Also, what about halal food for muslims - apparently (to my surprise) I discover that muslims are the second largest religious community in Northern Ireland (article here mentions 4000 http://euroviews.eu/2019/2019/04/22/muslims-in-northern-ireland-are-sitting-on-the-fence/ )
Halal food has been completely vilified by the red tops, since the 'animal cruelty' angle is one of the few islamophobic corners left that they can still hide in. Kosher food is only being pushed to keep the antesemitism angle going. I doubt this has anything to do with actual religious requirements.

The England football team is not the British government and it's nice sometimes to find something to have fun with and feel good about. I am qualified to say this as I very much used to be that teenage arsehole who thought only dumbasses enjoyed it, and now I have very much realised that was my own very pathetic classist 'I'm not like most proles' subconscious attitude coming out.

e: it's surprising how many people in my family immediately go to 'it's disgusting that footballers earn so much when nurses don't' when we talk about wealth disparity, completely ignoring the actual problem. Like ok complain that football shouldn't be the multi million pound industry it is, but that's not the players' fault and if someone offered me hundreds of thousands a month to do something I loved I'd jump at the chance. It's also one of the very very few jobs where working class kids can, if they're very very good and very lucky, become astonisthhingly rich, without the need for connections etc. I wonder if that's related to the above point, somehow.

vv Yes, exactly, if you're not into the game that's perfectly fine. Don't watch it. It's the people who sit there coming up with smug takes about how they're much more intellectual than all of this silly nonsense that annoy me.

Football, however, is pure strain capitalism. Football means nothing to me, I don't enjoy or understand it, but if people enjoy it, knock yourself out. There is something inheritantly British about going crackers at a game, yet if the government installed oxygen meters tomorrow, they would roll their eyes and go. "Tsk."

Wrong on every count. You should have been out in London last night, it was pure joy and it was unrestricted across gender and ethnicity. If you really think that this will be in some way linked with Brexit you are deeply out of touch.

On a more general note - if you let the shittiness of other fans of <thing> stop you from liking <thing> you'll basically never ever like anything good, and if you use the shittiness of those fans as a brush to tar all of the fans of <thing> you're probably not as good a person as you like to think you are.

I don't know exactly how Covid has impacted the timeline for better or worse, but honestly it's been so fast from a doctor asking for a cursory MRI for their records, to an issue being identified, investigated, consulted with and acted upon.

Obvs I'm right now unbelievably making GBS threads myself but am trying to distract myself with 9th Wonder of the Modern World the NHS

I'm writing a polite but strong letter to kasper schmeichel to let him know the football is coming home after all. I do want him to know that it's a serious matter, but I don't want to seem threatening or angry, so I'm considering composing it with my green crayons and clippings from heat magazine.
I hope everyone in the thread will join me in sending letters to kasper who, god willing, will become a friendly ghost.

Eh you're right. I'm just feeling really fed up with football as its invaded every aspect of my work life as well as here and my home life.

That's no reason to generalise about the fans who almost certainly are 95% decent happy folk and like anything else probably less than 5% twattery.

I won't deny that watching the insane goal reaction videos from last night was quite entertaining.

I've made a huge mistake.
I assume that the official UKMT position on anthems is that they should be booed at every opportunity given their significance to nationalistic brainworms?

Start of a football game: boo away
Olympic openining ceremony: boo away
During BBC Proms: boo away
Random TV commercial: boo away
Queen's state funeral: boo away

People were complaining more about red tractor certified Halal meat sold in supermarkets, which is slaughtered exactly the same as the rest of the supermarket meat but with a prayer, than they were about any Kosher butchers.

The objectionable bit was that they had to see a foreign Muslim word while shopping rather than any of the details.

If people are taking the knee for the anthem how do you make it clear that you're booing the anthem and not the taking of the knee?

Kneel and boo at the same time.

Or sing something better to drown out the anthem.

There are differences between halal and kosher - not with the meat but with other items. For example you can have kosher wine but it would not be halal. Also kosher uses some gelatine and there's something to do with some sorts of seafood as well.
So while muslims are often advised that they can eat kosher if halal is not available - kosher is more strict than halal on the whole - they have to look out for a special kosher mark which is the very strict kosher interpretation. And they still need to check for non-halal items.

But yeah, essentially the big fuss in the papers was racism (

quote:

gammon: 'but islam is not a race so it's not racism'
) well whatever you want to call it then*.

(When I first moved to Cairo I couldn't understand why none of the shops had 'halal' in the windows (حلال) signs in the windows - a common feature of downtown Walthamstow.. took me a while to realize that just about everything was halal except in the specialist pork product shops catering to the Copts and expats.)
