The game doesn't look too bad, and the classes and races look really fun and good, lots of customization. But it's a pvp game with a high entry price, but no marketing. Idk how it can have a healthy population

Right now the population is pretty healthy. Lots and lots of people playing, but the servers are not stable currently.

It really is a lovely hat

Game is fun, but who knows if it will maintain enough population to remain fun. For now, it has a lot of bumbling wolf and corvid murder.

If you are the type of person who enjoys creative mechanics discovery time, this is a moment to get into a game for a week or two.

It may have changed quite a bit since I last tried it but I also remember the game to be setup so that crafting, gathering and a player driven economy would be prominent features.

Like to gather advanced materials you needed a party and to specialize in gathering, meaning you'd need people to escort you so that you wouldn't get robbed (since you can loot players inventories after killing them)

There is a lot of potential for interesting emergent gameplay.

Also the procedural generation and ephemeral worlds mean they can easily tweak things like the amount of available resources and such, and create worlds with varied difficulty setups.

There are actually a lot of interesting ideas in this game.

Another cool thing is that with a spectral axe, after killing a player you can use the axe to decapitate them to force them to release (which in turns allows to loot them). This also lets you to loot their head as an inventory item, so you could setup a vendor somewhere that would buy a specific players head for a set price to create bounties on specific players.

Some players would actually release immediately on their own accord after getting killed because they would rather let you loot them than suffer the indignity of you taking their head as a trophy

I am the sexiest poster in the world!
I got in the mix for a bit, only tried the pve stuff so far but was about to start getting into a proper world after using my level boost.

I think the character builds/abilities strike a nice balance, and it's interesting to have a setup where you can't get every active combat ability and passive for a class and need to make meaningful choices. The disciplines system that slots in active and passive bonuses that can apply to a wide variety of classes looks like it will be pretty cool too. Since disciplines are something that won't degrade with time but will take resources to power up, they seem like the immediate thing that people will be grinding up resources for.

I want to have at least one character that's really good at crafting something, but I'm planning to change things from my original plan of leveling that character and work on a character with some gathering abilities instead. It seems pretty sensible to start farming up materials that I know I'll be using a lot.

It was hell to try to get into it on launch day, but once I finally did I had a solid time with it. Seeing how quickly I got bored with doing traditional MMO stuff of running around killing mobs as part of quests has me convinced that this type of MMO with meaningful reasons to do PVP or PVPVE (fighting mobs and gathering resources, but knowing you could be killed/ambushed at any time because players have tangible things to gain by doing that) is the right sort of game in the genre for me right now.

As far as I know there really won't be any major raid bosses or dungeons (though I'd expect at least some light elements of that to be added to the game eventually. The way campaign worlds have a set lifespans is begging for there to be a big boss fight at the end of it, optimally in a way that lets the various player guilds that have been killing each other team up against it). So if that's what you're looking for, I'd recommend you play one of the many fine MMOs that have waded deep into that space already.

Also one thing to keep in mind is there are several vessel (character) quality levels. The ones you create on the character creation screen are grey quality but it is possible to craft (or purchase from other players) higher quality ones that take much longer to level but have better stats.

Ultimately the grey vessels are just starter ones.

(Yes it's a whole Frankenstein thing where you craft new vessels by stitching body parts dug from graveyards)

How can we lose so much more than we had before

It's much more stable this morning, we'll see how it is tonight.

I made it to the second island world thing and it's still PvE, and the PvE content in this is pretty not good. I get that this is a tutorial, but if it's just a tutorial than it's too long. Looking forward to getting into the real game. Does it unlock some sort of skip option for alts after doing that? Or is this just a thing they sell?

If you have VIP sub, you can use a pedestal in the starting Earth Temple to skip to level 25. This can be done for first char or any alts. Without VIP I believe it costs a decent amount of gold to do.

In other news, I'm on a discord that has a bot that pulls population data from an API of theirs. I've seen game population float between 2500-3000 since yesterday besides obviously when servers were down. Currently at 2,627 players globally as of 11:30am CDT.

Same, classes looked cool enough to play for a couple weeks at least. Already made the mistake of going on the general chat of the crowfall discord and found many a toxic fellow. “Can’t wait to slit your throat” to some random person. Place could use some moderation, I know these types of games attract people like that but ugh I am too old to have patience for that poo poo.

Hard to say, the servers were basically down most of last night until they were completely down and Art+Craft said on their forums to "play on the test server while we work on this for the next 6 hours" which is a pretty :laffo: launch day response. Have to see what it looks like tonight I guess.

Is there a fee or some requirement of getting people in one place to start a guild? I got to the point where it tells me to join one but so far I just ended up making a new character because cleric seemed pretty :tootzzz:

Not sure what the ingame cost is for guilds, but from what I saw people saying on streams: Do you want a cool colour for your guild? They are $10-$20 (each) on the cash shop

I have the 250 kickstarter package which I traded for a city plot deed I won in a raffle in SoTA (they were trying to sell these for 1000$ LOL), so I am in the game for the 30 bucks I spent on steam I guess. That pack gives me the expanded heraldry stuff and other perks but I definitely do not have the time or bandwidth to actually run a guild. If someone wants to take on that mantle, I could probably get the creation of it taken care of.

These frostweaver mechanics seem very confusing with all of the ice types and having to ground target for all of my damage, is that ground targeting the basis of the entire class even in promotion classes?

Haven't seen another MMO give an API that outs their exact player population either though so tough to compare but I think it's safe to say it's pretty low. Considering no marketing and it's catered entirely toward guild pvp... it's ok? The small maps that everyone complains about helps in this regard tbh. Not a clusterfuck and also the maps don't feel entirely like a ghost town. When Dregs and whatever the faction v faction worlds are (infected I think?) open up, it will spread thin. Oh also swords of legends comes out Friday, and New World + Lost Ark coming up soon. Gulp.

It certainly doesn't sound like much. But likely almost everyone playing is interested in this very specific kind of game, given there's no marketing. You'd have to care enough about PvP games and DAoC to actively seek out information about them to even really know about it. That's good for the people playing at least. The real question is if it's enough to keep the lights on at the studio. It's not like Return of Reckoning where it's a labor of love that doesn't have salaries to pay, so I'm thinking probably not unfortunately.

It's been said before in this thread but they specifically reached out to and catered to the forumbane crowd in the early days (essentially the old school, impossibly toxic shitposters from Shadowbane) and while I think most of them got self-selected and filtered out, it means that basically the only people that stuck around for the extremely bad development process of Crowfall were people who could tolerate those people before they bailed and anyone they could con into it.

The game is almost certainly comprised entirely of way too serious, "SHUT UP ON COMMS WHEN THE COMMANDER IS TALKING" kind of guilds and those people only ever want fights they can win handily. It's gonna die fast.

Spread over 11 regional servers currently, not counting people dicking around in their eternal kingdom server (instanced player housing). You can freely and quickly pick any other regional server though (think of it more like picking a different Battlefield server from a lobby) so each servers population is always in flux.

Running around with a guild is clearly where the fun is, subjectively I guess. Last night I tagged along with a random Moon guild in Sky Point and we capped all the forts on US East 1 and ran in to other Sun/Earth groups for spontaneous battles which was a lot of fun. If Guild Wars 2 world vs world was your jam then this game is for you. It's basically WvW all the time.

I'm walkin' here
I've been playing for a week and here's my opinion. I'll just sort of run through everything.

- PvP Combat is good to great. This is the selling point. I just wish there was a little more to take / lose on death.
- PvE is as basic as it can get.
- No story
- No questing
- Spell animations are almost non existent outside of a few spells (Cleric's Root is probably the most animated spell in the game)
- Depth is decent enough- It's somewhat superficial though, as you have to lock your self into a specialization that gives you a specific way you should be playing. That being said, disciplines are great and really shake up what you can do.
- There's basically no economy. Which is really kind of sad for this game. The worst feeling is going out and "farming" and not really have any gauge to what you're getting. This feels bad and might be the biggest reason why people quit. (No sense of gaining wealth)
- Endgame loop is essentially split between farming and PvP depending on what you want to be doing and how good you are at PvP. PvP isn't rewarding enough right now and seems like the best rewards are just from killing PvE bosses which is mostly just tedious to have to sort out.

So what does this all boil down to? Well, the game is fun- for a bit. And the fun will end / continue depending on your guild and their plan to gear their members. Guilds must gear their members. People must work together. This means that if your guild is JUST pvping, they will soon realise they're super far behind of the gear train and their guild will likely die. This means big guilds will be supreme as they share their wealth. Im not really sure where this goes towards the end game honestly but I think possibly like most MMOs the best time to play will be now.

All this being said I think the game is worth about $40 AUD, which is like 30USD or something. I do think that they have something but Im not sure if they'll capitalize on it based on how slow their leadup to this was, and what is essentially a beta for a release.

There is also hardly any build info out there and, being a pvp mmo, unlikely to have a ton of top tier builds publicly shared, so that’s another reason to play now. Everyone except beta testers are on the same level of knowledge and total noobs so fights may feel more balanced.
