Don't get it twisted who your enemies are.
I remember hearing several stories on the Giant Bombcast about how incredibly distrustful Square Enix was of the internet for basically the entirety of the 2000s, and how completely draconian they, as well as Nintendo, always were when doing press stuff for internet outlets vs magazines and TV.

Those policies come off as downright radically progressive compared to this bullshit.

"Ah," Ratz had said, at last, "the artiste."
I know the pacing in every Yakuza gets hosed by whether or not you spend 20 hours loving around between plot points but even ignoring substories and minigames Y4 has some absolutely insane pacing. Playing as Tanimura:

Chapter 1: lengthy introduction, multiple conversations around the city and a dramatic dock chase and fight sequence

Chapter 2: more political intrigue resulting in a series of revelations that results in a drawn-out chase sequence through the streets and rooftops, beating dozens of thugs down with a briefcase filled with 100 billion yen

Chapter 3: two extremely brief conversations with the police chief totalling less than five minutes. Chapter over!

Apparently Majima has been waiting on the Millennium Tower rooftop for several months now* and the police are absolutely loving determined to stand on the street in case that escaped criminal gets spotted.... all while Saejima is loving about with a fat kid helping him win a fighting tournament. It rules!

I can't imagine recasting the next game in the series with a new main character would be an insurmountable obstacle. It's not like the Yakuza series hasn't had multiple characters and it did just fine.

While totally possible, every instance of characters being recast wasn't done mid-series before. It's either before the release or for the rerelease.
It loving sucks and I hope they find a way around it too, because the cast is too great.

the weeks-long coverage the entertainment press and shows gave to Johnny Kitagawa here when he finally died (rest in piss) was pretty disgusting, but that's also exactly what happens when all of those TV channels/entertainment groups have partial ownership stakes in Johnny's Entertainment.

yep, that's why he was such a huge get for the series. It's the main character, and it's that guy. Beat Takeshi wasn't the protagonist, and other actors who have appeared have been on "oh, they're in this" sort of status. Kimura Takuya being front and center meant a lot.

I'm also pretty sure Johnny's has/had a ban on photos of their performers appearing online? I know they had a ridiculous lockdown on that for a while. That's the kind of company we're talking about here.

It kind of is weird that smoking would be held up as defamatory in Japan. Last time I went (which was years ago, I guess) there was so much cigarette smoke in the air. It was something I hadn't had to deal with in a long time, very weird experience.

Still sucks that he sexually exploited kids though. Dude sounds like a shithead to me.

gently caress no, we need Keith David on constant standby in case the Yakuza PS2 guy doesn’t wanna voice Kiryu anymore.

(he really would be a great Kiryu, joking aside)

Just finished Yakuza 3. Combat felt like a slog compared to 0 or the Kiwamis. Story still had its nice moments. Not really substorying much since primarily I just want to catch up the series before sinking a ton of time into 7.

The substories in 3 are a blast! If you've completed the game, you could probably knock off most if not all of them in Premium Adventure mode relatively quickly.

I say this when I refuse to continue the main game for any Yakuza until I have knocked off every possible substory I can find.... :sweatdrop:

I feel like the substories in Y3 are best done sprinkled throughout the main plot or they'll mostly feel a little samey, even the good ones. I mean this is true of every Yakuza game but its extremely true of Y3.

In related news I'm still replaying Y4 and finally almost done with Tanimura's section and just did his long, multi-part substory involving his father's investigation for the first time and had to laugh when the big revelation is that instead of his father being killed by a crime syndicate to cover up a conspiracy when he was a child it turns out his father's partner, who was also killed by a different crime syndicate to cover up a different conspiracy, was his real father :effort:. Even Tanimura's shocking secret backstory is boring as poo poo! This guy sucks so bad!

THUNDERDOME LOSER

Just startin' my first Yakuza experience with 7. Don't generally have a lot of time for games these days but I'm diggin' it, especially 'cause it's been more custscenes than button-presses.

The silliness is just starting to blossom, I think I'm early in Chapter 4. I haven't noticed a whole lot of substories / side stories, but I also haven't really been exploring 'cause the only thing I know about on the map are food / casino shops. Given that I feel like the game is still opening up, I haven't wandered too much at random.

Am I missing much content by mostly following the arrows? Or will it tell me at some point that by the way there're sidequests just randomly out there?

I just finished the story in Yakuza LAD last night. Oh man the feels..... :smith:

Felt bad for the young master even if he was a huge douchebag throughout the game, and Kume is a huge bastard for stabbing him like that.

Got any advice for Premium Adventure? Seems like I need to wrap up any sidequests and grind everyone and their jobs to max level to take on the True Millennium Tower then.
