Unfortunately on Carl Zha's own podcast (not the episode linked) talking with a guy (Otto Kolbl?), some of their disagreements make it seem like Zha either isn't informed in certain areas or communicates poorly. Zha and the guest may have had different experiences at different time periods which may be part of the reason for some of the disagreements. RWN was able to keep the flow and focus, but it makes me more cautious of how to interpret some of his statements correctly to his intentions, along with the veracity.

I skipped to somewhere after the hour mark to try to find the Tiananmen Square bits. I think it started closer to 1:15:00. Around there, it was fairly frequent that Carl made some generalization that Kolbl immediately disagreed with and then Carl tried to revise what he meant. It seemed like Carl was then trying to say he actually meant what Kolbl meant, and then Carl rephrased himself. To which Kolbl immediately disagreed with the rephrasing. Most of it was about more broad statements, Carl said something like "the Chinese government is good at crafting propaganda for domestic consumption, but their international are terrible". I can't recall too specifically about the other instances, but it was less listenable than RWN and even though these had nothing to do with the various interviews and research that form the basis of Carl's takes on Xinjiang and the Uyghurs, his floundering in the Kolbl interview gives me cause to have second thoughts.

Ah, I think I listened to that. My memory is that Kolbl was out-tankieing Zha by a serious margin and absolutely wasn't having any fake conciliatory agreement.
Anyway Zha is a pretty great guest, but somewhat of a mess as a host.

chomsky also has a long and disgusting history of genocide denial and the china defenders in this thread (and presumably CSPAM but I don't go there) closely follow that playbook. raise doubts about impartiality, distort statements and motives, outright lie if necessary - but only about your targets (the vague specter of "neoliberalism" or "imperialism" - they're interchangeable depending on what crowd you find yourself in). never apply the same scrutiny to statements of the perpetrators of genocide and above all never engage with the evidence on its own merits. (particularly appalling in the case of bellingcat whose evidence is always, by definition, readily available to anyone with an internet connection and can be verified more or less trivially.) you must always attack the source by any means necessary, even - perhaps especially - if that means fundamentally undermining trust in us NGOs and media institutions.

the fact that this strategy is exactly the same as that used by domestic right-wing extremists and foreign authoritarians does not seem to occur to these people, nor does it appear to bother them that when open, transparent sources are all discredited they must rely on increasingly fringe sources like grayzone, globalresearch, or just straight up sputnik. presumably they believe that they hold a monopoly on truth and therefore do not need to subject themselves to information hygiene practices like questioning assumptions and critically assessing evidence without regard to source (this is also what the right-wingers believe but that does not occur to them either)

bellingcats xinjiang coverage consisted of falsly claiming a massive historical mosque in a large city anyone can visit was torn down using faulty loving satellite photos of them redoing the 30 year old gatehouse because brown moses is pigshit ignorant about history, architecture, islam, china, and basically everything else.

all the crappy us navy stuff is reminding me of an early 90s russian book called omon ra. its about a guy who becomes a cosmonaut and is sent on an unmanned moon landing, which is to say, all aspects supposedly done by machiens are actually just done by cosmonauts, so like the rocket stage separation is done by a guy who then dies immediately, and so on. the main characters job is to pedal a moon lander to a certain spot, fire off a signal, and then die of exposure on the moon (they give him a gun to kill himself but it misfires). he tries to break out of the lunar module and discovers he's actually in an abandoned subway tunnel underneath moscow.

to me this all sounds like a good metaphor for the us navys new ships.

i really like the one ship class where they put this super cool high tech gun on it, but then decided that the ammunition was too expensive to manufacture. so the gun is completely non functional lol. true late soviet era vibes.
