No other crop can produce so much oil - and this amount of oil is apparently needed to sustain the world population.

I don't believe that. The US has 300 million people but "consumes" what, a billion people's worth because (1) so very, very much of it is wasted, either by not being harvested because it's the wrong shape :qq: or being thrown out at supermarkets because of some nebulous "best before" date and (2) so many Americans are throwing multiple days worth of calories down their maws at every meal.

Put the entire US on a diet and there would be more than enough food for the world.

As another poster pointed out, the main consumers of palm oil are Asian.

Is this a "China produces way more fossil fuel emissions" situation* or is a straight comparison like that fair in the case of palm oil?

* I'm talking of course about how people like to scream that it shouldn't be up to western countries to reduce consumption because of this, not realizing willfully ignoring the fact that China's per capita emissions and total emissions since the industrial revolution are both way, way lower

I wasn't going for that awful whataboutism, rather I was pointing out a common misconception about an extremely complex crop that is socio-economically vital to several countries.

Like, Indonesia per capita consumes about 4x as much as the EU-27, but since it's grown there as a high yield low input crop so 🤷‍♀️

If you're in somewhere like Europe where you can get oil alternatives without the ecological impact or the food miles, then you should if you can afford it. But ultimately, palm oil is cheap and turning it into something evil is bad for the low-income communities that produce and consume it. Though, obviously, palm grown on illegally deforested land is bad all-round.

And the world should realise how vital these regions are environmentally on a global level and incentivise land management strategies in these areas that reduce the impact. But now I'm in fantasy land.

The amount of crop fats that go towards animal feed is a huge part of the issue, not saying everyone needs to go vegan or whatever, but certain economies definitely need to reduce their meat consumption.

Again, fantasy land lol

That is not to say that nothing can be done. But the solutions aren’t easy, and we need to be mindful of who would bear the costs of any solution (hint: it’s the people in the producing countries)

That's true that it is complex. For instance there's a push for sustainably producing palm oil. The current system is not only environmentally unsustainable but wildly unfair to the producers at best and involves slave labor at worst. To think about those people is just another layer of not supporting the broken system that puts profits above people.

My wife and I had a discussion about a year ago where we came to this same conclusion. We're not having kids, both for ethical reasons and because neither of us have ever even wanted children the tiniest bit and other than the possibility of family we're both basically just tiny cogs in a hideous giant inhuman machine. We do our best but neither of us are going to lose sleep over palm oil because... like... why? One of the chefs we watch on youtube had a whole video up about the palm oil problem a little while ago and it was informative but the actual impact either of us could have regarding any of the concerns is so minimal that it's probably healthier for us mentally to just shrug our shoulders and say 'yup, one more thing that sucks right now in this world'. As long as Earth and Society last for being generous another 80 years or so that's probably where we're going to stand on a lot things; do what we can but acknowledge that it won't amount to anything and will likely not change anything.

It depends, Sainsbury’s tend to be really consistent with dropping meat right down, Morrison’s will reduce 10p one day and then to next to nothing if they have a whole load of stuff to get rid off. Blocks of cheese for 20p, sausages for 60p and eggs for 11p.
Cheese freezes really well so I have a cheese section in the freezer. Northumberland cheese company also have big reduced boxes for next to nothing on occasion as well so check them out.

Yeah, things are already very bad for the laborers. And I think it is absolutely vital to not make the mistake of believing that making products that are ‘palm oil free’ is actually a solution, and not some self congratulatory wanking.
