He plays for the dreamers that forgot how to dream, and the lovers that forgot how to love.
Something about Luz is that she's sometimes referred to as a bit mary-sueish with the whole "Doing every track at once!" thing (my brother thinks that a bit, he still likes her though) but I disagree because it's clearly not effortless - she is obviously putting everything she has into her studies, you just need to extrapolate from her dialog - she figured out the invisibility Glyph by inspiration from one of Lilith's history books. She's reading everything she can get her hands on and experimenting with glyphs all over the place to figure out how she can replicate the spells of the less obvious tracks. She started off being kind of unfocused in her ambitions, but Lilith and Eda's minds and experiments are feeding back into hers and vice-versa, accelerating her progress exponentially on top of her somewhat obsessive interest in the Boiling Isles.

Luz, Eda & Lilith do seem to have basically formed a pretty nice Earth-style 3-witch coven. They've even got the triumvirate of Mother (Eda), Maiden (Luz) and...The Other One (Lilith).

since the Voltron thread died back when the show ended I'm just gonna say that, having finished it this weekend, Lance ended up being one of my favourites and I'm sad that the resolution to his story was so lackluster compared to everyone else on the team. I mean, I suppose you could say they were going for a Cincinnatus type resolution with him becoming a farmer but to me it landed that he was severely traumatized by Allura's sacrifice and he's holding himself back now because of it. In a way I guess that actually makes it feel more realistic but I still feel for the poor guy :smith:

The thing that makes Luz special is that she's really not special at all. What she's doing in terms of learn and casting magic is something that pretty much anyone, human or witch, could have done. Luz, a human, figured it out because... that's what humans do. We don't have wings, hooves, paws, fur, fangs or claws. But we can observe the natural world and figure out how to make clothes and shoes. We can use wood, stone and eventually metal to make daggers, spears and armor. We can figure out aerodynamics and fly that way.

Luz doesn't have a special "heart-bile" organ like Witchlings do. But she can observe spells and spot that glyph and do magic that way, the human way.

Plus, Eda, Lilith and Luz are on their to pretty much butt-loving Emperor Belos's "magic-sealing" because absolutely nothing prevents any other witch from using Luz's methods to access powers and otherwise sealed away.

Exploration is ill-advised.
The interesting bit is also that Principal Bump started off as hostile but has kinda done a 180 on Luz mostly because she's a genuinely dedicated student when sufficiently motivated, and I imagine after spending centuries teaching it's a nice change of pace to have a non-traditional but dedicated student. There also seems to be a homeschooling argument early on, but it soon ends up pointing out that having both home tutoring and institutional schooling working in tandem is the best option for a student with special needs.

Bump is interesting because he never really came off as hostile to Luz per se. He banned her from the school initially because she caused a lot of disruption with the "Abomination" bit and because she wasn't a student. When Eda approached him with the idea of enrolling Luz he was completely fine with it - though he did leverage the situation to make Eda clean up the various messes she made as a student (and let's recall that at that time Eda was a fugitive criminal on whom the Emperor had placed a massive bounty). Even though Bump is fairly traditional, he's also fair-minded enough that a good argument will get him to change his mind on things - as with the students in the Detention Track and letting Luz herself study all the Tracks.

Bump clearly hated it when Odalia forced him to expel Gus, Luz and Willow (and Odalia best watch her step after that. Bump is probably one of the very last people you'd want as an enemy)

I felt like Bump being willing to mix up the exclusive course tracks might have been because it's implied he's been around much longer than the coven system, given the Emperor's only been around for like, 50 years. To him, it might be less of a major change and more going back to the way they used to do it.

the real adventures jonny quest talk gave me a hankering to check out the series again. in episode 2, where they introduce Surd, and boy, do i have things to say. here's a quick overview of the plot: Dr. Surd had some evil plan to release nerve gas in a city, but was stopped at the last minute by Race. twenty years later, he decides to relaunch his plan to release the nerve gas.

- first off, while the show is clearly more mature than many of the cartoons at the time, it still seems to fall prey to childish plot contrivances. for example, surd had supposedly died during this time, and that's what everyone is led to believe. but jonny, jesse, and hadji manage to deduce that that's not only a lie, but they also find out where he's actually located. now, i would have been fine even with this for the most part, if it wasn't for the fact that they literally discover all this within the span of 5 minutes (not an exaggeration! no time lapse or nothing. literally under 5 minutes!).
- as if that wasn't bad enough, when they do find out where he's at (a mental institution), they break in and break him out, ALL UNDER A FEW HOURS. like as if they were just going to the store for some milk or something

this may seem like nitpicking but i was really annoyed cause i expected better, and i HATE errand running type writing like this. stuff like this, such as the casino trip with finn and rose is one of the many things that bugged me about the last jedi.

but anyway, enough of the negativity. let's get to the good poo poo:

- the show is much more hardcore than i remember. i had forgotten how surd turned into a quadruplegic ( i thought it was from the nerve gas) but no, it was actually cause he was shot multiple times (and they showed it too)
- i may have to think about this one for a bit, but i think this is one of the few times in american cartoon history that they actually show a character getting dying off screen. it was a character who inhaled some nerve gas and they show his corpse lying on the floor, eyes bugged out, mouth agape and drooling , etc. and i thought they were going to pull the "we've taken him to the hospital so it's cool, he'll get better soon" trick, but nope. that sucker was announced dead as a doornail.

also, somehow i forgot but they changed the entire cast in the second season EXCEPT frank welker as surd, which i'm glad, cause he fits the character PERFECTLY.

There were some off-screen deaths, but the implications of how they died would have NOT flown if they showed(elephant goring, ceiling crush, slaughtered and eaten by fish people, etc.). The show was DEFINENTLY more hard-core than most anything else on TV cartoons at the time.

I always found the dead pianist ghost one chilling. Both, the tentacle orb and how the villain "dies"(he apparently lived, but suffered a catatonic mental breakdown) where the ghost drags him into the opened secret room in a wall with the VERY realistic looking decayed pianist woman corpse and sealing it shut.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Some thinking on The Owl House has led to a sudden theory.

A consistent thing about the beings known as 'demons' on the Boiling Isles is that they seem to be paper tigers with egos to match; big bounties on them, but not a lot of people take them seriously. (or actually pay out the bounties) Most are tiny, silly, and not surprisingly powerful to contrast it. However, no one's particularly objecting to the idea that a demon is something powerful to be feared, just some are more powerful and fearsome than others- but I don't think we've seen any. Hell, even seems like runaway/orphaned Palismans are a more powerful bloc on the Boiling Isles.

Another thing we know is the whole Coven system and the Emperor are very recent things, relatively. (50 years isn't even that much for humans) And we've seen evidence that at least one demon was a figure of great power and renown in the area, and had access to advanced magic and great resources. Seems the conclusion is possibly that demons were the most powerful entities on the Boiling Isles not long ago, but were beaten out relatively recently. (given the apparently blase attitude of the residents to the current regime, long lifespans and strong attitudes of Social Darwinism, I imagine that regime changes aren't an infrequent thing to them)

I'm curious if under Luz's positive influence, the Clawthornes are going to become more and more united as a beacon of positivity and good relationships to the Isles in direct contrast to the Blights becoming more and more fractured as Amity pulls away from them. She'd be a direct contrast to Bellos too, one bringing people together with kindness and good leadership, the other deliberately dividing them to force them under his thumb.

Ok I’m curious, what’s an example of Voltron somehow making things BLEAKER than the original anime?

In one episode Zarkon's cousin or nephew or something familial invites him to an evil feast. In GoLion he rolls out a carpet of dead slaves for Zarkon to walk on while in Voltron the slaves are still alive and in agony as Zarkon trails across them.

Another episodes shows a bunch of women with babies. In GoLion they're just normal families but in Voltron they're all widows and orphans.

Romelle and Bandor's older brother is swept out to sea, never to be seen again and their father goes insane and gets imprisoned while raving while both just straight die in GoLion.

Coran's son's evil clone gets imprisoned while bemoaning his horrid existence rather than GoLion's usual "he just dead". And Coran's real family is lost in the multiverse meaning he now has to anguish over their fate rather than having closure of any sorts.

So how does Voltron handle Takashi/Sven’s death and the Princess taking over as Blue Lion’s pilot?

Also how much of the original GoLion did Voltron actually cover (that is, did it make it all the way to the end)? I know they added a second season where they grafted on footage from a completely unrelated anime made by the same studio.

Finally, how faithful are the later western remakes and are any of them worth watching (I’ve heard mixed reviews)?

I think I know the answer to this one. Like in usual fashion, no deaths means Sven is hospitalized. And really fortunately for Voltron there's a guy later on in the series who looks exactly like Sven (his brother?) who they use as Sven returning.

Yeah, in the Japanese version the other Sven was the original’s twin brother.

McTimmy

Sven was taken to a hospital planet (Ebb?) which was later conquered offscreen by Zarkon in like, a single line I had to have pointed out to me. When Romelle gets captured by Lotor again and thrown into the PIT OF SKULLS she finds Sven wandering around as a crazy cave man.

Voltron: Defender of the Universe goes all the way through GoLion's footage, though in the endgame though all the villains escape because of censorship.

Vehicle Voltron is concurrent or something and takes footage from Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. It's barely connected to the original beyond a few small details because it's dealing with its own incredibly bland galactic war. Vehicle is seriously boring and just not worth watching.

There's a movie where the two teams sort of team up to fight like, a fifth fake Voltron.

Defender of the Universe got a Second Season which was outsourced for new animation. Pidge is literally never the correct color in the new footage. Season 2 has some decent moments and hilarious parts since the Doom Robots can actually be shown as robots blowing up now plus there's some cool-looking Robeasts.

3rd Dimension is 90s' CG and ugly even for the era. But dammit, it's funny, it's charming, the fights are brutal, there's something resembling continuity and the voice actors are knocking it out of the park. They even have Tim Curry being 1000% Tim Curry in it.

Voltron Force is bland and weird and dull. Switching the core-machine of Voltron to make new powers is cool but the plots are just so dull which is a shame because they were clearly trying to make something of the story beats and past series with this one.

Legendary Defender is the only real reboot, 3rd Dimension and Voltron Force are both sequels that don't acknowledge anything past the original existing (beyond I think a single mention of Chipp.) LD goes off in its own directions and doesn't really have much directly in common beyond names and archetypes.

drrockso20

Legendary Defender is also very clearly a show that came about because someone had an idea for an original concept but couldn't sell it without wrapping it up in a preexisting IP's still raw and bloody skin, there's just so much blatant disdain for both the show it's supposed to be a reboot of and of the overall genre it's supposed to be in

Dairugger itself is one of the most boring animes I’ve ever watched and has way too many characters to keep track of. I don’t know if it gets better later on but I wound up abandoning it after just a few episodes.

One thing that's interesting is that despite the name, the "Blights" aren't the Malfoys from Harry Potter. In some ways they remind me almost as much of the Weasleys. Edric and Emira come off as slightly more mean-spirited prankster like Fred and George (And they like Luz, Gus and Willow in their own pranky way). Alador is kind of a "magic nerd" like Arthur Weasley who seems like he much prefers just messing around in his workshop coming up with cool abominations. He also seems like someone who'd be fascinated by the implications of Luz's "paper magic" - especially with the idea of combinations. Alador also seem like the best person to tell them more about King's Island Guardian.

The one in the family hostile to Luz, Gus and Willow was Odira. If anything, she's the one most likely to have the rest of the family pull away from her.

It's also interesting to note that none of the Blights, even Odira, seem especially bigoted against Luz the human. Odira's quarrel with Luz (and Gus and Willow) was that they were "distracting" Amity from excelling in school.
