It's got some big revelations about a certain order of Tanith tree ninjas. It's set in Vincula shortly after the Imperial victory and the Ghosts are tasked with security against an Iraq style insurgency. It's going to be an ongoing side series exploring this new storyline and what was happening to the Ghosts in between books. I don't think BL did a particularly good job hyping it because I don't think many people actually realize a new Gaunt's Ghosts book was released.

From what Abnett writes in the foreword it's probably going to be a few years until we get it. He is working on the Double Eagle sequel though!

Yeah, don't sleep on Farrers Urdesh book if you haven't read it. His Space Marine action scenes are genuinely good and I really liked his vignette scenes of side characters. He's rapidly climbing my list of BL authors whose work to look out for.

Maybe it's time to try again. I'm glad you said this, because I just could not get into the Calpurnia books. A friend lent me the omnibus and I got about halfway through the first book before giving up. It's a shame, because his world building and detail is extremely good, but there was just something about it that made it an unrewarding slog. And it's not even because it's badly written - it just feels like hard work for no reward. I'm told it gets better, but I ended up getting another Cain novel as refreshment. I didn't realise he did After Desh'ea which I thought was great.

I remember liking the first Calpurnia book as 40k cop drama, since this was years ahead of the Crime books. And the second one was pretty solid even if it didn't feel like a Calpurnia book the slightest. Third one I honestly don't remember much of, which should say a lot about it. Those book did lead to Farrer writing for the Arbites supplement for the first edition of Dark Heresy RPG. Would've loved to have more of those on my shelf because they're not half bad sources of lore.

I'm most of the way through Valdor: Birth of the Imperium and I'm finding it a real slog. Maybe because it takes place before the Imperium really gets going so I don't have too many well-known people to care about, but. Meh.

I really enjoyed the pre-Imperium stuff as a picture of what all these titles and concepts that are presented as immutable and solidified ideas were like when they were new and nobody really knew what they were dealing with with the Emperor. I also enjoyed the contrast between Valdor'a internal monologue and other characters' accounts of him, just because seeing hints of impostor syndrome or genuine humility (or just a really boring guy). I think if you're not already pretty familiar with 30k stuff you'd be pretty lost with it though.

I liked it, what's-her-name, the councilor lady, was maybe the first person, of many, to be disillusioned by the imperium. I think Valdor flat out tells her "oh, you thought the democracy and civilization stuff was real? Nah, that's a lie we tell everyone." There's a lot of arguments in there both for and against the idea that the Emperor was just the most successful warlord, and wasn't really a better person than any of the ones that came before.

Yeah Godblight was meh apart from all the political and philosophical questions. I get the setting is all about war but the entire battle in the end was skippable and could have been boiled down to a duel with nothing lost.

I actually loved Godblight! The Nurgleites were hilarious. The battles were fine if unspectacular, but there weren’t really a lot of them. Big battle at the end wasn’t even that forgettable, there was the dece library scene, I still remember the war crimes space marine insertion team, and everything about the big religious mini crusade was great. Valdor was good because I wasn't too familiar with the thunder warriors, and never spent much time looking into them other than they were the proto-space marines. But drat, it really paints a clear picture of purpose and that someone knew something no one else did about the future of mankind.

I am a couple of chapters into Fire Caste and thank you so much for recommending it. Where Godblight is just straight forward “The space marine walked down the stairs”, Fire Caste will make you smell and feel the texture and everything surrounding the stairs, if you catch my drift. For those of you who thought Godblight was fantastic, did you read the Lords of Silence? Or just try Fire Caste. I would love to hear your thoughts and comparisons.

Fire Caste is unquestionably better... but it's also unquestionably better than most 40k fiction. Godblight was fun. More fun than Lords of Silence, certainly.

I was reading the Cawl hacking scene from The Great Work and it struck me how similar cyberspace battles and psychic battles are written in 40k. When psykers fight, it's often written that they focus their energy onto a psychic construct like a shark or something and you have an imaginary shark and imaginary eagle bite and claw at each other. In infosphere battles the security system is described as sending spiteful data genies and building cyber walls. It's all a bit silly but not badly written.
