A shitty post? This calls for a dance of deduction.
So I had my first "authentic MMO experience" in FFXI. On the third mission instead of using a Trust I partied up with someone. It was a lot more fun with some nice banter. But due to them being a much higher level than me I got no experience for kills.

Maybe its nostalgia speaking but I can't remember a MMO soundtrack that was as memorable for me as FFXI. FFXIV has some cool boss themes but otherwise doesn't come close.

EQ has the next most memorable ones, I guess. WoW I can barely remember any of the tracks, they were more ambient although there was some good stuff.

Treadmill? What's that? Is that some kind of cake?

Definitely one of the best tracks in XIV. Some of the night themes from ARR are great as well. I find most have less personality than XI tracks though. And I don’t care for most of the boss music as I’m not into that over-the-top style.

FFXIV's music is great but I totally understand liking FFXI's music better; The music in that game is atmospheric but still good at getting stuck in your head, so it's a different vibe from XIV where the music is usually attention-grabbing.

I think it kind of relates to what MMOs used to be vs what they are now. Older MMOs really focused on world building, now they focus on specific events like dungeons and bosses and are a bit more action focused, and the soundtracks reflect that in both games.

I played FFXI for like 8 months last year and absolutely loved it, probably one of the best MMO experiences I’ve had in a long time. I like quests that are not straightforward, a sense of danger, not being able to mow down tons of enemies effortlessly, and complex gearing systems though and it plays right into that.

I'd have to agree that FFXI and FFXIV probably have the best music overall as far as MMOs go.

DAoC and UO are the most sentimental to me, though.

Its cool but its very low-key, that's basically some chillwave beats to work to.

I'm pissed that MMOs do NOT like the concept of a person just using a single knife. It's always dual-wielded daggers.

Yeah I like I said, its really good, but its extremely chill and subdued. Its a step up from WoW's ambient themes, but its not quite to FFXI's level of fully composed arrangements.

I can hum the FFXI themes, I guess you could hum Coerthas but it'd be pretty simple and repetitive.

Your POL ID/PW and SE ID/PW are separate and you need to put both into the POL executable yes

personally, i like when soundtracks are so good they grab your attention :v:

i think i posted about this before but, from what BGM i heard of wow it's all real good BGM, but it's still just BGM. meanwhile back in warcraft 2 tho, the music was hype. it pumped you up. it was a part of the game, rather than a background to it, if that makes sense. ff14 achieves the same thing in a decent number of places/instances, and that puts it way above most games, and easily above any mmo i've played so far in the music department.

the only game that got soundtrack down just plain better, imo, is monkey island 2. and sure, ff14's music isn't as consistently great as MI2, but MI2 has ~2h of soundtrack while ff14 has like 20 at this point lol

For the most part yes until you realize that you are suppose to create a new account and copy and paste your POL assigned username and password into that field. It isn't legendarily bad or anything but it could have been done more user-friendly.

I probably woulda ended up no-lifing this game instead of EQ2 back in the day, but I had apparently used different usernames for different subservices or some poo poo and couldn't be hosed to figure it all out. Made me realize that it's important to make things as smooth as possible so you don't end up losing the "drunk dumbass who got the urge to jump back into an mmo at 3 AM" market lol

It wasn’t that bad but I remember the account site for FFXIV being janky and weird, too.

Now imagine it takes you about 40 hours of real, honest, work to get to that point.

FFXI is a good game now. I'm not even qualifying it, I just straight up enjoy the game. The UI is dogshit, but other than that it's a dang good video game, even if you play basically entirely on your own.

Besides the UI, the other two things I would change about FFXI, is the Limit Break quest lines not being necessary to level up, and balance melee combat to not be so relentlessly slow; missing attacks is too common. Game would be 10/10 the perfect MMO otherwise.
