I am wondering why he mentioned everything after voodoo 1 they went to those svideo (but not ) > VGA adapters for the passthrough because me and my brothers voodoo 2 still had the VGA > VGA passthroughs

they were real rear end voodoos since they had spooky face paint models and not cgi wizards.

I'm not sure on the condition of the STFM, I am going to pull it apart and check the capacitors in the power supply before putting any juice through it

The Star Cursor was made by an Australian arcade machine company, so has very nice micro switched joystick and buttons. However they are clunky to hold and use, and much prefer something like the TAC2 or Competition Pro.

Somehow the software feels vastly older than the hardware, which is giving me simultaneous feelings of "wow, that was a long time ago" and "oh come on, that isn't THAT out of date, is it?"

Probably it's because I've been working with software and OSes all along, but I really haven't done much hardware work since Dubya was president.

Whatever the reason, I think it's another sign of getting old. :corsair:

heh.
My Token Ring is now a true ring, with two stations inserted!

8226 MAU got here on Friday, and after fixing some cracked plastics it works!
Server inserted right away, no issues.

The glorious Apple Token Ring 4/16 NB Card put up a fight though.
First it had a bent pin in the DIN 41612 connector which could fortunately be bent back without snapping. I do have a box of those at work but unsoldering a 96 pin connector is not my idea of fun.
After that I spent probably 4 hours trying to get the drat thing to insert.
MacTest Pro doesn't seem to have a diagnostic mode for this card so couldn't really initially verify that the card was even working right.

Ended up trashing all the networking stuff, and going back to NSI 1.3, then to 1.51 (latest released) to get all the drivers installed. Then I reinstalled OpenTransport 1.3.
Finally, after configuring the link speed in the Token Ring control panel, then setting up TCP/IP for DHCP and closing it, I heard the glorious click of a station inserting.

File transfer speed is around 200-250 kb/s, same as Ethernet.
Latency is 6 or 13 ms according to Ping, this will change with the station count I guess.

The computer definitely feels snappier doing network stuff now compared to with Ethernet, Pro Tools can play back audio from the network drive just fine over both, but with Token Ring it clearly spent less time getting data from the network, resulting in a more responsive system.
Could be some quirk of the Token Ring implementation which makes it more easily accelerated with this hardware I guess, or it could simply be that the Ethernet network had tons of modern broadcast data while this new network is isolated on its own subnet.

Fun fact: seems like the Spectrum 24/III acceleration breaks when a Token Ring card is installed. So for now that's my secondary display with acceleration off, kind of sucks to leave that off but the entire display would jump around and glitch out randomly with it enabled. I guess I'll just be on the lookout for a second RasterOps card, since I know that is compatible.
Other fun fact: if the network goes down, the computer locks up in the AFP driver
Token Ring, being Enterprise Grade, would never go down so this is clearly not an issue.

Would an old home cinema receiver work? The size and power consumption isn't ideal, but they were made in fairly large numbers, shouldn't be that expensive now(?), and usually come with remotes.

There are projectors which can receive operations data through an ethernet connection (turn on/off, shutter) as well as, iirc, get picture/video data that way too.
