I never read/participated in Homestuck, so I can only go off of what my friend who used to be a hardcore Homestuck has told me, and from what she's said, Dave Strider was the main inspiration for Gideon Nav. What that means I don't really know. M_Gargantua posted:I've been listening to Gideon on audible for my commute these past few days. Today I got to chapter 20, the tunnel siphoning scene. I remembered it was written well, but that quality plus the narration had me feeling like I should pause the thing and pull off because of how physically uncomfortable I was starting to feel at the descriptions of the pain. Hands tensing the on wheel feeling intense anxiety for our lass's predicament, even knowing exactly what happens already. A+ very good. The audiobooks are insanely good. Moira Quirk is an angel and she had better narrate Alecto as well. (she's also the former host of Nickelodeon's GUTS, for those familiar)

I mean Harrow as Rose is a bold choice but the dialog is pretty spot on

Which lands us in the wonderful world of Ianthe (Vriska).

Yeah I was mostly trying to find someone that Dave banters with so that's why I chose Rose. Figured some of Rose's dialogue could reasonably fit Harrow, but I totally welcome other's interpretations Edit: Kanaya might be a slightly better fit, honestly Happy Landfill fucked around with this message at 21:40 on Jun 11, 2021 |

I just saw the trailer for Scooby-Doo Meets Courage the Cowardly Dog and began listing a number of other possible crossovers in outraged disbelief, ending in "Gideon the Ninth." I was then forced to admit that this would actually be a great movie. Could Gideon Nav out-eat Shaggy Rogers? Could Harrowhark explain necromancy to Velma's satisfaction? Will Fred kiss a monitor lizard? At least Daphne is playing it safe for once and sticking close to her sickly new friend!

I read both books over the past few days, and I'm really glad I finally caught up with them. Maybe reading them back to back made Harrow the Ninth easier to digest, but I deeply enjoyed the stylistic choices there. Seeing second-person used well was a breath of fresh air, and disjointed non-linear narratives like this are some of my favorite stories to untangle. It's very much in the same vein as William Gibson's The Peripheral and Grant Morrison's Batman/Final Crisis. And actually, extensively revisiting the characters and setting of the first book made me think of Back to the Future Part II, remixed as a metal album and cranked to 11. I have to agree that one of the best aspects of these novels, that drove the momentum and kept me hooked, was how the mysteries inherent in the world-building are progressively revealed. Muir is masterful at this; I'll be anticipating her on the same level as Gibson even after Locked Tomb is done. (No pressure!)
