When you’re on a cross-country road trip and you stop in rural Eastern Colorado, you got all types of time for this poo poo.

Pumping 91 - went inside to let them know their pump was hosed up and they said “yeah we know, there’s nothing we can do about it. You should just put 87 in the car instead.”

I had enough patience to let it get to $1.20 before I quit and found another gas station across the highway.

Had that happen to me once right after I left work and it was like -10F out and I sat there in the cold car for the 15 minutes to put in about 3 gallons. Should have bailed, but I'm pig headed.

92/93 probably isn't that bad of a jump, but this still makes me want to put a call in to the County Board of Weights & Measures.

Why is the octane rating of gas in the US so low? I'm not sure if you can get anything less than 95 here.

The US uses AKI (anti-knock index), which is RON+MON/2, I'm a little impressed that it actually has the formula on the pump.

Most of the rest of the world is used to seeing RON, which will be slightly higher, I think 91 AKI is around 95 RON.

My first thought seeing these photos in this order was that this person pulled up to the gas station, had a photo taken, then all the bondo just collapsed and fell off, prompting a second photo. I'm a little disappointed it was on purpose.

Compression is effectively lower at altitude, so you can get by with lower octane, and in Colorado, that’s a consideration.

Not that low, though. You might see, like eighty‐five instead of eighty‐seven.

Running a car with a knock sensor in lower octane is fine unless you are going to be redlining it in every gear. Even something with carbs and no electronics with high compression is fine as long, again, you are not redlining it in every gear. Would you want to do it all the time? No but in a pinch it is fine.

I keep a stash of octane boosters in the trunk of my turbo cars, because crossing the prairies sometimes gives you few options.

I don't want any knocking that can be avoided.

Valet mode, for anyone not aware, is a mode that limits the redline to something low (like 4000 RPM) and boost very low for turbo cars. I don't believe it pulls timing, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, I stopped at the only station within ten miles as I was low and they had 85 and 87 only. Not enough in my tank to go elsewhere. Put in enough to get to town and babied it to a proper place to top up with 91.

Thing is I can't recall ever driving a car that requires the middle grade, so don't know why that was the other option...

They must sell a lot of it, or else they wouldn’t stock it. I guess a lot of people drive cars that call for 91 and they think “I’ll just save money and drive slow, it’s all in traffic anyway”

Or “my car takes 87 but I convince myself it runs better on 89”

I thought the middle grade was just a blend of hi and lo so to offer it is simple for the gas station. Just has to be built with a mixing valve and the right piping.

Only plausible reason I've heard for 89 is a car that took 87 having it's compression bumped by carbon buildup enough to ping on it. I don't think that's really a thing anymore though.

I use 91 or higher in my Scion during summer months cuz it’s so drat hot, running the a/c constantly and it’s just a little insurance to prevent knocking because I do tend to flog it quite a bit.

Oh I’m aware; the terrible part isn’t even the speed of the pump, it’s their complete apathy to the situation. No “oh thanks, we will put a sign on it” or anything. Just “use 87”. Couldn’t be bothered.

I don't know how it is in other states, but in Texas the price increment between octane grades has become really large. I'm old, but for a long portion of my driving life, it was a standard practice that midgrade was $0.10/gal more than 87, and premium was an additional $0.10/gal above the midgrade. But 10-15 years ago, this long-standing practice went in the toilet and I started seeing premium at 40-50 cents above regular. Today at a Valero station, I grudgingly and resentfully paid $0.80/gal more for premium, although I limited my fillup to a half tank in protest. This wanton aggression cannot stand; how can they justify charging such a huge price increase between grades?

poo poo, by me, it’s closer to $0.50 between grades. I’ve been paying like $1 more for a long as I can remember. Yeah, early 00’s was $0.10.
