There being a dude whose last name was "towns" is so loving funny to me. I bet he was champing at the bit to get a town named after him.

Can confirm, Townsville is an absolute shithole. It's main tourist feature is an overcommercialised strip of ugly beach that you can't even swim at, the rest of it is endless sprawling suburbia and industrial estate laid out with no real rhyme or reason.

I was born in Townsville. Raised there a bunch. Sometimes forced to go attend family poo poo there. I hated it then, I hate it now, I will always hate it. I've lived in tiny shithole towns like Collinsville, and I am currently in Brisbane. I love Brisbane. People poo poo on it but I think Brisbane is amazing. I feel like some of that is just "well, it isn't Townsville."

Brisbane rules, it's very up and coming though and it won't be long until we get dragged down to Melbourne/Sydney levels.

I went there once in maybe 1991 or something, I was a kid, can't remember poo poo of it except getting breakfast delivered to our hotel rooms. Excellent sausages. I hadn't had sausages for breakfast before that. I remember Mackay, though. Mackay is a shithole.

A guy I worked with years ago was from Townsville and described the nightlife as sitting around drinking and waiting for the entertainment to start, which consisted of the aborigines, AJs and FIFOs punching on.

Last lockdown I got stuck in a Townsville hotel room quarantine for 3 of the 4 days, lockdown being called while in the air My partner spent most of the lockdown getting blasted on cider and bubbles I watched the the entirety of a couple anime series and reading and we both did a bunch of people watching on the balcony I'm not sure our holiday would have been improved by being allowed to walk around

Fun fact Burpengary was originally called Fartengary but the town thought that it didn't play well with the tourists.

Yeah, this is what I'm wondering about! I've been in trades all my life and the attitude is generally "I sure hope the trades finish up quick and get the gently caress out of here so I don't have to look at them anymore". I've heard and seen WAY more positivity towards tradies on the forums/australian youtube than I ever have gotten myself. Every so often I do get someone who offers me water/coffee/snacks and tips me for my service, but generally people hate to see me because I'm going to disrupt their day while I fix their poo poo. Australia's on a different planet regarding tradie respect, and it's cool to see! e - Think of Tony Stark in uh... the Ultron one? where he asks Pepper "Why are there a bunch of sweaty workmen in my elevator?" except it's a Little Prince asking when I'm going to be done every 7 minutes, that's how trades are seen here. Octy posted:When did beer start getting expensive? I remember when I was 18 or 19 you could buy a six pack of Coopers for $15 and that was only a bit over a decade ago. I don't know when's the last time I saw a six pack for less than $20 unless it was on special or paid much less than $10 for a schooner. Gradual process. But its all about tax. The bulk of the price of a carton of beer , at least in WA, is Tax. Or at least thats what I've been told. There isn't a real reason why beer should be as expensive as it is, except that the bureacrats believe price measures are the best way to control alcoholism, and thus they tax the living poo poo out of it. It was once upon a time held as a political truth the one thing you will never find public support for is taxing beer. Oh well.

Mostly alcohol excise. The gubb takes a huge chunk of tax from the producers just for making it. hence why import cases of Heiniken are cheaper than local brews. And better.

There is a distinction made between a 'tradesperson' which means you've done an apprenticeship and got your union ticket, and a 'labourer' which is some poor bastard stuck on one end of a shovel. The former is middle-class, the latter is lower-class.

The Lone Badger posted:This is the tax working as intended. After years of wanting to quit, being financially bullied out of it worked out. The benefits outweigh the cons. - I don't stink like cigarettes anymore. - I don't cough my lungs out daily. - I am not hitting the puffer as much. - I am not spending $28 a few times a week on horrible, cheap, poo poo-tier 20 packs of lung bungers. 1 pack might last me a night if drinking, sometimes buying a second. Vapes last me 2-7 days. - Hangovers are far milder, though this was also because I laid down some rules about how I drink. - Cravings are gone. - If I run out of vape, I am not going full withdrawal edgy and can happily wait until I can afford more, also don't have biting cravings for the drat thing, can even drink without vaping and not think about it. I'll eventually stop these too, knowing it will be much easier than smokes. Until then, I'll enjoy my Mango Ice flavoured clouds.

I quit when Winny Blues hit the $12 mark because I couldn't justify spending almost $100 a week on them. Now a single pack is about $60 and I don't know how anyone affords it. Obvious answer - they don't.
