Struggling to read this any way but a common-sense debunking of the myth that the free market will naturally select what's good and safe without need for regulation. I mean, it's literally a man being okay with endangering his own son to save some money, and rationalizing it. The free market does not favor the better option, because it is more expensive, and people are not, it turns out, willing to pay that much more for safety when they don't think it'll be their problem.

Gosh they really want people to think the police have already been defunded, huh?

Cartoons today are about Scott Morrison's announcement about the national cabinet agreement on how to get out of the current state of lockdowns. How National Cabinet wants to ditch lockdowns and open borders as COVID vaccination rates rise (ABC)
Summary, there are four phases:
- Phase 1 is what Australia is in now but with less intake from overseas to help stop leaks from hotel quarantine (Morrison was not happy about this)
- Phase 2 through 4 is opening up more after enough Australians are vaccinated
- There are currently no targets or a clear plan for how to get from phase 1 to 2
- Scott Morrison used the words "new deal" quite a lot

Pope:

Most of Australia is in some form of lockdown.

what keeps happening to my clothes

Come to think of it this is in the same genre of joke as all those lazy "Here is a picture of X [blank space showing no X]" toons we know and love to hate. But because Kal isn't a hack just making the joke as an excuse to draw nothing he's made an actual good cartoon by drawing an empty street set up for a parade that hasn't come, which in a way is more empty of people than a white void would be. Thus concludes amateur art analysis with angepain

This does not make sense when, again, aggregate indicia also indicate improvements. The belief that things are worse is false. It remains false.

I love the mental gymnastics necessary to think state premiers are going to deliberately sabotage their own public health efforts to get at the PM.

My understanding is that authorities are finally catching on that the massive increase in wildfires across the nation are probably not helped by having mid-summer "everybody gets to play with explosives" celebrations, and have started actually restricting fireworks purchases.

Perhaps, but the news stories have been that fireworks prices are high due to supply issues.

Hasn't the U.S been experiencing a variety of supply issues leading to an increase in the prices of various goods (and a lot of conservative whining about inflation). Like the fact that everything is running on just in time delivery has made the whole thing fairly fragile.
