It's so weird. I felt the same about... The Simulation, I think? There were like 8 tracks, but from the first half only "Under the Gun" got me going.

The best song on that EP, though? "Silence the Echo". That was the song and solo that made me go "Thank gently caress Richardson is no longer in the band".

New At the Gates is good. It's more At the Gates. If you liked them before, you'll like them now!

Haven't checked out new Born of Osiris yet, probably do that later at the gym. I remember The Simulation took a bit to grow on me but eventually I wound up really liking some songs on that.

As someone who sorta liked At the Gates, I think I like more At the Gates as an idea than as a band. Because holy poo poo, compared to Carcass and Dark Tranquillity back then (or Insomnium for the last decade, at least), they were peak "Wait, that's it?! gently caress outta here with that basic AF nonsense".

Early At the Gates, like before Slaughter of the Soul is so much weirder and more interesting than DT or Insomnium ever have been.

Yeah, they pulled it together after the first few tracks. I'm also not the biggest BoO fan, so maybe *I* just needed to warm up to 'em

Fair, but that band was basically gone with Terminal Spirit Disease. Also, pound for pound, I don't think there's a better melodeath record than Winter's Gate. How can you make a 40 minute song slap so much?

I think DT and Insomnium are mega boring so different strokes I suppose.

Eighteen Visions just dropped a new single and high school me is stoked. Looks like they also released a couple covers recently, plus an EP from late last year, so I know what I'll be listening to at the gym tonight

Holy poo poo this is about as good as they’ve ever sounded to me. Was never a giant fan but occasionally put them on. Feeling this new one.

That recent EP is good. The album they released back in '17 is also surprisingly good (especially since it was their first release in over a decade)

Huh, I was just listening to Ascendancy yesterday and didn't know Trivium had anything new coming out but I'll take it. It's good, stylistically in line with their last couple albums but a little more aggressive.

I'm not all the way through it yet, but I'm going to go ahead and call the new LP from VCTMS my "Bad Taste Album of the Week". If you like the kind of noise VCTMS have made in the past, you'll dig this. But I'm also not rushing to tell all my friends how "good" the album is. It sounds like if two construction sites got into a fist fight and I'm very here for it

I'm one listen into the new EP from Structures and I'm diggin' it. No moments really jumped out during it, but I was also half-assing some stuff at work, so I need to listen more before I know if it's worth remembering. Regardless, good way to kill a few sets in the gym

e: also lol season of mist hosed up the first batch of vinyl for this album and accidentally pressed it using the instrumental master, so i now have an instrumental version of this album and a proper pressing on the way in 2 weeks

which is awesome cause my first thought after hearing their first single a few months ago was that this would be a super good instrumental album, so hey i got my wish

If you mean a 1/10, absolute garbo?

Very few beat AILD's 94 Hours.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WxGfjs0kvc

Just a complete turd-bucket of a song and breakdown. Something by Atreyu might compare in shittiness but I can't recall anything right now.

If you meant cream of the crop as far as breakdowns go? Probably something that doesn't feel crowbarred in.
