Some of the stuff is questionable but like, I think it's neat on how they chose the English names for simple stuff, like Covetous Demon in 2 Japanese - 貪りデーモン [musabari de:mon] English - Covetous Demon 貪り [musabari] - this kanji was also used in Gaping Dragon from DSI 貪食 [donshoku]. It means "to long insatiably for something". The English localization picked the word "covetous" that has a meaning of "longing for something, especially if somebody else has it". Works great with the lore: when this demon was a man, he desired queen Mytha's love but she loved another. Who would've thought that DSII is full of romance and love stories.

Miyazaki FROM titles have some of the best cross-cultural translations in the entire biz, if not the best. The dude is extremely gifted at writing for the medium and he consistently manages to explore and communicate complex topics to a mass audience using a framework that plays to the strength of the medium, even if the delivery/reception of those topics is indirect, abstract, or playing on the subconscious. I really revere the dude and his talented team, I think they've brought some rather incredible innovations into the medium. Sometimes it's just things we see as mundane, other times it's things that are joked about and mocked popularly, and still more some of their ideas have yet to be really reckoned with or appreciated and will only come to light with the passage of time. I simply can't imagine the landscape of gaming without them, and I feel privileged to have been here to see it all go down.

I absolutely agree, and it's something that occurs to me whenever I revisit one of the games (or watch a video that talks about the lore). You can totally see where a more uninspired translation team would turn something like: quote:A piece of rubbish that is good for nothing. ...into something like: quote:A piece of garbage. Or: quote:Each king has his rightful throne. And when he sits upon it, he sees what he chooses to see. ...into something like: quote:Every king sits upon a throne. What I find interesting is that--unlike previous From titles--some of the translations might be going in the other direction. How many words for "penis" does Japanese even have, anyway?

I posted the video earlier itt, but seeing the slightly off English translation of Aldrich in that From Soft Zbrush presentation that’s in Japanese made me feel dumb because before that I didn’t realize that Aldrich is just a slight variation on the word Eldritch, and Aldrich being a weirdo god devouring blob makes it even more obvious.

I felt it varied. In both Darksouls and Bloodborne some of the contextual translations worked fine. Sometimes they didn't get the precise original intent across but were often minor differences that meant nothing substantial was missed. But some, mainly in Bloodborne, corrupted or reversed meanings entirely. There was a lot of nuance in bloodborne that is entirely lost in the translation but could still be inferred thanks to the games amazing atmosphere. I mean lets face it, bloodbornes biggest mistake was making 'eyes on the inside' into an in-universe meme to the extent a large amount of people take away that getting literal eyeball brain tumours make you turn into Cthulhu. It's the phantasms, dunkasses
