I have, having replayed them too many ding dang times come around to liking the maps in Doom 1 more on the whole. Doom2 has better bestiary and weapons so its lucky Doom 2 had a ridiculous wad scene to make more maps and levels and have the strengths shine.

They're both good games and when I make top 10 lists in my head I cheat and treat them as one entry since Doom 2 can run the Doom 1 WAD.

Are there any projects that make Doom 1's maps Doom 2ier? Not a full redesign, something between that and just switching a few monsters and items out.

The Playstation Doom mod. The playstation version of Doom throws some Doom 2 enemies in Doom 1's levels.

back when i used to write extremely long writeups of old fps games for this thread i said that doom 2's levels were awful and everyone got mad at me

the ssg and the deepened bestiary were huge additions, but the level set is just terrible. past the crusher it is aaaaall downhill.

You have been called out, in the ways of old.
I liked a lot of Doom 2's maps but I think Doom 1's maps were better on the whole despite the lack of monster variety.
Doom 2 was rushed out the door and its maps couldn't take advantage of the extra monsters quite fully.
It's not a big deal since nobody plays Doom 1/2 for the original maps anyway, it's all about the wads baby.

The lows of Doom 2's maps were very low, I do not know what they were thinking with some of the city maps that had terrible layouts and even worse visual cohesion. I distinctly recall a single map wad that came out shortly after Doom 2 did, this is still in the mid-90s, and it was a city map that looked like a city, proving the game could do it, but the creators just didn't have the time or the resources to do it properly.

doom 1's maps outside of ep 1 and parts of ep 4 are garbage. 2 and 3 are wall to wall tedium. doom 2 has a lot of stinkers but the increased bestiary stops it from feeling anywhere near as boring

It does not have any form of TV out at all

EDIT: The only ones that have TV out are the RG 350 series, which are much less powerful than the 351 series and has fewer native ports, but it is fast enough for Doom/Heretic/Hexen, and you have to use a specific firmware to get the HDMI out working which is a pain, and the Retroid Pocket 2, which is Android based and thus also has fewer native ports available and a bad fake right stick, but it does have the power to run DOSBOX ok and has Half Life and RTCW and Quake ports (but that right stick).

I must be a little odd, I don't remember having much issue with Doom 1's Eps 2 and 3. Besides Mt. Erebus, which is so bad and so hideous that the act of playing it is akin to shoving needles in your eyes. God drat what an awful to look at map. Other than that though, I found them largely enjoyable if not astonishingly memorable. Doom 2's got some gems in there, but then you have crap like The Waste Tunnels (the one level I've decided to take advantage of jumping and crouching to escape faster) or most of Ep 2.

Actually, related, what levels in classic FPSs do you just dislike? I'm not fond of Doom 1's E1M7, personally, and I do find E2M2 to be a bit of a slog. I'm kinda curious what the most disliked levels are.

I don't think they'd started on Quake yet (that was during Ultimate Doom's development IIRC). My guess is Romero was just basking in the success of Doom and doing press and interviews and stuff and didn't want to crunch on map design since they had hired people to do that.

Was DOOM II really more of a crunch than DOOM? Given the state of DOOM during the October press release beta it's amazing what they got done by December.

I mean, sure, they had to create 29ish all new maps but at least they had a fully working game engine for the duration of its development.

Play testing and map tuning is actually important though. I mean, Romero easily could be the type to screw off all day but I suspect there was some legitimacy to what he was doing.

The "brain fills in the blanks" immersion trick still works really well, I feel kinda bad for the AAA devs that actually have to make or the extra details and then it "feels" less immersive since it just means it looks more like a video game in your brain. Just have some rectangles, distance fog, greebling and simple textures that aren't very clear and let your imagination do the rest.

Romero was doing a lot of what you could generously call PR during Doom 2 & Quake. Doom was a big enough hit that everybody wanted to know what was next, learn more about the people behind the scenes, have the creators show up to events, etc. Romero did a lot to build the rockstar image of id Software at the time.

Totally came at the expense of the games themselves, of course.

IIRC Romero's counterclaim was that there was a chunk of Quake development where the engine was changing constantly and becoming incompatible with all your work, so rather than churn out scores of maps that wouldn't work next week he did Producer Stuff on Ultimate Doom and the Raven games. So he was doing stuff, but it wasn't on Quake and the rest of the team didn't much like that.

Of course, this was the period of Id history where the OG team really started falling out, and was also near the height of Romero's ego (before Daikatana, a decade in the mobile/casual wilderness etc. etc. deflated that), so history tends to be a bit weird and flexible until records from the time float up.

Oh yeah, speaking of Quake: That Alkaline mod that was teased the other day is out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4J9UYEJ9jbE

To summarize: Three new/returning weapons, 20 new/returning monsters, a bagful of mapping toys (both new and from other mods) and nine new maps to show it all off.
