me and my friends played the new house and got the yokai. it burned our sanity to zero in just a couple minutes and started a hunt while we were loitering in the ghost room and very pointedly not shutting up. we played a few more missions and it seems like the ghosts are a lot more dangerous now in general, i like it.

Yeah, the Yokai description isn't kidding when it says it hates people talking. Very first solo hunt I did in the new map was a Yokai who happened to be one of the most active ghosts I've ever seen, and that was when I was being quiet. The activity part was probably RNG, but I got annoyed with it hissing at me multiple times and started to yell "Knock it off, ya basta-" and a hunt started before I could even finish, haha.

Legit, Yokai is so much fun, and having it give Spirit Box evidence is loving mean in the best way. I legit walked into the bathroom in the new house after being like "Are you angry?", the box said KILL, and the ghost spawned like, 3 steps behind me and destroyed me because I just didn't have the time to react. It was amazing. 10/10, would get wrecked again.

I haven't played in a while but it doesn't sound like the sticks got nerfed. It sounds like the smoking animation was reduced to 6 seconds to match the actual effect on the ghost:

Correct. Insym has a video on it and he even didn't realize how smudges worked before talking to the dev. It's not a major change, turns out.

Best hiding spots on the new map are behind the dresser in the master bed, near the washer/dryer in the garage (except when a fuckin garage ghost spawns right there RIP me), and most of the basement. Those french garage doors are indeed hideous.

Okay I've played the game basically from release but I still have to ask: how do smudges work? We've always just used them as sort of a precaution when we're at low sanity, but haven't ever successfully repelled the ghost during a hunt (that we're aware of). I'm not actually super clear on the exact mechanics of how they work.

edit: so my understanding of how they work is that if you're not in a hunt, using smudges will prevent the ghost from hunting for some amount of time (90/180 secs depending on ghost, iirc) while also increasing the chance of ghost activity, and if it's a Yurei it will prevent it from leaving the room. But i'm not super clear on how to use them during a hunt, since we've tried a bunch of times but never got the "repel a ghost while it's hunting someone" objective, and I'm not sure if it's just because we haven't been close enough or what.

You have to wait until the ghost is close to you to start the smudge. I don't think you can smudge from outside the range and bring it in while it's smoking, I've gotten killed every time I tried that. There's no visual or audio indication that you smudged the ghost properly, you just have to wait until you can hear your heartbeat and they're within 3 meters of you to light the smudge, then get away. During the 5 or so seconds the ghost is stunned by the smudge, you can run through the ghost and nothing will happen.

When I have the "smudge during a hunt" objective I'll usually wait near my chosen hiding spot, trigger a hunt, then yell until the ghost comes to me so I can smudge it and quick dip into my hiding spot

Baron Fuzzlewhack

ALIVE ENOUGH TO DIE
I don't know how reliable it is now, but a few months ago I was able to consistently turn the ghost away from me by lighting the sticks after it got really close during a hunt, like a second away from killing me.

It would also almost always turn right back around about six seconds later and come back to the spot I was in when I lit them, so if I wasn't gone, I was dead.

Smudges are 2 pulses of a 6 meter smudge aura, one when you light and one when it burns out. Out of a hunt if the smudge aura hits the ghost, it prevents them from hunting and increases activity. During a hunt if the smudge aura hits a ghost, it puts them in wander mode for a few seconds dropping all targeting. For the objective, someone needs to be actively chased when someone smudges during a hunt. That's the only thing that the game checks for, is someone getting gurgled/heartbeat at when the smudge is lit.

Correct you have to punch the ghost in the face with a newly lit stick to repel it during a hunt.

I have not played in about 7 months, so far I've gathered that there is one new map, and the ghosts are a bit more aggressive. Is this game worth getting back into? The reason me and my friends stopped playing was pretty much because we got so good at it that the ghosts never really got a chance to hunt us.

oh yeah you should def hop back in and give it a try. My partner and I are close to level 600 and we still get got every now and then (got a total team wipe just a couple days ago even). Ghosts are a lot more aggressive now, certain ones far more so, and they speed up when they have line of sight on you so you can't just endlessly kite everything but revenants anymore.

personally I'm looking forward to the Phasmophobia BR where 100 ghost hunters drop in on a map and have to identify 100 ghosts in the time limit

How would y'all rank your maps? With its maze like corridors and endless copied and pasted rooms, I still maintain that Asylum is more tedious than scary and by a long shot the worst map in the entire bunch. High school is somewhat better, but it can still feel tedious. Prison is a good compromise, but I feel like my favorite maps are the farmhouses.

Baba Yaga Fanboy
May 18, 2011

I'd agree with those rankings pretty well. I want to like Asylum more, but especially since the thermometer nerf I cannot find the fuckin' ghost room for the life of me and the whole place is just too goddamn big. I wish it had the option to be broken up into upstairs/downstairs levels so I could actually narrow down where the spookin' sumbitch is

mercenarynuker
Sep 10, 2008

Asylum just takes forever. My group's first foray into the asylum was a Shade that just hid from us, making finding the room impossible, even with four people roaming the halls. Considering my group has since dropped to just my buddy and I, with an occassional third, high school is about as big as I go. I should try prison again, but I always get lost in there. I really like all of the town houses. Farmhouses are fine, too, but I like the one without an attic more than the one with

Asylum is scariest for me because, as FlavoFibe and Evil Kit can attest, my map awareness is poo poo and i get turned around easily so it’s not uncommon for me to be the only person left in asylum and getting chain hunted and further turned around :(

Otherwise, I agree that farmhouse maps are my favorite. They’re plenty scary and also fun in general. I’m really liking Willow house and having to hide behind objects.

Mason Dixon

Even though an asylum run often takes noticeably longer, I find high school the most tedious. The long walk from the truck to any of the entrances and back is the biggest offender for me (there's no suspense since nothing can happen outside), at least with asylum you're right there at the entrance. Maybe this is less a problem for big groups, but it's really annoying for solo play if I have to make several trips for equipment. High school also has arguably the biggest death trap if you get really unlucky with a gym ghost. And asylum has the cool echo to help distract me from long treks.

Otherwise, yeah, farmhouses > small houses > prison > high school/asylum.

Son of Thunderbeast
Sep 21, 2002
My partner and I rarely do Asylum, but it's not too bad with the parabolic mics. Our times are roughly comparable to the high school; it helps that the basement only has one hallway per wing instead of two like the first floor.

Looks like the big announcement is two more devs hired on to the team! I was thinking it was going to be some kind of feature or something but this is good too, hopefully we start seeing more added to the game soon.
