Not to defend a guy who almost certainly tortured people, but isn't there an interview where he had a basic outline for Heroes in Crisis and DC flat out told him "Make Wally West the murderer."

Yep. It was posted earlier but here it is againTom King posted:As I've said many times before, I don't pick the characters for my story; I give my plot to the editors and then the editors pick the characters for me. So I told them in the beginning, "this is what it's going to be — it's going to be about one hero who's made a mistake and it's going to be about the two heroes that get framed for that mistake." And they said, "okay, it's Booster, Harley, and Wally, those are the three characters."

It's pretty common for comics writers to be told what characters they can and cannot use for various pitches. Despite what Bendis claims I refuse to believe Alias wasn't originally supposed to be a Jessica Carpenter series. King may have had different heroes in mind when he made the pitch and then DC said "We love the concept, but make it these three instead." Emma Frost only has the diamond transformation thing because Grant Morrison was told they couldn't use Colossus and they wanted a heavy. Given her impact on the last 20 years of X titles I can't imagine what they would have looked like if he'd been allowed to resurrect Colossus.

Emma Frost only has the diamond transformation thing because Grant Morrison was told they couldn't use Colossus and they wanted a heavy. Given her impact on the last 20 years of X titles I can't imagine what they would have looked like if he'd been allowed to resurrect Colossus. 1) Bendis is all over the place in interviews, but even if he had ideas for a Jessica Drew series, by the time he was actually writing Alias it had progressed away from that into a Jessica Jones series. Watchmen was supposed to be a Charlton heroes series before Moore/Wein/etc. mutually agreed it should be its own thing. Pitches get reworked all of the time, GI Joe was supposed to be a Nick Fury/SHIELD revamp, Speedball was going to be a New Universe character, Dazzler was going to be the fifth member of X-Factor, not Jean Grey. Plans changed. This doesn't make Madeline Pryor a demon-influenced clone of Dazzler, or Destro secretly a Fenris Twin. 2) Team books are even stickier, Morrison did in fact request Colossus (and Moira MacTaggart, and Storm, and Rogue) in their "Mutant Manifesto" pitch for New X-Men, and was told that the first two were dead and the second two were going to be in Claremont's book. Their pitch only gave detailed descriptions of the first seven issues, and other than having Moira play Exposition Dump in conversations with Xavier (a role more or less given to Beast) and that he wanted to kill off Rogue to a) bring in a new "Rogue" more in line with the Anna Paquin movie character and b) build to a drunken Wolverine/Gambit heart-to-heart that eventually turned into a Wolverine/Cyclops one none of the characters were given anything explicit to do in the rest of the pitch. Strictly speaking Emma Frost "replaced" Colossus in the same way Beast replaced Moira (and most of the "special class" shifted from being U-Men to actual mutants) but people always bring this up like Morrison just Ctrl-R'd all of their scripts and replaced "Colossus" with "Emma" and "Moira" with "Beast" or something. They were told they couldn't use Colossus months before their first issue came out, and before Frank Quitely did any concept art. 3) All of this seems different than how Tom King describes his pitches, which is less "I wanted to do an Avengers book with Thor, Hawkeye, Vision, and Mantis, but they told me I couldn't use Hawkeye or Vision so I reworked it to include Jocasta and Quasar instead" and more "I wanted to write a story about two heroes having an affair and killing each other and a third hero covering up the double murder and they told me I could have Wonder Man and Mockingbird kill each other and Stingray end up in jail, so I wrote that". Skwirl posted:Not to defend a guy who almost certainly tortured people, but isn't there an interview where he had a basic outline for Heroes in Crisis and DC flat out told him "Make Wally West the murderer." Here's a more direct interview on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOm2Z5NYBoQ At about 1:07:00 the question about HiC comes up and he goes into it. He still defends it as a premise but says the original sin of the story is it really shouldn't have used Wally because of what he represented and how many people love the character. And goes on to say "If I could go back in time I would slap the person who told me to use Wally in the face" So I'm guessing if they used some other random Titan who has the power to accidentally kill a bunch of C-listers, Roy, and Ivy (I dunno, maybe instead of being one of the casualties Kid Devil blows up, or maybe Solstice if you want to do the lightning thing still) he thinks it'd have been fine. HiC has some other problems going on with it outside of just loving Wally so hard they had to spend 3 years cleaning him up, though. He also talks about why DC always kills and maims Titans. Which is what everyone has always assumed but, hey, confirmation is nice. Two Tone Shoes fucked around with this message at 01:04 on Jul 13, 2021 |

The only Paul Kupperberg Zatanna stories I can find are from 1982, a decade after other writers established Sloane/Zatanna were dating, and when Paul Dini was 24, not working in comics, and presumably didn't look like a late-40s Marc Maron. You are right. Jeff is a len wein self insert, paul takes over those duties, and dini just marries zatanna irl

I've been meaning to check out that guy's Howard the Duck run. We need more Howard the duck runs. In my quest crying out for help, I'm going to share my Superman early 2000s reading order. Like an intervention, y'know. I'm interested in that Joe Kelly run, a Deadpool guy and whatnot, plus Ed McGuiness the other Deadpool guy is also on Loeb's Superman books around that time. And just looked like a fun time for the book, but with lots and lots of stuff I may want to skip. Plus the books crossover a lot and it's really complicated in hindsight. And I myself want to skip some of it at least, events like the Emperor Joker thing that looked boring etc. So it's probably the most complex abridged reading order ever, and I'm posting it here as a testament to dozens of hours of time spent, lots of previews and blogs looked at etc, and just pure comic induced madness. I forget the details, I did this like a year ago, haven't read it yet. That's the comic way. [Action Comics 760-762, Superman Y2K, Superman 154, Adventures of 576, Man of Steel 98, Action Comics 763-766, Superman 158, Adventures of 580, Man of Steel 102, Action Comics 767, Superman 159, Action Comics 768, (skip Emperor Joker), Action Comics 772-773, Superman 164-165, Action Comics 774-775, (skip Return to Krypton), (skip Action 777-778), Action Comics 779, Our Worlds At War (skippa a bit), Superman 174, Adventures of 596, Action Comics 783, (skip Last Laugh), Action Comics 785, Superman 177, Action Comics 786, Superman 178, Superman 181, Action Comics 787-790, 792, Superman 184, Adventures of 606, Man of Steel 128, Action Comics 793, Superman 186, Adventures of 608, Man of Steel 130, Action Comics 795, Superman 187, Adventures of 609, Man of Steel 131, Action Comics 796-797, Superman 189, Adventures of 611, Man of Steel 133, Action Comics 798-810, Superman/Batman 1-6, Action Comics 812, Adventures of 625, Superman 202, Action Comics 813, Adventures of 626, Superman 203 (Godfall)] Similarly, I think I spent more time reading blogs, listening to podcasts, and seeing which X-Men comics I'd want to skip than I have reading X-Men comics. I'm still in the 80s on X-Men. I do have OCD, so that's a factor. Actually I'm around the 80s on Superman too, was gonna read that Alan Moore stuff and a couple fun looking Curt Swan issues like v1 298 and 299. But I'm a bit out of that research phase now, can be fun though. Aiming to read more this year. Is there a comic confessions topic? That seems like an insane amount of work for very little reward. Also, how have DC's YA novels been received so far, anyone know? From what I've seen of the advertising, I'm baffled as who the target audience of 'I am not Starfire' is actually meant to be.
