out of beer, he only got 4 cases of budweiser and I wouldn't loan him money to pick up two more in Hono. He has been promising me he won't run out of beer before China like the last two trips but I don't believe him. I think the chief is picking up cases just in case people do though. The 2nd drinks whiskey and had a full suitcase so I don't have to worry about him.

Edit: the last 1st got fired for shutting off the exhaust valve spring air before rolling the engine among other moments of incompetence so I don't have a high bar to clear.

Edit2: already changed out one main engine head cover stud underway so I'm set.
