I know some folks who can somehow balance being big into games and having a normal* life but it ain't me chief

I just went on Reddit to ask a tech support question, figured it couldn't hurt. Blows my mind that your first post in every subreddit gets you a message from a bot that goes "hey read the rules. if you just broke the rules, uh, don't". And that comes up as a notification in the top right, but it doesn't even show the message there, it just puts a [1] next to the messages button inside the notifications dropdown. It's not like it's a huge deal but everything about this stupid website has some wonky design choice like that.

People on Reddit don't know poo poo about tech and they usually downvote the people who actually do know poo poo so they leave. Though if you have a weird plant or item and you don't know what it is, there are subs that will identify it within minutes.

It's not like it's a huge deal but everything about this stupid website has some wonky design choice like that. In making one of my first posts on reddit yesterday, I was consistently just totally confused by the lack of basic common sense stuff on the site. To the point where I couldn't figure out if I was just missing something, or it was really that poorly designed. You make a post and it has a section for posting text, then images, then links, great...but really it's making you choose one of the three . This isn't clear at all, so most of my post just wasn't there. And you can't preview what your post is actually going to look like. So I am actually googling how to preview, so I don't make another botched post and I'm finding 20 different answers and an outside site, dedicated to copy/pasting your post to preview it it. Ultimately I landed on a reddit post requesting the feature and a Reddit employee responded "We would love to have that feature but unfortunately it's impossible" lol. I mean for all I know, all of this is stuff I missed and it's not actually as bad as it seems and I am just a newb. but it's bar none the worst first impression I have had for any sort of forum on the internet in my entire life. I never have trouble figuring this stuff out but tying to post on reddit just makes me feel like a boomer. I'm sure SA is sort of unwieldy for new users too, but goddamn it's like reddit doesn't even consider basic QOL stuff every other site on earth has solved and it's somehow the biggest forum in history.

It's not really a forum, it's a content agregator where you can post youtube style comments underneath, only it's worse than youtube since the comments can branch endlessly, making linear group discussion impossible

Didn’t reddit start without a comment function? I think it was supposed to be just a list of links and pictures, ranked by voting.

All questions go into the questions mega thread. Only fan art can get an individual post. Mega threads are the loving worst idea for a site set up like Reddit.

It's kind of amazing that a site that is so "free speech" oriented that the rest of the internet and news outlets had to intervene to get them to get rid of creepshots of kids, has the most insane list of weird rules in every subforum.
|
# ? Jun 27, 2021 09:09 |

Its because the free speech angle combined with making each subreddit its own community means everything is self moderated, and so is its own little fiefdom, so you have everything from illegal porn to puritan absolutism on the same site, and no one every looks to see if a given subreddit is in line with whatever values because free speech. Kinda reminds me of one book, I wanna say it was one of The Culture books, had a society that was 100% free, which lead to forming smaller societies with their own rules which ranged from utopias to places dedicated to one absolute dictator getting his rocks off torturing people to death, and the only time the latter was dealt with was when someone escaped to ask for help because otherwise it was assumed to be voluntary

I heard of /r/PLASTT today. It stands for pussy, legs, rear end, smile, toenails and tits, and is comprised solely of pictures that show all six features. Who thinks of this poo poo? It's right up there with that ridiculous acronym with "the-sun-shining-through-her-dress" etc. Checking out a list of porn subreddits looking for other examples, I'm mostly just appalled by how badly they need some consolidation and merging. Does reddit need /r/barelylegalteens and /r/legalteens? /r/collegeamateurs and /r/collegesluts? /r/boobs and /r/boobies?

Of course people doing that might be why there are so many lovely clone subreddits.

If a redditor gets in a spat over the rules with the mods of /r/animefeet, he can just go off and make /r/trueanimefeet or /r/animefeet2 or /r/extrasluttyanimefeet or whatever as a "new, better" porn subreddit without that stupid rule he hates, where he is the top mod and he has the power to make new stupid rules for other redditors to hate.

There are like 4 or 5 Seattle subreddits because each mod team kept being exposed as fascist despite the reason for the new sub was the last mod team was too fascist (or if memory serves, not interested in warning people about a literal rapist posing as a film director)

The stocks/crypto/investment subreddits are hugely popular, but looking at them they give terrible, terrible advice. They literally shame people who sell high and call them bitches and cowards. They even have terminology like "diamond hands" for people who never sell and "paper hands" for people who do. There's a huge sense of collective responsibility, like if you sell some stock you're plunging the price and screwing over other Redditors who have invested.

It's because if the suckers buy but never sell, it drives the price up so the actual scammers can sell theirs at a high price. Tell the suckers they're doing their part by HODLing (lol!!! Get it!!!!!) And they'll do your work for you Some rear end in a top hat started a red panda shitcoin and now these stupid shitheads are clogging up the #redpanda hashtag on twitter with their dipshit "TO THE MOON!!!! 🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀💎💎💎💎💎💎💎😊😊😊😊😊😊" garbage and drowning out people actually posting pandas. It's also REALLY obviously a ton of bots driving up engagement to try to drive up the price. I sincerely wish ill upon everyone involved

Yes this is how a pump and dump scheme works. Redditors were ironically smart in decentralising it so the SEC won't bother chasing it down.

(i was thinking this might be more of a historical distinction cause reddit in general has shifted a lot more towards OC over the last few years as concerns about revenge porn have grown and OC has become lucrative). It seems to be a mostly different population that posts on each sub (ie it seems like users either consider themselves amateurs or sluts) but the top posts on each sub are both from the type of now-common reddit babe account that posts the same content dozens of times on different subs (for example the top posts of the week on collegeamateurs right now are all from miniloona). in conclusion a lot of poo poo sucks about reddit and it can be madee fun of endlessly but IT IS STILL THE BEST PLACE ON THE INTERNET TO FIND PORN (other than of leaks it's not great for that!!!)
