It's just bad because wire nuts are meant to be installed inside a metal box in the wall where they never move. If they're in the middle of a cord like that, there's a chance that they'll catch on something or work themselves loose with movement and then you will have problems.

This. I have a heavy duty fan I only use to dry our basement floor after it floors (less these days!) where I spliced a new plug on from an old extension cord. It gets used like twice a year now and I always check the wire nuts before turning it on. Overall C- bad solution.

Does the current even go through the nuts themselves? I thought they just press the conductors together

There's a little aluminum cap inside the wire nut, so yes.

Sometimes it's copper. Brand dependent.

If you absolutely have to fix an extension cord, spend a few bucks and do it Right/Safely/OSHA. It's typically easier that the effort folks put into doing it a different way.

Not even worth it i guarantee you the extension cord was like five bucks at Walmart. It’s a small gauge that you buy for cheap when you don’t know what you’re actually doing.

I want to believe those two screws are just to assemble the plug after internally wiring it all up safely.

You are completely correct. You unscrew those and there's proper terminals to connect each bare wire inside.

The bearings in one of the wheel hubs seized and one of the front wheels won't spin. They needed to get to the store to get groceries. The dollies won't last for long, but they should steer just fine.

The wheels would still turn and even if the dolly wheels can spin freely they're still going to generally go in the direction of power.

Could it be a super lovely tow setup? Get the drive wheels off the gound and haul it , then push it into the space.

I've seen enough poor decisions with tow straps that a potential image is pretty clear in my head.

edit: probably not, just saw it off a phone, thought it was a condo parking lot or something. Probably not doing that ot get a car to the grocery store.

It also almost certainly isn't rated for the wattage of a microwave. You need an cord made from 12awg or 10awg wire for that sort of thing, but those are expensive so the $5 fire hazard from Walmart gets used instead!

Depends how long it is. The wires in the wall are only 14 or 12.

Agreed though that most orange cords are 16 gauge and can't carry that much current at any length.

These are piss easy to use, and I highly recommend them. Not surprising, it mostly gets used for extension cords because careless assholes just whip that poo poo around.

My dad has killed a few cords by trimming bushes and being careless about having his finger on the trigger and not paying attention to where the cord is. He used to be Mr. Safety, but stopped giving a poo poo once he retired. He once threw away an extension cord because the ground pin broke off. The only things ever plugged into it were a trimmer and leaf blower and neither had ground pins.

What would you recommend for max current on a 16 gauge cord? I'm looking at various recommendations and they all say 12-13 amps at 25 feet is okay, with most of them saying 50 feet is okay too.
