I want to talk about some smash hit gay wuxia but its not out on Netflix for English speakers yet so I'm bidding my time. The attempts to curtail the conversation about the leads has not gone smoothly and is also a fascinating topic!

What’s it called? isn’t BL drama a pretty fast growing category? Actually never occurred to me until you said now that it could be running afoul of censors.

That's honestly the dream in so many areas, I'm tired of arguing with tankies about anything bad china does because inevitably it goes"a bloo bloo bloo america does bad things too". Like no poo poo it does, I'm well aware of that but I'm very specifically talking about the HK protest crackdown or the early SARS and Covid response or the literal internment and cultural genocide of the Uighurs and how that's starting to spread to other minority groups as we loving speak and all the info is right out there, in Chinese, straight from China so unless you think that the local government officials in China are also CIA fronts then shut up.

Yeah as far as I know, US policy towards indigenous peoples at some point ended up being "just stop thinking about them entirely" whereas in Canada there was official, state sanctioned cultural genocide occurring in some form all the way up to the late 90's.

A few weeks ago we uncovered a mass grave of indigenous children in one of our former glorified concentration camps and it's a nightmarish guarantee that they'll find more now that they're going to be doing ground-penetrating radar scans of every former residential school site.

it'd be loving swell if China looked at our mistakes and decided not to repeat them instead of using their existence as carte-blanche to speedrun the exact same thing

I've also been meaning to try Brian David Gilbert's pepcorn recipe and laoganma is the key ingredient.

Yeah honestly I expected the laoganma to be a lot hotter since it's from Guizhou originally. It does have a kick but it's a lot milder than sriracha which is the easiest comparison I can think of.

I got a big jar of crispy chili and one of black bean off Amazon since I'm in a rural area and don't have a local Chinese grocery.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_termination_policy

in the US it went up until https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Child_Welfare_Act basically

prior to ICWA lots of Native kids were forcibly removed from their families and sent to boarding schools and/or placed with white families to forcibly assimilate them (my boss was one of them, barely knew his birth family until he was in his early 20s)

the American Indian Movement in the 1970s was a major turning point for indigenous rights in the US.

I mean things are still really really bad but I had no idea Canada was still doing state-sanctioned cultural genocide until that recently

(definitely not trying to get into a genocide olympics)

I actually saw an interesting thing on Twitter a few weeks ago about how a lot of older Taiwanese millennials/gen xers are getting a little sad about the food situation there, especially in Taipei.

They said all the way through the 90s and into the early 00s there was a ton of really good Chinese food from all over the mainland, mostly from the people or kids of the people who came over after the civil war. You could get great cantonese, sichuan, dongbei, shanghainese (i guess this one still exists via DTF), xiang, etc.... very easily in the city. Because all these people came over from the places themselves it was all great and homey and even within certain types of cuisine there was a lot of variety.

For whatever reason no one has continued most of these restaurants and tons of them have closed over the past decade or so, and these days Taiwan's food scene is getting more homogenous. Taiwanese food itself is still going strong, and there's obv still plenty of other Chinese food, but the general variety and quality of different types of mainland Chinese food has apparently gone down a bit.

I came to a similar shocked realization a few years ago when I read that Indigenous tribes in canada aren't even treated as states that run their own affairs, have their own flag, etc. I kinda took that for granted as the norm regarding american indian rights.
