Nah it's stock other than an ECU flash. I don't mind it I presume it's not hurting anything...? I guess if it damages the muffler I can always put the stock pipe back on LOL.

Absolute worst case scenario, you over heat the cat(s). So continuous overrun for years and years could damage the catalytic converters but you would really really have to try.

In terms of the bike, the functionality is normal. You just don't distinctly hear it through the stock exhaust.

What do you all think about short trips in cars like these? I know the conventional wisdom is to do 15 minutes or more to let things come up to temperature, but I live close (5-10 minutes) to many of my most frequent destinations. So far, if I'm taking the 911, I'll leave early and drive a bit extra. I have other cars I can use but how strict do I really need to be? I read some things about it insinuating that if you drove it hard once a week it would kinda un-do some of the short trip damage (water in the oil?).

Also, should adjusting the exhaust tip position be something I attempt in my garage? Seems like the one clamp has some adjustment play to it, but could be all rusted out and/or inaccessible without the rear bumper off, which might be beyond my project scope and aptitude. Can an exhaust shop or general mechanic tackle something like that or is it specialist only? My local specialist is booked out until August, so, lmao.

Here it is covered in pollen. The night blue metallic is really beautiful, deep sparkle. Interior is gray with night blue painted trim accents. I wanna swap out the exhaust tips for the quad tips but it looks costly! Otherwise it’s perfect. I was shopping for a S model but this one really stuck with me.

Yes this is quite right. As long as you let the engine come up to temp and burn off moisture/fuel on a regular (say weekly) basis you can take all the short trips you want. I daily drove my 987 in the city for years, including many short 2-3 mile trips, and it was fine

Only way to save money on that I saw when looking for a key was to find one that was blank for less and then hope the dealer would program it for you. Either way it is not cheap.

Get a text late yesterday afternoon from a friend of mine. She asked, totally out of the blue, hey, have you ever thought of renting your 911 for a day? It's (husbands) birthday and he would be so surprised. He's always wanted a porsche. I'd love to pick him to take him to dinner to back?"

She's a total sweetheart and pulled me a solid a few months so I told her I'd call her. She was soooo nervous and wanted to ask for a couple weeks but was scared to, so I said "Nothing to be scared/nervous of, the worst I'd say no, and, by the way, the answer is no I won't rent it to you for the night." Of which she of course understood and even hesitated asking,

But then I said no, I won't rent it but I'd lend it to you for a couple hours. She super excited, holy poo poo. Anyhow we make plans and give her the conditions. And told her it's for sale too.

Super excited and came over to my house about 1 hour later to pick it up and take her husband to dinner. Arrives, absolutely dolled up and ~gorgeous~. <Side: she is a 40ish mom, fresh cropped short hair black hair, very, very attractive looks and was dressed to kill. A total a middle aged knock out and looked right at home in the 911. Except wearing sneakers because she said no way in hell would she drive it in heels. Very astute>.

Took her for a quick 5 min orientation drive where I showed her how things worked and made her drive back, including using reverse. Send her on her way.

Get a call 10 minutes later

"Umm, hey, waiting for (husband) to come outside but the check engine light is on - is that normal?"

No, it is not. I've literally never had the CEL trip the entire time I've owned the car.

Is the temperature OK? Yep. Any other lights? Nope. Is it running well? Yeah, perfect. Literally just drove it home and the light turned on as I pulled up.

Well poo poo. :(

Sorry sweetheart, I have no idea what it is and I can't risk stranding you guys (15 min, mostly highway drive to restaurant). It's *probably* nothing, but I can't let you risk it. Better come back.

So she comes back and now I feel terrible. Meet them outside, her husband was still in shock, but at least they got a 10 minute burn. He told me his mouth was slackjawed as he thought she bought it as a birthday gift. I joked that it's probably not terribly likely now :lol:

I pull it back in the garage but it does indeed seem to be running fine.

Now, to find my OBD2 reader and see what tripped it. Hoping it's nothing too serious.

It's fine for short trips. Do it all the time. I just don't walk on it at all until I see it's actually warmed up and I let it warm up in the driveway for the better part of a minute before I drive it, but that's me.

I'm not sure what the problem is with your exhaust but something is fucky. A general could potentially look at that and probably figure it out. I wouldn't be too worried about a porsche-centric guy unless the body work *does* need to come off then I'd be a little cautious, but that's just me.

RE: Keys - I found an eBay auction that included codes for $156 so I bought two. Now I just have to find a locksmith who can cut them.

e: you might want to look into mesh inserts for the front radiator grilles, especially if you're looking to bring the car to the track. They pick up rocks and debris like nobody's business

That being said I bought this car without a PPI due to the sellers location and distance from reputable shops. We did multiple whatsapp video calls and I had a decent amount of pictures. Also had a friend in the area test drive it and look it over, he's not a car guy but better than nothing. Even with that we had a big surprise at the post-purchase inspection I just got home from...

Appears the car has a nice set of Bilstein PSS10B16? installed which might explain the ground clearance issues.


Car checked out great other than shot tires and a leaking washer fluid tank, both I was aware of. Clutch is making a little noise but barely noticeable and tech said drive it until it starts to bug you.

Definitely looking into mesh inserts for the radiators, will probably add when I put in the third radiator.


edit: I also talked with the dealership he had it serviced at, 3.5 hours away, where he brought it in every six months to have everything checked over.

You guys were really on it with the Cerakote recommendation for the headlights. Any thread recommendations for exhaust tips and then removing the soot from the surrounding paintwork? I have tried metal polishes and steel wool in the past but I've never gotten results like the cerakote on the headlights...

I think I will first attempt an oil change, then see if I can adjust the tips at all. Apparently there is some play in the clamp that attaches the tip to the muffler as well as the mounting bracket for the muffler to the frame, although I will likely not attempt to mess with the latter.

Some pics from my day at PECLA:



First room is the shop there, where they work on cars that get driven at PECLA as well as on some stuff that's much more special. That's a full carbon 935.
Second is a picture from the viewing platform, overlooking a portion of the track, skidpad, as well as the kickplate. That's the Taycan 4S my wife drove and the GTS 4.0 I drove.

Overall, I had a great time. I chose the Cayman GTS 4.0 because I was considering buying one as my first brand new car. I was going to do it/European Delivery, but then COVID hit last year and threw a wrench in those plans, so I ended up backing out.

First, the driving experience. It's split up in to a few parts: an autocross, a launch control launch, time on the skid pad, time trying their kickplate, and finally some time on their track. With COVID, they've moved from doing the day with an instructor in the car with you to more of a lead/follow approach, with the instructor showing you things and then you following behind, listening to them over the radio. Overall I thought it worked great.

Autocross was first for me, and I was able to be the first car out, so got a few extra runs in. Calling it autocross is maybe a bit generous, as there's only a few cones for a slalom at the beginning, a sweeping right turn, a quick straight, a quick S turn, and then you come to a stop/come around again. It's mainly there to get a feel for the car, learn how to use the launch control, and get the instructor familiar with you. Once I got a few runs in, I got to move to the next part, the launch control area.

The launch control area is set up as a lead/follow again, with the instructor giving you a quick out/back introduction to the area, then you doing a launch control start a few hundred feet behind the instructor who's doing the same. I got up to about 105 or so on the straight, then you brake and go in to a turn modeled after the Carousel. Kind of brief.

Next was the wet skid pad, which is just a giant skid pad that's constantly wet with sprinklers. Here, you get to try drifting around, with the traction control on/off. It was my first time ever trying something like this outside of a snowy parking lot and was probably my favorite part of the day.

Kick plate is next, which is similar to the above, except you drive towards a kickplate that randomly kicks your car left/right while you're driving 20-30mph, with the idea being that you get progressively faster as you get better at catching the spin.

Finally, you get to do some lead/follow with the instructor on the track for 4-5 laps.

Overall a fun experience overall, but not necessarily one I feel I have to repeat over and over again.

It was awesome, and pretty much lived up to all of the glowing reviews calling it one of the best cars Porsche makes. I felt immediately at home since it's so similar to my old 981, except with additional grunt and an awesome sounding engine. I drove the PDK, which was the right thing to do there. I was also trying to decide between the GTS/GT4/Spyder, and think I'd probably go for the GTS. I drove the GTS much harder than I'd ever be able to drive anything on the road and I know I wasn't even close to its limits. In all honesty, I didn't come away with the feeling that I absolutely needed to buy anything and I'm still loving the 993 I picked up late last year. Sounds like you had a ton of fun. If you enjoyed it I find in the car instruction WAY better than lead/follow. I get way too much pucker factor. You could see if a local track in Denver has anything where you can hire someone to help you flog your car. The in car instruction at the Porsche track was amazing.

That kick plate was the most fun for me, but I eventually had to stop because my back started to hurt.

I only know this because the prior owner of my 335xi used to do a lot of instruction for them and bought an M3 after a year because the 335 wasn't enough. I feel like I'm in a weird automotive place. I love driving my 993 on the street, but I'm not sure how much I want to flog it on the track, and I kind of miss my old 981 for that. At the same time, the 981 felt like overkill for the street, and every time I crashed it over Philly potholes/was stuck in traffic, I kept on thinking that the only time it made sense/wasn't wasted was when I was autocrossing/tracking it. Look around and see if there's a company that rents spec miatas or something, I know there's a few on the East coast and a friend runs one in the midwest. There has got to be something similar out there. A few of the track day organizations have teamed up with rental companies as well so all you do is show up and drive. Dad's done it for a few SCCA race weekends and a few friends without space or mechanical aptitude do it a few times a year.

Went for a short drive yesterday, not much traffic and beautiful weather.

That thing is really clean, I love the seat inserts. Remember looking at a company that makes those in a ton of colors and patterns but can't remember what it was now.

Open track at the local kart/drift track Saturday. I'll go out for a bit so I can safely get a feel for the car on edge and in a slide, was hoping for rain but it doesn't look like I'm going to be that lucky.
