^^^ I cast counter spell I'm not a Catholic so my saints knowledge is decidedly lacking, but the bit I know mostly glorifies misery and sacrifice in the name of the church. On the one hand that could be used as a brace during bad times, but I kinda feel like the suffering of the saints was more likely to be invoked to quiet down rabble rousers unsatisfied with the social order Maybe I'm wrong?

Folk saints are specifically not beatified by the church and were sometimes actively suppressed, like the dog saint I posted who was a patron of infants from like 1200(?) to 1930 or so. Are saints just reskinned minor deities cause my mom insists on treating them like that even though they're explicitly not and are considered ultra pious members of the church that god gave a hand to and now happen to be dead What I mean is how pervasive is straight up paganism masquerading as christianity? If you want the straight Catholic answer it's no. Not one bit. You pray to Saints but you're not asking them for anything you're asking them to petition God for you. If I need help making a shoe I pray to the saint of cobblers who is really loving good at praying to God for cobblers and I get super charged on holy cobbler juice.

A good part of the reason catholicism took hold and became so widespread was a shameless willingness to incorporate whatever made the locals more accepting. If what the people want are personal gods who will intercede on their behalf with the major pantheon, cool, give em saints. If they need minor gods to fill out the pantheon of your monotheistic religion, give em angels. Whatever, who gives a poo poo.
