Roughly 70% that, 30% quietly supporting Palestine to try and stave off desertion by Muslim voters and hoping nobody outside of the constituency picks up on it. A winning combination.

This crap popped up on a news aggregator for me yesterday, you can guess the content from the link without bothering to click through.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9694427/Rishi-Sunak-squirms-hes-grilled-Andrew-Neil-GB-NEWS-ballooning-government-spending.html

It's interesting how GB news is functioning as a credibility engine. The hostile tone of the interview is pure charade because Sunak and Neil are both ideologically aligned. Sunak squirming is not so much the grilling as "oooh spank me harder Andrew".
The government donates credibility to the channel by allowing Sunak to even show up, and the channel donates credibility to the government by exhorting them to carry out actions they already intend to. It is manufacturing public desire for a planned set of outcomes that both parties agree on.

The only joy to get out of politics these days is watching increasingly uncomfortable and unsure centrist Labour MPs and their supporters on the news talking about how, actually, losing is winning so I'm excited for the upcoming content.

there was a woman on channel 4 news last night who said that by-election result last night was good news for labour

Lib Dem gains in Tory areas aside, I hope the Greens fill more of Labour's voids than the Lib Dems. It'd be a shame for history to look upon the Labour movement as an aberration: something that hung around for a century before things went back to normal Con/Lib balances. It'd be good to make it clear that the reason Labour died is not through a desire to return to Con/Lib, but to move further left.

Hello, dear
i reckon these nutters in charge of labour, of an evening they sit by themselves listening to the d-ream song on repeat, and they close their eyes and clench their fists and say "it's 1998 again, it's 1998 again, it's 1998 again" over and over and they contort their muscles like they're trying their utmost to flatulate (and in most cases do) and then they open their eyes to see if it's worked and it's 1998 again, but it hasn't and it isn't

and that's their plan

Sometimes, in a city this dirty, you need a real hero.

I didn't watch it because football's boring as gently caress, but I did think ahead of it that a nil nil draw would be the most politically safe outcome of the game. Lo and behold that was the result.

I dunno how Scotland are these days but given that most football games play out as you expect (with the historically better team usually winning), it did seem odd England not trouncing us.

If I were a paranoid person, I'd think the government told the England team to take it easy so as not to rile up the separatists. Or is Scotland better now and England a bit poo poo?

Julio Cruz
May 19, 2006
on paper England are easily the better team but they always manage to be a lot less than the sum of their parts when it comes to tournaments

and they didn't exactly play like it was a game they particularly wanted to win, they'd clearly decided before the game even started that a draw was a good enough result

And you've got the football that's played by the team in the north and the football that's played by the team in the south and it's all mixed together on the same pitch and they're all just trying to get the ball in the goal Clive, and that's what we used to call miwk.

OwlFancier

I think football would be better if it were a sort of player versus environment takeshi's castle kind of arrangement where everyone competes to score a goal against the pitch which is filled with burly men hitting the players with giant q tips.

And I also now know that I don't have to go very far to get a potentially controlling share in the people who can make that happen, I'm sure one of the other football people would go along with it for a laff

Its all so clumsily cynical that I'm sure it repels voters more than anything. The big reveal of Starmer's leadership to me is how the people around him just fundamentally aren't very good at politics and don't seem to know it.

Fun Shoe

A good read, thanks.

When I did a spell working as a sub-editor for a proofing firm (predictive text wanted to say 'farm', which might have been more accurate) I clashed several times with the news senior sub over whether 'the international community' was a weasel word or not.

The house style guide required us to remove or rewrite weasel words and it was clear to me that 'the international community' nearly always meant 'America and its allies', and was therefore at best a weasel word or was just blatantly misleading.

His main argument boiled down to "yes, more countries supported [thing] than condemned it, but all the important countries condemned it."

I suspect my response of "so should I change 'international community' to 'important countries' then?" was why my as-and-when contract suddenly became very empty of working hours.

It's George Galloway backed up by the Communist Party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist) which is an explicitly "anti-revisionist" party & formed after some members of Socialist Labour Party were mad because Arthur Scargill wasn't pro-North Korea enough for them. Mostly they are notable for being absolute dogshit on trans rights as you sometimes find on the far left fringes where they mutter quietly to an audience of one about "bourgeoisie degeneracy" & for the stance that surge, the Great Purges happened but that was all Yezhov, Stalin knew nothing lol.

The thing about Galloway on CBB is that everyone focuses on the cat thing, and not how he instantly formed a clique with the nastiest piece of poo poo in the house and spent the whole time turning everyone against each other. The argument with Barrymore is one of the most horrific examples I can remember ever seeing of someone spitefully laying into someone who is clearly an emotional wreck.

Also how pleased he seemed to be to see Saville when he turned up as part of a task.
