Trump's racism didn't stop him from making big gains with minorities, some of which were directly targeted by his racist tirades. That sort of thing usually does backfire on the racist.

:geno: Yes, it's like a lava lamp.

Is there some culturally known way to signal to a driver behind you to turn off their loving highbeams? I saw at least three such people driving with them on in the middle of the day today; it was not dark, it was just raining.

I really wish I had some sort of mirror system that reflects the light that would hit my rearview camera right back to the windshield of the car behind me.

Goosed it.

I can't tell if this is a joke or not. Can't you toggle your rearview mirror to do just that?

I think that's what the tab on the bottom of your rearview mirror is for. I didn't know that for the longest time.

The narrative that covid was a bioweapon that escaped from a Chinese lab and infected their own population is something people very much want to be true because it simultaneously fulfills both the Yellow Peril narrative and also "lol China so dumb" narrative.

I think it's more than that even. People want to feel in control, a virus causing a global pandemic just because that's how nature went is a scary thing. If you can believe that it was engineered and released, well that's fine then, because it means we can do something about that, or at least blame someone.

It's 90% serious. That tab does do the dimming of the rear which is nice but does little to reduce the light coming in from the side mirrors, and as far as I know it's not particularly visible to the guy driving behind me.

Depends, there will of course be some sentiment from Pro-China immigrants. But from my circle they are mostly anti-china/anti-communist which is why they came here in the first place. They like parties that were hardline against Mainland China.

It will definitely depend on how the demographics have changed since then of course, and even bashing China can only go so far on winning that vote.

Even though the population of the PRC vs HK is like 200:1, the demographics of ethnic Chinese immigrants in Canada is a lot closer to plurality. I would say 30% from HK, 60% from PRC, and the rest from mainly Taiwan but also places with diaspora like Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam.

HKers are disproportionately represented in politics as well. I would say the percentages for HKers and mainlanders would have been reversed 20 years ago. They were the majority of immigrants in the 20th century, with one last explosion around the handover of HK in 1997.The bulk of mainland Chinese immigrants are still experiencing their first or second generation in Canada and are not as politically involved, less established in the community, and still have ties to extended family back home who will directly be affected by warfare, economic or otherwise.

All this to say that anti-CCP sentiments will definitely still be very strong, since you might not want to mouth off about the CCP if you have family back home, and the loudest ethnic Chinese voices involved in politics do not have that tie to mainland China. You'll see almost every Chinese-Canadian politician on this list is from HK: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_visible_minority_politicians_in_Canada

I LOVE sending emails to the provincial government with my burner email account with a dumb name (video gamessss) cause Chrome keeps that one logged in. :/

Trying to seek a reduction on my speeding ticket - 78 in a 60 construction zone... but in my defense the pylons opened from a single back up to a double on a road that's normally 80 but then about 1 to 1.5km later there was another construction area so the law is that you must maintain 60 until you see a Construction Ends sign.

Someone in a FB group posted this video showing what the area was like that day:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMHanwUQWeo
(55 seconds in you see it open back up and also the photo van on the service road).
In the same group there must have been like 30 to 40 people who also got a ticket and that's just the people who a) know of the group b) even use Facebook. Seems signage should have been better.

They must have made hundreds of thousands with the amount of traffic going through that area that weekend - it's the main road leading out of Winnipeg to the many beaches and parks.

Ya that's bullshit but if there wasn't actually a sign RIP. I hate the poor signage in this city. I got dinged once for 40 in a 30 school zone because it was industrial straight to school zone and there's a billion loving signs out there and the important ones aren't really designed to stick out. My saving grace is I habitually drive under the limit when right next to cars parked on the street because gently caress running someone over.

I can't wait for those flashing school zone signs. At the same time get rid of all of the clutter telling me that this church or that curling club is down whatever street. If that were important to me I'd put it up on GPS.

Harper knows how to play the game and after Libs get another majority when basically anyone who wants it is fully vaxxed, CPC will be looking for anyone who offers a credible chance to unseat Trudeau instead of passing chud-purity tests.

Can I do that thing where if I’m wrong I get banned?

As is what tends to happen when you purge all potential rivals and successors from the ranks thinking you'd die in office at a ripe old age and then get blindsided out of power. Harperland thankfully died with Harper's career in parliament, and the Cons still haven't found a way out of the Mad Maxime wasteland that cropped up overnight once the word got out that the king was dead.
