That's raw though, there's usually a systematic bias in weather model surface outputs. Latest calibrated data for Monday has a median of 109F with an IQR 104-111, max range is 93 (lol) to 114 (also lol).

Can't wait till we're getting once-per-100000-year heatwaves like we got once-per-100000-year rainfall totals in Harvey. Once it happens it's not allowed to happen again until the next interglacial.

Uh oh, time for the stats nerds to swoop in and explain why actually it is totally expected as a function of the naming to get sixteen 500 year floods in 20 years

Because we can.

in 2017 we had a "1000 year" rain event and a 100 year event three weeks later and they're still fixing hosed up bridges. ~$100m in damage to an area with a population of ~10,000.

this is in the "most climate resilient" region of north america (upper great lakes)

I know that I sometimes can't tell if my memory of childhood outdoors stuff is correct or if I just wasn't paying attention back then.

I suppose it doesn't help that I moved when I was 10, so it's hard to know if I showed up when things were "normal" or if the first few years in the new place were sorta "fluke" years.

Sitting in the Costco food court unmasked, Bible in hand, reading my favorite Psalms to my five children: Abel, Bethany, Carlos, Carlos, and Carlos.

The saddest part of The Once and Future World is where he talks about how successive generations see the environment of their youth as the baseline, even though it's degrading significantly every generation. I bet kids born in the last few years will fondly remember the three fireflies they saw one night as indicative of a world of natural riches and wonder

Yeah I did the same thing for my cats because one is older and sicker and one is a long haired black floof. After the first day of this event overperformed I just couldn't imagine them getting through a 110F day very well.

Seattle is running five degrees hotter so far today compared to yesterday, and yesterday's high was 102F.

Get that champagne ready, the all-time high is just a couple hours away.

Edi: haha Portland is running ~8F ahead of yesterday, when they hit 108F. Christ they could conceivably hit 120F tomorrow what a disaster.

Model temperature output, especially from the GFS, often ends up in fantasy ranges. Very odd to see it validate verbatim honestly.

Yeah it definitely isn't something I would choose, but I think it was mdemone who was talking about it in the other thread as being imminently necessary to prevent the worst feedbacks kicking off more or less immediately. It's just another broke brain flailing around helplessly.

In terms of immediately constructive advice, I spent a few hours listening to lectures on the bible eightfold path and I feel a lot better somehow, so maybe give that a shot if you're thinking of melting down like I was.

Lmao it’s hot and getting hotter but let’s be real it’s not going to be a wet bulb and while I think sadly there will be some deaths I don’t think it’ll get to triple digits

The most worrying thing to me is if it doesn’t cool off below 80 tonight
