it's mm

supposedly the data shows they usually get around 70~80mm of rain in the month of june, but instead they got 70%/50mm within a few days which probably overwhelmed the system

If you're getting output from your window unit, just not much, it may just need to be recharged with refrigerant. Even if there is a leak you'll get better performance for a while.

You can take the cover off and see if you have a place to add refrigerant. If you do it's a cheap fix you can do yourself. Plenty of vids on YouTube for how to do it.

E: if anyone out west needs help trying to get some ac systems working or working better, send me a PM. I'm in Iowa so I can't help directly, but I have a maintenance background and know enough to be able to trouble shoot and repair most issues that an ac unit could have.

This is good advice and you can also do the same thing to your car if the AC isn't working well. My old rear end Nissan needed a top off last year for the first time and it made a world of difference.

Only thing is the cans of refrigerant are like 40-50 bucks

It's far easier to survive extreme cold than it is to survive extreme heat.

The entirety of Texas saw like about 115 people die from the cold that was more than a week event while BC is just now reporting 230 deaths (and they've haven't really gotten to look around for more) for couple of days of heat. Pretty conclusive which is worse

EPA data shows more americans die from cold related deaths than heat related deaths on any given year.

the trick is the cold kills in more routine boring ways, like killing the homeless or elderly or poor when they cant find heat overnight. while heat kills either workers or in big fancy events.

(also your texas numbers are far far lower than reality, especially if we count deaths from attempts to keep warm, like co poisoning)

I barely survived; it was 115°F for over 10 hours at my house, and the inside of the house was 100°F at 75% humidity. I had a tiny window a/c that's broken af but was able to keep my 'cool' room at 89°F through the worst of it. If it weren't for that janky-rear end window unit, me and my two cats would've surely croaked in that heat.

drat, that's scary

it’s also sparked a shitload of wildfires in BC

for example, the town of Lytton, which might ring a bell as the town which broke Canada’s all-time high yesterday, is currently on fire

drat, I had a bad feeling that those high temps and hot dry winds were going to spark wildfires.
That's the exact combination of weather that has Australian fire services putting out huge warnings and enacting fire bans.
I hope you get those fires under control soon and avoid what Australia went through in summer 2019/20, it was awful to live through.

I don’t know what it’s like elsewhere, but the Portland ban is just on setting them off and they’re still being sold (and even then you could just go across the river and buy them in Washington)

So it’s not going to amount to much beyond a way for cops to selectively harass teenagers is my prediction

Also a mea culpa for a few pages back when I said it wouldn’t be a triple digit heat death event. I look to be very wrong and I’m sad about that
