Carly shook her glass, willing the ice to melt. "You still haven't told me what the mission is."

She leaned forward. "We are going to assassinate the bad men of Hollywood."

If word gets out there's a good chance he'll even write a really depressing song about you.

I think I'm about to give up listening to Cocaine and Rhinestones podcast. This week's episode contains a 25 minute intro about the history of bullfighting and then the rest is more George Jones stuff. Maybe he ties it all together at the end but I don't know if I can wait around to find out. Now I love me some George Jones, but I don't know that I need another hour since he's talked about him so much before.

I felt like as it went on and got more popular, Tyler would also evolve and maybe even edit himself a bit. His delivery is not a conversation or discussion, it's straight up like listening to an audio book.

Dude spent 3 loving years putting together a podcast season on one artist.

I was pretty excited for a country music history podcast when it debuted, but it's really been a letdown. It's such a shame since there's so much rich history to cover.

I had no idea the entire season was about George Jones. I still don't get why you need a 25-30 minute intro for moonshine or bullfighting. I mean, I guess its possible the make it entertaining if you can actually make it not sound like you are reading from a teleprompter. There's no passion or emotion in his voice at all.

The wandering unfocused 25 minute intro that just eats away at an episode with inane one-sided small talk is what way too many podcasters are doing now. I blame Marc Maron.

I really hope that one day a ton of TNN footage from the early-mid 90s gets officially released because where were so many great performances. Just look up Ralph Emory show on YouTube and you'll find lots of stuff. Most of the "old timers" were all but forgotten as soon as Garth Brooks entered the pop charts and this was the one place you could see excellent performances. 10x better than Hee Haw which was trash anyway by the mid 80s.

Speaking of Vince Gill and George Jones (and I think I've mentioned this a few times) one of the most heartbreaking things I've ever heard is Vince Gill in tears and ugly crying his way through Go Rest High On That Mountain at Jone's funeral. If your eyes don't well up a little when watching this, I feel sorry for you.

A few years ago so might be old news to many but I just noticed the Kacey Musgraves remix/cover of "Neon Moon". If you told me Kacey Musgraves did a good cover of that song, I'd of course believe you. If you'd told me that it was sequencer pop that puts autotune on the Brooks & Dunn vocals as backup I might not have -- but it's good!

I never realized Mermaid Avenue by Wilco & Billy Bragg is Woody Guthrie lyrics that had never been put to music before. Not a very consistent album, but has a few great songs.

Cool, didn’t know there was a Vol II. Will check that out tonight

Amazing how modern the lyrics feel, on at least some of the songs. I guess the exact date of when California Stars was written isn’t known, but Guthrie’s daughter thought it was probably the late 30s. I totally thought that it was written in the 90s by Bragg and Wilco til now!

That Billy Bragg and Wilco project is great.
In a similar vein, the album that Jay Farrar and Ben Gibbard did is enjoyable as well.
edit: I guess it was a score for a Kerouac documentary but still.

poo poo, there are three volumes of the Wilco/Billy Bragg project, but vol III certainly feels like it was just the scraps from the session.

Jay Farrar also set some unpublished Guthrie lyrics/poems to music on an album called New Multitudes which is credited to Jay Farrar, Anders Parker, Jim James (as Yim Yames), and Will Johnson (of the excellent Centro-matic).

Here's Bob Segar performing a song written by Woody Guthrie, credited to Billy Bragg and Wilco, arranged and originally performed by probably just Wilco
