Yeah, that is the way it was for quite some time and was the running joke. Even my old man who wasn't quite into hypermiler territory couldn't reach them.

This family have bought 2 cars, each one has been sold with an auto-braking safety setup. They decide to test these and well, the VW just doesn't loving work. The VW was bought expressly because the guy's wife is a nervous driver. They moved to a foreign country which drives on the other side of the road and the additional security of the more expensive VW's supposed higher level brake assist meant she felt better about going out in it.

I'm assuming something is just not working but you shouldn't need to loving test it with an inflatable man to find out.

Data Graham posted:

Something something VW system that detects when it's in a safety test and works with inflatable dummies/when safety inspectors are watching but doesn't work with actual humans on real roads

Actually the opposite. Few years ago a car magazine did a large scale testing and on the VAG model they had, they couldn't get the automatic emergency braking to work at all, unlike the other cars. They contacted importer and VAG and finally figured out the issue. On that model the AEB only works when the navigation recognizes that they are on an official road. Inside a testing center it would not do anything.

AEB testing really should be part of any car testing, because they have such a huge variation on how well they work, and what is the maximum supported speed. Relatively few seem to work even at highway speeds.

The Mazda system is optical at low speeds but uses the ACC radar at higher speeds so cars that don't have ACC don't get highway auto braking.

Meanwhile my rental Maxima randomly yells out WARNING! TOLL BOOTH! when I'm miles from a toll road.

The intelligent cruise will bring me to a full stop, but then let off the brakes and let me roll into the car in front of me if I'm not paying attention. The AEB has only squawked at me once on a road... after I came to a complete stop. It won't let me back up as close as I'd like to to my garage door though, it locks up the brakes and won't let me get closer than ~8" to it.

I have to say, the cross-traffic backup alarm on the wife’s 2015 Explorer has been really great. The forward offset check, less so, but it has scared the poo poo out of us when somebody is stopped waiting to turn left in the oncoming turn lane. The lane check and drowsy driver stuff works well.

All of these things are true but also the new Bronco Sport is a special case because the rear liftgate allows you to access the cargo area through the glass like the big Broncos from the 90s did. The designers and engineers are limited in that respect by accessibility requirements in the vehicle design.

Yes, that's the "operable rear windows" thing you quoted. And in typical Ford fashion it appear to have the motor on the inside of the glass, which is even more problematic than the alternative.
