watched the sound of metal, it was good re-read banks' transition. not as bad as i remembered, but still pretty rough. also feels really dated despite only being like ten years old, mostly because of how he keeps coming back to 2008 as if it was a major historical landmark on par with the end of the cold war

i think the biggest problem with transition that i hadn’t noticed so much the first time is that the heroes basically win by just being more badass, just because they are. the protag’s miracle escape without a pill, obviously. the villain has a lot of minions but the protag suddenly utterly outclasses them in ways that don’t really feel earned. bisquitine is an unstoppable force until the protag’s mentor shows up and she’s immediately ineffectual without any explanation (because they used to be friends? but she hadn’t recognized her yet). the villain literally invented tandem transitioning and is the best at it but then the mentor just outmaneuvers her and does it better also the asylum scenes are just torturous. also every single bad person dies poetically. also the characterization shifts a lot, although maybe that’s intentional. also there are so many awful asides about politics and torture blegh, i don’t think i’ll be re-reading it again
