nobody turned out for a big wet president because of his strong and consistent conservative values, they did it because he's a messy bitch who loves drama. desantis might get the nomination but he's no unbeatable powerhouse

I don't think we'll see a "Trump but Smart and Full Fash" candidate in 2024. It's too early in The Collapse for that.

You'll have 3 types of candidates in 2024 if Trump isn't running:
1) "We need to move past Trump, restore sanity" RINOs, maybe Romney and someone else, who are promptly humiliated on the debate stage despite millions of dollars from finance capital hedging.
2) Trumpist Grifters -- media figures, MTG, Gaetz other randos who try an fail to capture Trump Magic
3) Your mainline Republican shitheads, e.g. Ted Cruz, Rubio, Tom Cotton, Hawley, who promise to turn the heat up on China and talk about how Biden sucked, spending too much, cut and run etc etc

The best case scenario for a full fash president is DeSantis/Cotton and DeSantis falls in a manhole at some point in his presidency.

trump kind of understands how to run a business the way howard stern does. howard picked dumbasses who called into the show and were willing to give up their current careers for a shot in radio. normally not a good career change, but worth it for the stern show. and in a lot of cases stern picked people who had no other career prospects. but by doing so he got a lot of incompetent people who eventually learned to work in a way that made the show run

in exchange youre completely dependent on him and willing to take a lot of abuse to make the boss happy. like how trump made his former caddy scavino his media guy. there was no way scavino was going to get hired away to do anything else and thus trump had his complete loyalty

ironically, the difference between stern and trump is that a lot of hollywood people love or loved the howard stern show and have a lot of affection for the people on it. when stern decides to end the show everyone on it is going to have job offers just because other hollywood people will want to hear stories in addition to them having worked on a successful show. im sure people will want to hear trump stories, but they dont want the stink of failure that former trump employees will have

I have a feeling that a candidate’s personality or charisma or appearance won’t matter if they get the Trump endorsement — his base already sees a prissy, flabby elderly gossip as a muscular humanitarian genius no matter how much he babbles about being disrespected at the Russian Tea Room, so anyone else under his aegis would get the same kind of uncritical adulation for a wholly-fictional persona

That's because the presidency would be a downgrade for him. More work, less overall influence even if he gets direct control over certain poo poo. He's not running.

This is what worries me. Republican voters have proven time and time again that they'll vote for anyone with (R) next to their name. It doesn't matter if DeSantis or Cotton or whoever else doesn't have that Trumpy charm, but if one of them comes out of the primary on top those GOP voters will still show up.

Unless the RNC somehow ratfucks Trump and he makes a big enough stink about it, I guess.

yeah not enough attention gets paid to this

there's been a steady shift of rich suburban voters over to the dems but the gop hasn't paid a real price for it yet, outside of losing the house. the dereg poo poo is basically primed to keep this group loyal and it really doesn't seem to be working

it's not hard to see that if the gop nominates someone other than trump in 2024 that even desantis doesn't bring back enough to avoid a loss on par with mccain in 2008

Since 2008, at least, it's been a game of turnout. Trump somehow got these roaming masses of jackasses out to vote for him. A good indicator of how that'll affect the game going forward will be 2022. He won't be on the ballot then so that could lower their turnout (offset by voter fuckery of course).

yea the suburbs are very reliably turning blue as the old guard GOP die off, and younger voters move out of cities. If republicans wanted to win back the suburbs they'd need to 1) support gun control and 2) turn the racism and bigotry dial back down to being more subtle

but they aren't willing to do that so they're relying on rural voters and peeling off just enough city and suburban chuds to let them win states with large population centers, and energizing fresh new chuds who maybe didn't vote except when trump was on the ballot

whether it will be enough for them in 22 and 24, who knows?

Yeah that's a good point I suppose. The presence or absence of Trump just feels like a big wildcard over the whole thing, though if Trump handing out endorsements was more effective the 2018 midterms might have looked a little different.

Korean Boomhauer
Sep 4, 2008
most of trumps voting base probably doesnt even know what a midterm even is. a lot of them are only learning about it fairly recently when the GOP started unifying around the message of "biden is literally destroying america and the only way to stop america from ending and becoming socialist is to go to this little known but very very important election called a mid term"

Azathoth
Apr 3, 2001

trump endorsements matter for primaries but unless he's actually campaigning for them, doing rallies, that sort of thing, it doesn't move the needle much in a general election

that said, even in primaries, trump usually only endorses candidates who aren't facing serious challengers. he was definitely a kingmaker in some contests, but he usually avoids weighing in, even when there's one or more candidates that are literally running on supporting him
