Okay, finally doing the draft. For the record, my picks:

Y/O: Takakeisho / Terunofuji / Hakuho
S/K: Meisei / Wakatakakage / Mitakeumi
M1-5: Hoshoryu / Daiesho / Tobizaru
M6-10: Kiribayama / Myogiryu / Onosho

Incidentally, we have 60 people in this basho, so we're definitely opening up Fantasy Juryo. I'll figure out how that's gonna work as bouts start.

It's soooo cute!

I've got the makushita matches going in the background and someone in the chat brought up Shonanzakura, formerly Hattorizakura, and I've spent the last hour just falling down the rabbit hole on this guy. He's 179cm/5'10", he weighs 82kg/180lbs, and... He's bad. Very bad. So bad, in fact, that it's difficult for him to try to lose. No, really, here's day 3 of the September 2016 tournament, where the judges and gyoji just won't let him:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiAI8fXBJoM

As of a few hours ago, he's fought in 236 matches. Let's take a quick look at his biggest wins: In May 2016 he semi-skillfully pivoted his opponent and walked him out of the ring; in July 2018 his opponent slipped a second after contact and fell down; and in January 2019 he won a match by yoritaoshi. (The first two links have links to youtube clips of the matches.)

Those are the biggest wins of his because they are, in fact, his only wins. He's 3-232-1. He set the record for most consecutive losses, 89 between his first and second wins, and then surpassed it with his current streak of 98 losses in a row-- including today, where he lost a match to literally the only person ranked below him on the banzuke. This will give you the idea:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRGR92rBD_w

Apparently he really likes the sumo life and living in the stable, and the stablemaster is content to let him do it, so out he goes every two months to lose his matches. Is it a good idea for him, like, long-term? No, probably not. Will it be setting him up for massive problems when he eventually does leave sumo and have nothing to show for it? Yes, probably. Am I gonna keep an eye out for his matches every chance I get? You're goddamn right.

His (Shonanzakura, not Hakuho) heya, Shikihide, is an interesting one, because the oyakata won't turn away anyone, however poo poo, who loves sumo. They don't have a foreigner in their foreigner slot, as far as I know.

I remember reading somewhere that it's a popular heya with fans who want a simpler sumo and think modern sumo is money driven. Just a bunch of chunky dude's gambarimasi'ing their flabby hearts out.

Bad start to my fantasy sumo career, going 1-4 on the opening day. The Wakatakakage loss hurt bad, because he definitely had the upper hand for most of the match; Hokutofuji just played the defensive game too well. At least I got my Yokozuna win; hopefully Hakuho stays healthy enough to finish the tournament.

If I was the dude that Ura nearly fell on I would have grabbed him and hugged him, telling him he is the best boy.

I don't know what's got into the Ozeki but they're not messing around. Shodai looked like he was out for a pleasant stroll when beating Takanosho, Takakeisho looked like he was toying with Daieisho a bit, letting him think he'd won before defeating him easily and Terunofuji avenged May's loss with a very authoritative win over Endo. I hope all three of them can keep it up for the fifteen days.

:same:

It looked like he had a few different ideas that he stopped when it was going to put a bunch of pressure on his knee. Then he won in a really precarious situation that looked like it easily could've gone the other way? Weird Hakuho match, for sure.
