Oh my god it just hit me. The TVA's stupid disintegrator batons aren't just terrible cop-weapons designed for terror and excessive lethality rather than effective combat. A dead person is still there, their story continues in the aftermath and legacy of their words and deeds. They're goddamn erasers. They literally have the little nub tip. They erase characters' stories and undo everything they ever were.

Of course their "weapons" (clumsy and badly wielded and excessive) are just erasing. Of course they're bad at combat and heroics - those are things they control and manage but are fundamentally beyond them. Edit: And of course "resetting" may be "making them useful to the TVA and/or their narrative." Another suitable word? Retconning. Jetrauben fucked around with this message at 21:37 on Jun 23, 2021 |

OB_Juan posted:I think people are way overthinking this scene. The scene is from the TVA Agent's memory. She was there at the bar with someone, Sylvie was impersonating that someone. Apparently that someone was her best friend. You're missing the point. We understand the plot. We're talking about the extratextual motivation for the writers to make that decision, as opposed to having them be, let's say, gay lovers. We don't know anything about the TVA agent's history, so the writers could have made up anything they wanted. But yeah I agree it would have been kinda sketch if they did make Sylvie be pretending to be her lover in order to gaslight her. Probably the right choice in this scene. I guess they could have left it unstated and just leave it open.

Great, now I have the mental image of Timekeepers: Only one true canon! With that said I'm happy I'm not the only one thinking this is overt homage to Doctor Who. There was so much Hiddle-stan fanservice in this episode to make up for lack of plot. (Singing Loki! Sassy Loki! Stabby Loki! Drunk Loki! Slightly mussed outfit Loki!)

I am here for the Loki fan service. I also continue to enjoy that huge chunks of each episode are just characters talking to each other and having minutes-long conversations. I also continue to be entertained that companion to that, the fights continue to be generally quite bad and boring, lol. What an interesting show for Marvel.

The writers of this show have no idea what they've done. Tumblr and Twitter are going crash after introducing naked Loki, dancing Loki, canonical bisexual Loki, and Loki in a suit. It will only embolden the erotic fanfic writers.

I've felt this way for all of the Marvel shows/movies tbh, aside from rare ones like Winter Soldier where the action scenes were really well done. I would rather be watching the characters bouncing off of each other than 20-minute special effect scenes.

How does Loki not understand how enchantment works this story takes place literally immediately after the events of The Avengers e: agree with others; while the first two episodes were great by themselves, this episode felt like it can only really be judged in the context of what happens in the next episode (which is a charitable way of saying that there was one big revelation about the TVA, a bit of character establishment, and an awful lot of treading water). Will be disappointed if they hit the reset button or establish that Loki was a step ahead of everyone the whole time, that would reduce the whole episode to a waste of runtime. I think the batons have the same effect as the time-reset charges on an individual scale, in that they erase the presence of a variant from the prime timeline. From what I recall we’ve only seen them used on variants so far (taking the TVA agents to be repurposed variants).

Erasing all the elements of the victim's life history.

Well, erasing them from the point of variance.

To add a bit to that, what I mean is that if ‘our’ Loki (in the context of this tv show) were to take a baton hit, he would wink out of existence as he’s a variant. But the prime timeline Loki (who went on to participate in the events of the second and third Thor films) will still exist/have existed. Thor will not suddenly not have had an adopted brother whose actions push him into the MCU storyline, the variant would just suddenly cease to be.

No Luck Needed posted:Loki can't fly? Even Yamcha could fly I wondered this too, and Marvel.com has this to say about the MCU Loki's powers: quote:Loki possesses strength, durability, and longevity far superior to humans. The most powerful sorcerer in all of Asgard, Loki’s magical abilities include astral projection, shape-shifting, hypnosis, molecular rearrangement, energy blasts, levitating, conjuration, cryokinesis, telekinesis and teleportation. In addition, Loki can connect to others telepathically and see into their memories, mystically imbue objects, and create rifts between dimensions. https://www.marvel.com/characters/loki/on-screen I can't remember ever seeing him fly, specifically, but then again I pretty much erase Thor movies from my memory as soon as I've seen them.

The fight choreography in this show is asssssssssssss Or hell, any action scenes at all. Them trying to get to the ark at the end of the episode looked incredibly off, presumably because they were standing on a small set that they had to keep turning around in to move 'forward'. Also just having the guards run at them and randomly attack them looked goofy as all hell

Yeah but from the perspective of any given iteration/variant, it's functionally erasing all traces they existed as a distinct entity. It's editorial pruning of inconvenient story developments. From the extratemporal perspective of the TVA, it's hitting "undo" on a scene that got away from you. Jetrauben fucked around with this message at 23:29 on Jun 23, 2021 |

Yea, that was the best Doctor Who episode I've seen in ages. Also the screen rant guy was correct that the TVA goons are all varients. That also fits with my thinking that the majority of deviants are just regular people who chose left when they were meant to go right The story has been moving really fast I was confused when I saw this was only episodes 3. In the train, when Loki was singing, when he wasn't doing it in english, what was he singing in? Old Norse?

I don’t think anything is undone though, beyond the variant being extinguished from that point on. If show Loki got bopped in episode 4, episodes 1 to 3 and his events and actions there would still have happened. It’s basically just killing someone without leaving a body behind. Loki got freaked about finding his ticket after the annoying guy got erased in episode 1, that variant’s actions had still taken place. To say that erase everything about them and everything they ever were goes a bit far I think. I like the visual symbolism raised about the erasers though, that’s pretty cool and not something I’d picked up on.

Though Loki would totally wanna bang himself. Ladytron's FB page said their song True Blue appeared in this episode but I watched twice and didn't hear it. I figured it would be in the opening scene but nope.

Yeah but Variants usually also have had their iteration of the timeline annihilated/reset, which is why it strikes me on the symbolism of wiping out their traces. Of course, "time" also gets squishy in extratemporal spaces. That said I meant the eraser-thing is more a symbolic than textual reality.

I seriously resent the fact that we're only getting three more episodes. This kind of mini-series format doesn't work well. DD/JJ/LC/IF were ideal in terms of length — maybe they had some filler content or even a filler episode or two, but by the end of each one you felt satisfied. I really feel like this one will feel more like an appetizer by the end, with no entrée following it.

It was obvious when we got to Kilgraves 7th escape or DD randomly having to take time out to save a child from Ninjas that they were just cramming poo poo in to make up runtime. I think part of it is the D+ shows are made by movie folk, and it kinda shows. They are really tight stories, whereas TV can go on more detours and spend more time fleshing out side characters and on world building. Not a bad thing necessarily, but I watched Wandavision in one day and I think that sort of binging session is really the right format for these shows.
