Yeah, as in 'car accident' I've always used that term whether it was intentional or not, I didn't mean to imply it was actually accidental wow what a great page snipe

I was angry at the last minute dark twist (and I still think they should have done a little more to make feel less like a prank) but then I realized that this could set up a season 2 so I'm okay with it lol

Upon much reflection I kind of hate the ending so I choose to believe this happens immediately afterwards.

The ending feels like the punchline to a very long joke and considering how much comedians figured into the show's premise, I appreciate that.

Summed up thoughts on the ending: Okay so there was a chance for a happier ending if anyone involved at all paid attention to the core issue presented at the very start. Girl is missing. Instead of reporting the dead body we disfigure it and toss it. Instead of tracking down what happened to her for my boss lets find my lost gun, mess with a college kid, and rob a bank. Oh also I'm going to keep taking the camera that has the evidence on it. Speaking of camera evidence Big Daimon hosed it from the police side at the start. Odokawa the one person who could solve the mystery keeps getting pulled in every direction away from it but even still eventually realizes the girl on TV wasn't who he drove and never follows through with fully realizing it was Sakura and this is partially on Yamamoto too. At the end Odokawa, you had three people who would go above and beyond for you that you could have told while you were having your thought aside from the police and you held it in. Our main character had a flaw by god he'll die by that flaw. As a result the thing that was completely solvable now gets more people hurt and Sakura feels invincible. Everyone who drops the missing girl ball gets punished in some way with Odokawa possibly getting the worst of it. The show did well in what it was trying to mimic. I can't be mad at it for that even if I want Odokawa to have a break. And for those who want an unambiguous happy ending ignore the audio dramas and:

The scariest thing is the timeline, too: You can see Sakura carrying the pen/recording device when she hops in Odokawa's Taxi, so at the very least she already attacked Taeko (Yamabiko's Manager/Owner) and is either on the way to or maybe already bumped Giraffe-kun off, so she's either A) In her way out of Tokyo to... well, who the gently caress knows, B) On her way to attack Giraffe-kun or C) In the taxi to try and clean-up her last loose end with our favorite taxi driver. Goddammit, it's been only one day but this ending is still messing with me. In a good and bad way. What the hell.

Basically they tell the story of the show's writer's self-insert, flesh out Giraffe-kun and Rakugo's characters and add more creepiness to Fried Chicken, all of it surrounding the cute heart pen that Fried Chicken is holding at the end of the show. ep1-8 fansubbed here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwnQ7t9i8wk Wiki for the rest of the translations (just go to each individual page) https://oddtaxi.fandom.com/wiki/Odd_Taxi_(audio_drama) There's a chronology on that site if you need it. e: According to one of the producers, the show was first pitched in 2016, and it was originally about Kabasawa, Giraffe-kun and Gacha. Odokawa was a supporting character. Concept art: https://twitter.com/hiragaP/status/1408633113731756035 Ignis fucked around with this message at 00:22 on Jun 30, 2021 |

Yawgmoft posted:No reason to believe it wasn't a sting. She even comments that she ran into him without even trying. I tend to lean on the overall tone of the show to believe Odokawa will end up okay, what with the series being surprisingly more optimistic than it seemed like it was going to be when it started to pick up about a third of the way in. Like, if Kakihana mostly got out of his intensely stupid self-destructive situation, and Dobu didn't end up bleeding out on the pavement, and Imai actually got away with most of his money, and the Daimon brothers reconciled and the elder got tagged with his dirty dealings, and loving TANAKA of all the people had a final shot suggesting he got some sense of closure and healing, then after all that I can't really imagine Sakura will actually manage to kill our protagonist. Especially after showing Odokawa as being surprisingly canny as he's been for the last 13 episodes, I genuinely don't believe he didn't tell someone (probably one of the Daimons) he carried her to the site of a murder. On the other hand, you never know, and that's why it hit so hard. I think he'll end up fine, but man was that a hell of a way to end the show…

As peculiar as it might be, I hope if they do a second series (or another story in the world), they go back to the animal aesthetic. While a neat twist, I don't think the story would've had the same impact overall if they were human. The animal kingdom (and their expressiveness) added to the oddness of the stories within, and made it easier for the audience to follow characters.

Super No Vacancy posted:he already had enough money to take care of orphans, obviously! More money would mean more orphans could be taken care of. It's also a personal thing for Odokawa that everybody's got to pay their debts. The Tapir of Dojima let him reach a point where he has everything he needs, and he wants to make it up to the man, which goes double when making things square lets a lot of other kids in his old position reach adulthood without fear. Meanwhile, his buddy Kakihana got in debt due to his own idiotic decisions, and he's got to pay them off himself. Definitely think the show leans towards Odokawa having the better hand when showing down with Sakura. He had multiple scenes in the finale where he seemed to have put things together, mentioning that he was going to pass it on. What's more, Odokawa's constantly shown to be really good under pressure, while Sakura's getting victory disease, thinking that one chain of lucky breaks means she's invincible. It's intentionally ambiguous, but Odokawa's been in spots at least as tight as this before. And if we think of this in terms of debts... well. Odakawa's paid his. And Sakura's just been racking them up like crazy.

And Sakura's just been racking them up like crazy. There is also the show's major theme of obsession and the way it destroys people. Every single other person in the show who was deeply and intensely driven was brought low and humbled by that same obsession. Tanaka loses his poo poo, Kabasawa ends up screwed by his own desire for stardom, Rui and Yamamoto are under suspicion for murder because they were all chasing their careers, Dobu and Yano self-destruct, Kakihana is, I mean yeah, Homo sapiens are collectively really unhappy, even Imai gets himself kidnapped by the yakuza because he couldn't help himself and just had to cheer THAT LOUDLY for his idol group. Moreover, they seem to get messed up in proportion to how far they went in pursuit of their obsessions, Imai got off relatively light compared to Dobu who's literally going to jail. Considering that now we have Sakura who is so driven to succeed in show business she will LITERALLY kill for it. In the end, everyone else didn't get what they wanted in a bad way, and only found some measure of peace once they let go. Considering that in the overall surprisingly upbeat tone of the show I think Sakura goes down in flames. There's some idea in the show that what makes Odokawa the protagonist is that he's detached from those things and lacks a driving obsession of his own. He's somber and disaffected and has insomnia and plenty of baggage all on his own, he's not exactly living the high life, but the reveal of the diary the end suggests that the job he's doing is one he wanted to do and the life he's living as a cabdriver is one he's actually happy with. He's not interested in the money Dobu offers, he has a clear sense of justice, he's a little bit of romantic in the way he tries to keep people safe, and his primary overriding desire is merely to pay back what he's been given if he has the opportunity.
