goddamnedtwisto posted:Coming from someone in my very much built-for-comfort shape, telling people Exercise Is Good would be insincere even beyond my amazing abilities to cover up. Exercise is (mostly - depending on any underlying condition / location / weather) good for you regardless of shape. You seem to do lots of walking which has many benefits, not just physical (calorie burning, heart-helping, muscle strengthening) but also head-clearing, space-giving, mood-lifting, local history learning.... so you almost certainly could tell people exercise is good without being insincere!

Case numbers today are looking great lads, very confident that dropping all restrictions in a couple of weeks is the best course of action! Quick back of the fag packet numbers (OK I used Excel) give me 22,581 hospital admissions per week and 275,990 daily cases in 6 weeks time at the current rate of increase. Luckily we're dropping all restrictions in 2 weeks so I'm sure that'll cause the numbers to change for the better or something.

It's becoming increasingly likely that the Hancock story was leaked solely because he gave a bit more of a gently caress than Javid does about this and they wanted him replaced pronto so they could push this through unopposed. Murderers, the lot of them.

Saw an old work colleague today, I only worked with him a couple of times, he's a good lad and I liked working with him. He caught COVID and I didn't hear anything about him so I thought he'd been moved to a different contract which is pretty common in the rail maintenance business. Today he came to a site I was working at to visit a couple of friends. I was really shocked when I saw him, he's about 6' 3" and used to be built like a brick poo poo house only with a bit of a belly. But now, after COVID had really hosed him, he's stick thin, has difficulty speaking and needs a cane to walk. He's like a ghost of his former self. He's been told he will get better and will be able to return to work but it will take a couple of years to fully recover and he won't be nearly as strong and active as he once was. He seemed just happy to be alive, he thought he was going to die a couple of times. I see him and I think about how people are flippant over COVID and it blows my mind and makes me angry all in one.

That's my theory too. I simply don't believe that the tape leak was accidental. They wanted shut of Hancock. (I'm no fan of Hancock). I'm darn sure quantities of government ministers are cheats and everyone knows Johnson is, so it seems hypocritical to use that as a reason to get shut of Hancock without the rest of them resigning en masse. bessantj posted:Saw an old work colleague today, I only worked with him a couple of times, he's a good lad and I liked working with him. Yes, people are talking out their rear end. My brother's partner's son (early 20s) had it 'asymptomatically' (picked up on a test) and is now riddled with blood clots.

A colleague at works partner got covid back in May 2020 and still hasn't recovered properly. Struggles to move around much. Only in her 20's.

Covid; the new Tuberculosis.... not that the old one is truly gone. Booze talk; not had a drink since January but with the 12th coming up here in glorious Norn Irn i will see if they are selling any very cheaply priced spirits in Tesco/Lidl this Friday, i may or may not get a bottle... i'm not even protestant but cheap is cheap. My own addiction is food but no matter what it is for everyone else; the fight goes on; to strive, to seek, to find..... and not to yield.

stev posted:They've managed not to acknowledge it as a real thing for the last year so they'll probably just keep doing that. I think some study is claiming to show that ‘long COVID’ is actually the reactivation of a different virus which flourishes while the immune system is busy (people who know what they are talking about, don’t shoot me for simplifying). That virus is widely prevalent, and not really characterised as a disease. I kind of suspect that there are a lot of unknown medical conditions like that, which don’t kill you, just make your life somewhat lovely, in some undefinable way. Perhaps identifying and curing those would do more for the population of the first world than just about anything else. Philosophically, existentialism, absurdism and son on have been described and argued for, but no one has covered humanism. As I understand it, that is the view that, as humans, we are all machineries of joy Such a machine can be broken, but a broken machine can be fixed.

The study you were thinking of was on Epstein-Barr virus which is a type of herpesvirus functionally everyone has and can cause ME/CFS symptoms if it reactivates.

CGI Stardust posted:back when Long Covid first made an appearance I was hoping the seeming commonalities with ME would maybe lead to both being taken more seriously, some research done, find out if there's anything common and whether they're treatable (also maybe getting rid of doctors who don't believe it exists or think it's shorthand for "lack of willpower"). but nooooope, it's falling into the same pit, isn't it? "here's some people who say they've got it. my, how terrible. now, to forget all about it" My sisters hubby has M.E., he had to fight that poo poo for years.

Please don't suddenly stop drinking if you are drinking a lot and have been for years. Alcohol is a physical addiction and withdrawl can be serious - hallucinations and seizures type serious. Taper down if you need to. Josef Bugman, I kind of get where you're coming from with needing to do good, because there are times when I judge my own worth based on how useful I am to other people. There are plenty of people who are content with their mundane routine of work/TV/sleep, but I absolutely believe their lives are of value and have meaning. And yet I hold myself to a different standard. I'm also a vaccination clinic volunteer, doing both the crowd control and vaccinations depending on what's needed. The people coming through have been out and about, so the concept of being around other people isn't too scary, but there are a lot of people who are either worried because they hate needles or excited it will mean they can see their families, and both need that human touch. I actually got told by a doctor that it wasn't necessary to talk to them as much as I did, then he proceeded to greet the next person by asking them their date of birth, never asked their name or told them his, and didn't explain what the potential side effects were because 'it is in the leaflet'. People have waited months for their opportunity to book an appointment and then stood for an hour in a queue, they deserve a Hello.
