This past year I was in a class that dealt with a lot of literature around the American dream, and I got to witness a classmate who had been born in California (iirc) but had lived in Canada for the past ten years or so have a sudden epiphany and then minor crisis in class about the pledge of allegiance. Nice guy, but I think it kind of hit him all at once and he just went "oh no" and rambled a bit at us all for a few minutes. Edit, no wait, I'm mixing up classes. It all blends together when it's from home. This was the class on Nazi Germany literature. He suddenly saw parallels and it freaked him out a bit. I stopped saying the pledge in like third grade and stopped standing for it in sixth. Got sent to the principles office once by a sub over it in high school, principal laughed and sent me back to class. If this had been post Kaepernick I probably would have taken a knee.
