Student athletes aren’t students. A lot of student athletes are students who are also athletes. You think the track runner at a D2 school actually believes for even a second that they’re going to go to some giant business pipeline job?

Hell, even at D1 schools, athletes are typically smart enough to know the odds. Like tens of thousands of graduates per year, with a handful of pro slots.

Let’s not pretend that just because a student doesn’t become a pro athlete that they ruined their lives and were a waste of a degree. Decidedly even moreso for women athletes who, even if they are fantastic, may have no pro pipeline at all or one that you can only do as a side job, not a career.

The top dollar sports at the "pipeline" schools do rob the athletes of a meaningful degree by having the athletes in basically phony programs

Pretty sure to deploy them they have to say they're doing it under the authorized use of force given by Congress to fight the war on terror. I could be wrong though.

Sure, but middle eastern shenanigans and ongoing africa shenanigans would be under the same heading right? At this point would it all be counted as one contiguous twenty year forever war?

Student athlete chat: I professional student advisor at a well known SEC school for three and a half years. Due to the rules the football players had to see me first. They were completely uninterested in anything I had to say because the team had a complete duplicate of my office that would erase all my work and replace it with special football advising.

The go to major for players was Sociology because it did not have a math requirement. As I was leaving the department instituted a fairly rigorous statistics requirement to discourage this. Then the team began switching to Political Science because, again, no math requirement. Some players seemed to know that the pros weren't for them and wanted to major in Sports Management. Well, the SM folks had long ago instituted a pretty brutal regime of math and science pre-reqs to prevent this.

When I occasionally taught a class in my phd program I would have football players routinely leave headphones in or just walk out halfway through class, they were bored and wanted to leave. We couldn't do anything about that.

When Vince McMahon restarted the XFL before 2020 I looked at the team rosters. Apparently the XFL was a job for all the Division 2 schools. Too bad it folded.

The school I work at now recruits players from the west coast and plunges them into a major that requires up to Calc 2 and Organic Chemistry. They rarely last, it's sad and many of them flunk out.

I have a hard time affixing too much blame on student athletes for entitlement and ignorance. When you've been getting special privileges and having accountability removed since middle school because you football good it's going to warp perspective. It's another way players are victimized by a system that is set up for the financial benefit of and entertainment for a group of old white dudes.

I feel like a lot of the resentment over paying players is crab bucket mentality. The college sports ecosystem, especially for football is hosed, but if it's going to continue existing I'd rather more money goes to the players instead of being exclusively captured by everyone exploiting them.
